SDSU is More Than Beatable

Tonight basically made if official. SDSU = paper tiger.



They will be a challenge... and no, BYU shouldn't take the game lightly. But these guys have struggled NUMEROUS times against weak teams - sometimes just the first half of the game, and other times throughout the whole game. And who is their biggest win?



If we play even just an above average game, I think we'll win comfortably home AND away against the Asstecs this year. I'm sorry, they don't impress me. And their shooting continues to be abysmal.

i saw them beat St Mary's and their outside shot was falling. That has been how we have beaten them in the past. Throw up the zone and make them hit the outside shot.

Cal Poly is amazing...NOT

Maybe we'll win easily if two of their starters are out due to illness and they shoot 0-18 from three.



Both games against SDSU will be tough.

Is "more than beatable" kinda like "more than famous"?

We were missing two of our best as well - Hartsock and Collinsworth. And it's not like we're loaded with big's either. Yet we managed to beat a good team by 22... while SDSU (again) squeaked by a much lesser opponent.



Of course they'll be a tough opponent. But mark my words again - if BYU plays an average to above average game against them, we win comfortably.

I have no doubts that we can beat them, especially after watching the Arizona game. Before Sat. Arizona was number 10 in the country in FG% shooting above 50%. We held them to something like 33%. Our zone defense was absolutely stifling. Arizona hardly got an open look at the basket and when they tried to go inside we were there to meet them. I think people are really underestimating how good our defense is. We don't have a single powder-puff on D this season.



When we were shooting 218th in the country at 42% we still won games and that was solely because of our defense and our rebounding.



We'll arrive in SDSU with something to prove and a chip on our shoulders as opposed to SDSU. They've been heralded as the "best" team in the MWC for the last year. We'll prove them wrong.

To be fair, Kwahi Leonard and Chase Tapley didn't play for SDSU. So don't read too much into this game. BYU would struggle if Jimmer and say, Noah Hartsock missed a game too.

I think it can be a measure of strength when teams can win when they play badly. This happened for BYU against SF and Utah State. They found a way to win. The same can be said for SDSU. Beatable - yes. Easily - no.

How has SDSU owned us in the past? Offensive boards. As long as we have the right lineups out there they don't have a chance of dominating the glass against us. I actually am not too worried about SDSU--nothing has changed with their shooting so we can probably assume the zone will still work on them. I believe that UNLV and UNM are a bigger threat to us yet again this season.

BYU vs SDSU the last three years:

2009-2010: BYU 2 SDSU 0

2008-2009: BYU 2 SDSU 1

2007-2008: BYU 2 SDSU 1

Total: BYU 6 SDSU 2



If there is any owning going on, it's by BYU.

Well I didn't mean "owned" as in beating us but rather merely one aspect of the game. I'm well aware of our dominance against them in W vs L's. The only reason they compete closely with us is due to rebounding, an advantage they won't have this year.

We also have the advantage over them in the "does Jimmer Fredette play for your team?" category.

Surprisingly, the Aztecs don't enjoy that much of a rebounding advantage over us, and I feel like we're a much better rebounding team than we've been the last few years. So if SDSU really hasn't had much of a rebounding edge and we're a better rebounding team then that's a good sign for this year.

Clearly they crash the boards better when not in Provo. 17 is a big number! Luckily they still can't shoot--again I am not worried about these guys. UNM and UNLV are a tougher matchup for us as usual.

All I can say is they need to beat us more than we need to beat them.
