Trib article in the box over on the right - BYU Football: Confidence in Heaps Soars after Utah game - talked about Heaps improvement during the season and had this quote:

“Well, I mean, it doesn’t really get any more hostile than that,” he said of his Utah-game experience. “There’s not a lot more pressure I could face other than in a rivalry game against Utah. I am not saying that I have experienced everything and nothing new is going to come my way, but at this point I feel confident that I am prepared for the harshest situations, and our coaching staff has done a real good job of preparing me and getting me better.”

Another article over there about Doman talks about him being happy in Provo, enjoying being QB Coach - but having career ambitions. He said he is not sure when those career advancement opportunities will come, but he is sure they will come.

Meanwhile, he has the rare opportunity to continue to develop Heaps, having developed Beck and Hall, while the nation watches. If he does turn Heaps into an NFL player of epic (Young or McMahon) proportions - he will become the New Norm Chow - especially if he figures out a smoother transition to replace Heaps in two or three years than BYU did to replace Hall.

I am worried about 2011 recruiting class - we need top 30 every year to build up our stockpile of talent. What will our class be ranked this year? Who is accountable if it is not ranked high? Are we better off with less heralded, but hungrier recruits?

And, is Heaps really happy about how he has been developed? I take him at face value. Hopefully we beat UTEP, get Heaps ready for 2011, and get #2 and #3 QBs ready to step in if that brutal early schedule takes Jake down with injury.

Bib, every top program in the nation has next years' class almost all full up. That is how all the big boys do it. That we are getting these guys early, that is a great thing. Don't forget about all our highly touted recruits we landed this year that will make a huge impact into next year (Heaps, Apo, Phillips, TFab, Van Noy, Kori Gaines, Joe Sampson, Uona Kaveinga and about a hundred others). Also, the fact that a bigger majority of our recruits don't have imminent mission plans... (non-members, etc).

Add that to the fact that we are bringing back basically everyone but the DB's next year, and that shouldn't even have a drop off in talent (besides Rich) and we are in a very very good place.

we are fine. A lot of our 3 star guys will end up being 4 and 5 star players, and even some of the 2 star guys will have a big impact (Kuresa and others).

This year's class will not be highly rated for the simple fact that BYU only has about 15 scholorships to give out this year due to returning missionaries. You need a full class of 25 for it to get highly rated. Recruiting services are weighted toward volume, not average star rating. Bronco has been good at picking talent so I am not worried about the type of guys that will be coming in.

My worry is not about the 2010 class - it is about keeping the pipeline full. And I know we filled most of this class early like others do. And I know we might have 1 or 2 surprise defections or gains at the last minute like everyone does.

But, when I look at our list, O see mostly ** and if we do expect whatever coaches we have over the next three years to produce an undefeated season and a Heisman winner we will need added depth because injuries will come and especially with our schedule.

Players get homesick, violate honor code, unexpectedly go on missions, disappoint, get injured, etc. Stuff happens and teams that play in BCS Bowls regularly have the depth to reload instead of rebuild when too much stuff happens at once.

I have not studied these guys carefully enough to know who is going to overachiever the ** or *** on the list above - but it will not ve viewed outside our bubble as a big-time class even on average. This may start to show by 2013 especially if we are repeating the same story next year.

PS - who in this class do we think will step up to **** or ***** level of performance and be so good that we will be clamoring for experienced players to move aside so we can get the new guy on the field as a True Freshman like we did last year for Heaps, Van Noy, Apo, Stout, Philips, etc.

The problem may be that Heaps is restricted from recruiting now that he is enrolled. What is the rule on player recruiting contact with potential recruits?

A few years ago we would have bee ecstatic about this year's class. Its chalk full of three star recruits. We used to get excited about three star recruits. Last year we were spoiled with some 5 and 4 star recruits. I am also not concerned with this class' ranking for the reasons mentioned above as well as that I think the guys we have gotten are very talented. We have some great players coming in.

I'll have to agree with Bronco when it comes to class rankings. The stars next to their name are important to recruiting agencies and fans bragging to their rivals but they mean nothing to what a player will do on Saturday on the field. Dennis pitta was a no star recruit (walked on, was not really recruited by any d1 school). Rich was a walk on, Colby clawson was a walk on. I could go on and on.

I don't believe current players can contact potential recruits. They can during on-campus visits but that's about it.

This class is solid. Anyone stating otherwise is missing big picture. We need more depth on both lines, and this class accomplishes that goal, alog with help in the secodary. I get that some people only are able to post about anything negative when it comes to BYU, but those types are clueless. To get a big picture of this class, add the incoming RMs to it, especially those that have yet to wear BYU blue in a game, then lets's evaluate. Here is a sampling:

Adam Hine 4* RB

Iona Pritchard 3* LB

Cameron Comer 3* DB

Add to it that Uona Kaveinga gets to play next year, and we may have another USC transfer coming in, and our depth improves, our skill improves, our speed improves, and we take a step in the right direction.

lol.

to further expand:

Ryker Matthews (3*) will be solid in a few years. He will play like a 4-5* when all is said and done.

Alex Kuresa 2* - should contribute nicely and w/ mission plans fit in perfectly. Comes back after Jakes junior year.

Joe Sampson (JC transfer) - should start at safety next year. Huge get for us.

Baker Pritchard at 3* is a stud.

Austin Heder will be a stud at LB, and add depth for the next year or two.

