Cuban wants to "buy the bcs"

Mark Cuban was on the Dan Patrick show this morning. Among other things he talked about how money drives everything. He was talking about how he was considering buying a MLB team and then had an epiphany and buying sports in general. He hates the bcs. He believes that for 1/2 billion bucks he can buy the momentum to ensure a college football playoff. He has a history of dreaming big and succeeding.



Interestingly his system would still have bowls. As a team loses in the playoffs it earns it's way into a final bowl game determined by final playoff position, not regular season conference affiliation.

I hope he does it. I liked his idea of getting a coalition of big time donors and making a pledge to stop donating money to universities unless they agree to a playoff.

Proponents of the BCS always bring up how losing the tradition of the bowls would be a tragedy. Who ever said you can't have both? Have an 8 or 16 team playoff and all the other teams with at least 6 or 7 wins go to a bowl game. Problem solved.

I can see it now... An undefeated USC or BYU gets tripped up during the playoffs or loses because of a bad call and doesn't get sent to the title game. Instead, a Navy team with 5 losses has just the right mismatches to beat everyone in their playoff tree and an 8-5 Navy team takes on a 12-0 Georgia (because Cam Newton was sent to jail and Auburn got the NCAA bomb) and gets destroyed in the 1 v 2 NC bowl game. Everyone knows it should have been BYU or USC in that final game and they clamor for something else. Cause now THAT systems isn't fair either. "The BCS would never have allowed that to happen..."



I"m not sure ending with bowl games is such a good idea. Especially when 80-90% of all schools lose money by going to bowl games.

it's easy. The school with the higher playoff seed gets the home game. Guaranteed to fill your stadium every time, no travel costs and good revenue.

He stole that idea from me! I've been saying all along that you can have both. The first 8 out are now eligible to go to whatever bowl they normally would go to. The next four losers go to two of the BCS bowls, the next two to lose go to the third place BCS bowl game and the last two standing play in the NC bcs bowl game. As for those who do not get a spot in the sweet 16 (11 champs 5 at large) - they go to whatever bowl they normally would go to.

This is exactly what we need (well, maybe not Cuban): someone with money who has the vision. Whoever spearheads the playoff stands to make TRUCKLOADS of money. It still surprises me that ESPN hasn't gotten behind it more, since they would stand to gain a ton of tv ratings money from a new playoff system. Anyway, please, Please, PLEASE let this happen. It keeps government fingers out of the college football system and sets up the playoff that we desperately need.

If Cuban can pull it off, great.



I remember back when the BCS was just getting started, another conglomerate actually made a proposal to host a playoff for college football and they were willing to pay alot more than the bowls were bringing in. They shot it down then and the BCS prez will shoot it down again. And that plan preserved the bowls as well.



One day it will happen, but will it be in my life time?

Dear Mr. Cuban, the BCS is not for sale. It was bought and paid for a long time ago....

Why not make the bowl games the play off games.



if you take the top 8 teams to the playoffs, why not have those first 4 games be played in the Holiday bowl, Cotton bowl, Fiesta Bowl and Sugar bowl.



Then have the next 2 games be at the Rose Bowl and the Sugar Bowl?



While this is happening the rest of the bowl eligible teams can play in the less meaningful bowls such as the "Beaf O Brady's Bowl" and the "Tampax Up Your's Bowl"



the last game would be the National Championship game like we have now. Just a thought...

Only 500 mill? This is how much 'rainy day fund' Utah government had before the recession began.



So instead of wasting that money on propping up education, roads, and other boring stuff, the state of Utah could have been buying the BCS? I want my money back!
