is playing on ESPN right now. He is really good. There is no way he is going to BYU. This is depressing.

We'll have to see what happens but I think in this case, the tall and spacious building prevails.

Why are you ruling him out so quickly?

He is the 2013 "must get." ESPN has him at #6 in that class. Rose has been all over this kid since the 7th or 8th grade. They'll be all over him the next two years too. He would be a huge get.

I disagree; he's way ahead of his age skillswise, but he's not particularly tall and not particularly athletic... just very very skilled. Unless he grows 3-4 inches in the next two years, I'd bet $1000 that Parker plays at least until he's a junior and $10,000 that he's not one and done. He just isn't that type of athlete.



That being said he's a very skilled and smart basketball player and will be an assett to whatever program gets him from minute 1 on campus. But I don't think it'll be us, his dad is shopping (not Cecil Newton shopping) him too hard to the Pitinos, Selfs, and Caliparis of the world.



I simply get the impression that the Parker family thinks that there won't be enough quality competition to warrant being a WCC player when he's a big name right where he is. I don't doubt that Dave Rose will put on the full court press, but I think this kid is a Manti Teo waiting to happen, minus the 12 pack of beer.

I suppose I have a hard time with the "we're not good enough" argument. We play in one of the largest basketball stadiums in the country and we can fill it. Out of 270 something basketball teams BYU is one of the top 25 teams in the country? WE're top ten in both offense and defense, and we have the premier all-american point guard in the country?



And that's not compelling enough?

I dont' disagree that we bring something to the table. But when you're in the Big 10s backyard and in a city that doesn't typically send kids out west; I don't think the highest profile player in that city (he's not the best, just the highest profile) will give BYU much consideration.



There's nothing that BYU offers that he can't get with Ohio State, Illinois, Louisville or Kentucky, (and the attitude would be that all of those schools offer him more exposure) unless he really does want the LDS BYU experience. Neither Sonny Parker nor Jabari make a single mention to their LDS faith on their facebook page, though Jabari does have LDS friends and some BYU players in his friends list. Jabari also has pictures with Pitino, Bruce Weber, etc.



I would feel differently if Jabari played out west and knew how good Nick Emery and TJ Haws were going to be.



Remember, I worked for a D1 program for 3 years in recruiting; and I had a major hand in bringing in the leading scorer in UMKC history (Michael Watson). I've seen 1st hand how coaches and dads in particular shop their kids; for the most part I can pick out the guys that want the brightest lights possible. I hope that Sonny Parker gives BYU a fair shake but again, nothing but the LDS BYU experience is exclusive to the Y, because Jabari will have his pick of any school he wants.





He also doesn't even have BYU on this list. (though I hate scout's basketball coverage immensely)

For Simeon Academy in Illinois, the last decade was all about Derrick Rose. Rose was a star point guard for the school and went on to play college ball at Memphis for a year and ultimately became the top draft pick. Now a star for the Chicago Bulls, Rose is doing his own thing, while a new star at Simeon has emerged.



Jabari Parker, a big 6-foot-7 sophomore forward, has become one of the top players in the Chicago area. Leading his top fifteen squad to new heights on the court, coaches are taking notice of Parker’s success.



At the moment, Jabari has a top five of Washington, Illinois, Michigan State, Duke and Kansas. Last night, one of the schools pulled the trigger and offered the 2013 star. “I was on the phone with Coach K from Duke yesterday,” said Sonny Parker, the father of Jabari. “They officially offered Jabari a scholarship.”



The Parker family was excited about the offer and really likes the Duke program. “Duke is similar to Simeon’s program,” Sonny stated. “The tradition, history and discipline is there. I watched that special on ESPNU about Duke and I got a better understanding about their program.”

Sounds like BYU won't get a sniff of this kid.

If he comes out to a BYU camp, then we've got a chance. If not, nope. That was basically how Jimmer got in the fold.

I'm not saying that there's no hope, but the Parkers would have to want to make a statement about their faith by going out west to BYU because if it's stricly about basketball, he can get as good an experience at other schools that are offering him.



If he wants good hoops AND the LDS BYU experience, then he could be the man in Provo and on the west coast. I'm not holding my breath but I'm certainly not without hope.



I definately benefits us that we're going to be on ESPN a ton for the next 2 years and that Nick Emery and TJ Haws are going to be studs too.