We just offered Josh Weeks, and if he comes, then we will have one of the best 1,2,3 tandems in the West with Apo/Hoffman/Weeks/Jacobsen

I totaly agree that this is a decent class compared to the classes we used to get that got us to some nice 10+ win seasons 4 years in a row followed by a painful rebuilding year. My comment is in the context that many fans, not me, get hateful because we didn't win them all every year. 11-2 and 11-2 and 10-3 and 11-2 was a hugh disappoinment to many posters on this board who believe that Robert Anae single handedly held us back from greater glory. I am just trying to interject a little bit of reality of what the big time programs that are frequently in the NC hunt do. They go hire proven coaches. And they load up on 5***** recruits and 4**** recruits - several of each - every single year. They don't get spoiled by the riches once and then go back to making excuses for not repeating it annually. They do it every year. And even then it does not always work.

I understand the reality of being BYU. We are not going to get those riches every year - apparently. I understand that with only 15 slots you don't get as many ***** as if yu have 25 slots - but wouldn't you think it would be the *** or ** guys that we had to tell we just don't have a schollie - not the ***** guys. The bottom line - face it - USC, ND, UF, Bama, and 20 or so other schools loaded up on those guys like happens every single year. My boss is a USC alum. Tough year for him. Not as tough as BYU had, but tough. And USC has lost scholarships for a while and they are on probabtion and they get no Bowl game this year or next and guess what - they have landed several 4**** and several 5**** recruits already. They may have had to pay them for all I know - but that is who is getting them. (I did not double check my bosses claims - let me know if he lied - buthe siad they go tthe no 4 and no 6 QB for example - not ** Jake Kuresa that some posters, not me, on CC already want to convert to a DB or slot).

I am OK with the status Quo. I am OK with recruiting guys and having them be hungry and prove it on the field. I support Bronco on that. And that should get us some nice seasons. but the DEFINITION of INSANITY is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different reesult - Just Sayin - but if some people on here expect a different result - especially those that won't be satisfied with just doing what Utah, TCU, and BSU did, but expect to win the NC before they will be happy - Well recruiting *** that you hope will play like ***** probably won't cut it no matter how many coaches you fire.

And to address the point of the RMs - and players we got in the last class that had to sit out a year - well if we counted them last year what do you want to do count them three times. We get soph transfer Pete Pete in 2011 from Florida - we count it. He sits out a year so we count him again in 2012. He converts and serves a mission and we count him again in 2014. That is double and triple dipping folks. We can't go around touting how we outrecruit everyone if we don't do it every year.

But the **** playing like ***** model can basically be described as the BYU, BSU, U of U, and TCU model. I am not saying our class is far worse - haven't even looked at theis. It is not the USC, Florida, and Texas model.

I thought we all were chasing a NC and a Heisman tropy. Let's get Heaps some help.

I totally agree - this small class is solid. Let me add - not great. Not spectacular. Not NC caliber. But decent. Solid. Absolutley. I never said otherwise. It will not be me asasinating these guys for being to white, too small, too slow, unathletic, too in the way of the next wave of unproven talent. It will not be me. Someon will be. it still amazes me. There were people posting for Max Hall to be benched before we beat Utah and won us all over by hating them so eloquently. Not me - but there were posters posting it. Because he wasn't perfect. You may remember me. I was the idiot sticking up for Max Hall all season and proclaiming his legacy - the one that all th ehaters seem pretty comfortable with now - now that the guy that wasn't NFL material beat the saints in his first start as a Rookie. Ironic that I get called negative when I am the onte that says this class isn't perfect and so many other posters are claiming our players don't belong in D1 football. I still recall some idiot behind me at LES in the FSU game calling for Logan to be benched. FSU kept goin gafter him cause he is SHORT. But he kept making plays. Messed up here and there but made some big plays. I am alway ssticking up for the players and the coaches and the program. But if I sugest the recruiting class is not up to last year's and IMHO NC contending standards - I get called negative. In two years - three tops - jus twait - people will be posint on here that dome of these guys are all of the above derogatory things. it won't be me.

Lawboy - I assume your name calling refers to me. I suggest you consider this post constructive rather than negative. I am not Pollyanna. I am not a BYU cheerleader. I am not a BYU dreamer. I am an admitted realist. Call me a pesimist if you must - but my projections for BYU football are pretty accurate every single year - because they are realistic. Don't get me wrong. I want BYU to win every single game and I think they have a chance to win almost every single game. I am pretty happy with BYU football. I am just trying to help those on this board that will never, seemingly, be satisfied with 10+ win seasons until we don't even bother to catch Utah, TCU, and BSU, but leap right past them and win the NC - not just win a BCS Bowl or even get in one But win the NC. This is not that type of recruiting class. That is not a negative comment - realistic. I did not call this a bad class. It just isn't a great (translation: NC Contending - Heisman Tropy QB supporting) class.

And you can't keep counting the same guys we counted last year. And not every RM comes back in top shape - see Lark and Munns and see how their stock has slipped - people encouraging them to transfer since Spring on this board. BUt if a transfer last year had to sit out this year - we counted him last year - can't keep counting the same guys two or three times.

I did not check to see if my boss was lying - but USC on probabtion with scholarship limitations and no bowl games for 2 years has several ***** and several **** recruits and supposedly signed the #4 and #6 QB in the country. NC and Heisman producing schools make the list annually. I oosted the definitoin of insanity - doing the saem thing over an dover agains but expecting a diferent result. If you are happy about the results we have ben getting - like I am - this clas is fine. If you have much bigger expectations for the next set of unproven coaches we hire at rock bottom prices and expect to win the NC and produce the trophies - this class does not cut it. Respectfully disagreeing - Bib
