I was at that game, and have watched it several times since. Like a great movie, this game never grows stale. I had a couple of observations this time around:



1) without a great tight end, BYU would have probably lost by 4 TDs.

2) BYU receivers just did not drop passes (a BYU trademark)

3) McMahon was good, but Jake Heaps has a better arm, is more accurate, and has more upside than McMahon (Heaps is not blind in one eye)

4) without the blocked punt with 13 seconds left in the game, BYU would not have won the game

5) Braga (receiver) was the star of the game in my opinion. He caught every pass thrown to him, and every reception was a difficult reception, and he usually got drilled, but hung on to every pass.

6) no game is over until it's over. The announcers, the SMU coaches, the SMU players, the SMU fans, the BYU fans, all believed SMU would win the game.

Greater accuracy than McMahon? That's yet to be proven.

Better arm? I'm not sure. McMahon threw that final pass from his own 47 and it went 7 yards deep. That's 60 yards in the air and Jimmy Mac didn't even really step into that throw.

Upside? Maybe.



But Jim McMahon was the best college football QB ever, he did things that had never been done previously.

I'm not quite ready to say the same of Jake. Although I think Jake can be a top 3 QB at BYU by the time he's done.



In fact, Jake's got a very good chance to hold every quarterback record at BYU (wins, touchdowns, yards, completions, attempts, rating, etc.)

Looks like it just came on ESPN-Classic too. Cool! I would love to be back in the Holiday Bowl for a bunch of years. Huge payout and no sharing the money.

I admit the Miracle Bowl was before my time. By like a couple months. I watched the re-run last night. This was the first game I've watched McMahon play a full game.



One thing I was impressed with -- was his play action. The way he moved and hid the ball, while faking the hand off was a work of art. Mastered. Perfected.



We need Jake Heaps to watch and learn on this aspect of the game.

I wonder how may times I turned that game off, only to go back and check later, just to get frustrated and turn it off again. I'm just glad I stuck it out through the last 5 minutes. I wouldn't have forgiven myself if I had missed it.

I was at the game with my stake president. He wanted to leave early but I wouldn't let him. I had seen how fast they could score (I was at the Y). Afterwards I told him that he had to let me serve a mission.