I really hope the tall and spacious building does not prevail, but after watching this game there is a slim to none chance we get him. BYU's recruiting is mainly done from the Rocky Mountains to the west coast (with Jimmer, Noah and DeMarcus being anomalies of course). If Jabari keeps growing, the inside presence is something BYU could ill afford not to have.

His father is not a member, but his mother (tongan) is and so is his older brother who has a huge influence on him. BYU screwed up by not recruiting his brother Chris. Chris was a decent point guard in high school, came back from serving a mission and tried to get BYU to recruit him, Jabari told me that he didn't like how BYU dogged his brother, so they're probably out of the mix, but you never know. Not super athletic, but the kid can ball.

That explains a lot about Sonny. I follow him on facebook and never got the impression that he was in love with BYU. Does Chris have more pull than dad when it comes to his choice of schools? I guess we'll find out if Jabari gives BYU a chance. I do know that Sonny has NBA connections; his buddy at UW played with him at Golden State, etc. etc. In the end , I don't think Sonny has much connection to BYU.



Where is Chris Parker now? And once you answer that question, then realize it wasn't BYU that dogged him but all top 50 schools. Jimmer Fredette has an older brother that played JUCO ball too.....



(For those interested, Chris Parker tried out for the BYU-H team and didn't make the cut... that's hardly embarassing, we saw ourselves that BYU-H is a small college powerhouse and has great guards that could play D1... and lot of current D1 guards would not play for BYU-H this year, including Nick Martineau currently on scholarship with us)



Dave Rose has a top 20 program with national recruits; he can't offer everyone with an future star of a brother, unless they're also a star.



With only 13 scholarships, good coaches can't afford to be wrong; those that are wrong are the Utahs of the world that lose as many players as they gain every year (Rick Majerus very rarely missed on recruits which is why Utah used to be nationally relevant.... he also very rarely missed a meal). Heck even Billy Donovan has been wrong on recruits for several years since winning back to back national championships.



I think we'd all love to see Jabari embrace BYU; and I would believe that Chris would have just as good an experience as TJ Fredette has had watching his brother star in Cougar blue. Chris can still have the BYU experience without playing for the team.

Yes, Chris' brother is playing in Idaho. When I said BYU dogged Chris, I meant that they showed very little respect for him. I lived in Chicago when all of this went down. Sonny does not want Jabari to go to BYU, but his mom really does. Sonny is a basketball legend in Chi-town, Jabari has been playin with guys like Derek Rose for the last 5 years, he'll be a very good college player, our only hope was to get his brother on board and then see if Jabari followed him like Kyle Collinsworth did with his brother Chris. I'm not saying BYU can or should offer every potential future star's brother a scholarship in hopes to attract the younger brother, but in this case, it would have been a very good idea. Trust me, Jabari would have followed his brother to BYU, I have no doubt about that. As it stands now, he's going else where. By the way, I've hooped with both Martineau and Chris Parker, Parker's a tougher match up.

A perfect example is top 50 recruit and commit DeMarcus Harrison. His brother, DJ, was a very good point with some D1 looks; Dave and company didn't offer and they still got DeMarcus. DJ intends on walking on after his mission.

The difference here is Sonny and we all believe that Sonny wants the limelight for Jabari (thus far he's delivered)...



I have watched Jabari play and I can say for assurity that he's not ever going to be a 1st team all america or top notch pro. He doesn't have the height to do it at the 4-5 at the pro level and he doesn't have the quicks to do it at the 2-3. He'll be a very very good college player because he's incredibly skilled and his hoops IQ is off the charts, but he's likely not a sure fire lottery pick... he'll never be tall enough or athletic enough... but again, whatever college program gets him will be very very lucky for 3-4 years because he's got enough intangibles to be a great college player.



I don't doubt that Chris Parker > Nick martineau, and I doubt you'd find many on this forum that would disagree either... but Dave has shown that with Zylstra, Magnnusson, Anderson and now Martineau that if you work hard in practice and in the class room that he'll take care of you (and if you don't , he'll kick you to the curb, ala Michael Loyd Jr.)

Just sayin' I've played against both, Martineau and C Parker and Parker is a better athlete and as good of a ball handler. Not quite the shooter, but all in all if you can offer Martineau surely you can find a spot for Parker. Parker is just a good kid, still urging his brother to go to BYU and still hoping to hop on the team at some point. Maybe it's not too late.
