Interesting - here's what a top Offensive Coord costs - in today's market. $1.3 mill per year Wow!!!

So - think BYU will replace Robert Anae?? Hmmmm .......

"Vanderbilt made an aggressive push for Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn, but Malzahn has decided to stay at Auburn, receiving a raise and a contract extension that will make him the highest-paid assistant coach in the SEC and one of the highest in the country, a source said Monday.

Malzahn was making $500,000 under his old contract and will more than double that with a new multiyear deal, which will pay him in the range of $1.3 million per year, the source said."

I wish BYU would fork out the dough and go get a been there and done that undefeated Heisman thing - but the BYU model is to give someone unproven a try and hope it works out like they did when they promoted Bronco, hired Anae, Bosco, Doman, and just about every other hire. Sometimes it works out just great, sometimes OK but not great, and sometimes disastrous. Probably about a normal curve distribution.

This guy makes more as an OC than Bronco makes as HC and has teams fighting for his services.

When one of BYU's unproven guys does work out you have to hope they like Provo because the offers will come pouring in after a little success at going undefeated or developing a Heisman winner. Think Mike Holmgren, Ted Tollner, etc. Back in the day - Doug Scoville. Now before someone jumps me - I don't know what BYU paid them or what they got when they left, I just know they left back in the heyday.

I don't mind being a program with a high coach turnover rate. It proves you are making noise on a national level and people are paying attention.

Look at Utah, and all of the coach turnover they have had. As much as I hate to say it, they have a system in place that cranks out good coaches, and each coach passes on what the last one taught to him to his underlings (that is why they need BYU grads, the Ute ones can't manage the thinking involved ;) ). BYU has no such system, but is starting to do it w Bronco. Problem is, he took his foot of the gas, and the car nearly sputtered and swerved off the road.

No offense to the OP, but what is the going rate for a top Head Coach? Are we paying that? It is not all about money when it comes to finding the right guy at BYU, it never has. Guys have time and time again given up more money to coach at BYU. Plus, I don't think Anae is done at BYU. He will be the OC next year.

While possible, this is likely incorrect based on things I've heard over the last few days.

From what i understand, BYU does not release salary information so we don't know how much they pay them. So the arguement to say we don't get or keep good coaches because of salary has a large hole it. I know one coach personally that left not because of $ but for a move up in the coaching heirarchy hoping to someday become the HC.

Money spent on coaching is not a linear relationship. Yes, you do need to pay your coaches well. But there is not a direct correlation to salaries and success. And by direct correlation I mean, the more you pay, the more you win, so paying even more would lead to even more winning.

Guys who come to BYU do it becuase they wan the job here. The $$ is always part of an eqaution, but not the whole part. Fact is, getting $180-200k to coach at BYU is a sweet gig. The model for BYU will never be SEC pay scales. Ever. So what if Malzahn turned down Vandy. KWhit turned down Tennessee and got a raise at Utah as well. Obviously, not all SEC jobs are good ones, just because they pay more, are they.

I would suspect that BYU have the resources to be more competitive in the coaching market now, with that new TV deal. I suspect all coahes will get a nice bump in pay. But they will still not be BCS level. BYU does not pay that, nor will they ever, for any position at the university.

Money is as much a non-issue as it can possibly be at any coaching spot in the country. It just is. Most of the coaches making the big time bucks would never come to BYU because they would be held to a higher standard than they are elsewhere. Yes, that means they couldn't cheat, and they'd have to deal with missions. We have to pay our coaches reasonably, but anyone we are seriously looking at will be willing to come in and win at the prices we're paying.

Ain't that the truth... :~(

Also, Malzahn was offered the Vanderbilt job. I'm not sure I'd walk away from any secure job to be the head coach at Vandy. Vandy (or Duke) may be the least attractive BCS coaching job in the country. They don't even have an athletic department for crying out loud.

I wonder who makes the final call on salaries for coaches at BYU?

If the booster club had a super rich sponsor with a multi million dollar endowment, could it pay top dollar for whoever it thought would be the best fit? Or does the BoT limit the salary to something below $1 million to remain "non-pretentious"?

My personal thoughts are that Bronco is pulling close to $1 million a year.

From what I hear, Bronco is in that range now as well. Some paid by the university, some from camps, some from apparel contracts.

I know Saban at Alabama is paid entirely by private money, so the Alabama BoT never had to agree to the deal because state or university funds were not used. That's right--over $5M per all fom private donors. Of course, I have a feeling that teh BYU BoT would need to approve any deal for a BYU HC regardless of wher ethe $$ came from.

Well, my dream has always been to become independently wealthy so I can fly the team around on my own 737 and get my own booth in the Presidents Loge.

Oh well.

There is already a Coaches Corner section of the Legacy Club that is paying Rose's and Bronco's salary.

I've heard rumors over the past 2 years that Bronco is making - more or less - what the Off. Coord. is making @ Auburn. Who knows because it's never published. But - there are always insiders that do know. If I lived in Provo & made $1.3 mill. p/ year - I'd be comfortable. LOL!!!!!

So who are possible OC out there that BYU could/should hire? I am still so peeved about Anae's play calling in the 4th quarter against Utah, I could spit. It's ridiculous that BYU lost that game, and we lost it because Anae offered up the worst play calls in history. Dock his pay for next year, then see if he still wants to stay, if not, I'd wish him well and be happy he's gone.

And if he did leave, you'd be happy and still wondering who is going to be OC. Could turn into a desperate hire and a terrible mistake in the long run.

I think the risk is relatively low. We already know Anae's abilities and his cieiling (he'll never do better than 2-loss seasons because his teams will never compete against top defenses) and we know his floor (2005 and 2010), so I say let's cut him and see what we can do with a more flexible innovator.
