So its the emerald bowl. 6th pac10 choice.



I'm down with it. San Fan is a good place to go watch a bowl game. Don't mind beating up on a crappy pac10 team or crappy acc team.

We will win our share - but Don't forget the Alamo in the 1800's, CAL about 5 years ago, and Arizona a couple of years back. Mediocre PAC 12 teams will actually be pretty decent some years.



I like the Bowl Director - he said he has had his eye on BYU since the inception of the Bowl.



And this is not forever - and we can still opt out for a BCS Bowl. Hopefully we wil get one of those. But I gotta tell you - logistically, Las Vegas or So. Cal would have worked much better for me.



But hey - short plane hop from LA (when I am there at XMAS) to SFO and decent airfare. So I am OK with it.

BYU against the 6th PAC team?



Who will replace the PAC when they won't have a 6th bowl eligible team?



We might be playing Utah twice that year!

I almost typed, "Crappy, like any other non-BCS bowl." But being independent means we keep it all and don't cut a check to New Mexico for their share. So whatever it is, bonus.

I think BYU could get a bowl of this caliber by simply relying on bowls with at-large openings... I guess BYU really is on par with Army and Navy in the eyes of the bowls.



If they had signed an agreement with the Holiday or Insight Bowls, I'd be thrilled. The Emerald Bowl makes me a bit more ambivalent to a tie in.

Best answer is go undefeated and get a BCS bowl.

It will be a January bowl game, if that matters anymore.

January would at least let the kids have time off to study for finals and then allow us to use all of our practices - possibly at the expense of any Xmas vacation go home to visit the family plans the players might have.

I honestly would cry if this were the only bowl deal getting done for the next couple of seasons. Apparently there are more in the works. I'm glad that BYU will have a place to play, but I am also glad to know that there are other deals being worked out.

I asked coach Bronco Mendenhall a few minutes later, and he acknowledged that some bowl deals have been worked out, or are in the process of being worked out, but did not specify which years.

"There are [other deals being worked out], and I am more the one being notified on those. [BYU athletic director] Tom [Holmoe] is doing most of the agreeing with where we might play, etc. We might end up being two to three years out, rotating to a number of different bowl games, unless we qualify for a BCS game. But he usually just keeps me posted, rather than asking my opinion on those ones," Mendenhall said.

Its an acc team. for example the past two years they have taken boston college.



I am happy about this bowl. I think aside from bcs bowls there really isn't much difference in bowls except for location. vegas and san fran and san diego are great places to have a bowl. I would love to have agreements with any of those for years we didn't go to a bcs bowl.



I am happy about this bow tie in because of the location as well as the time of year. I may actually be able to go for once.

My favorite line from one of the articles I read on this:



in reference to the potential opponent: "Either way, the opponent is likely to be mediocre, and may even be the University of Utah."

Chances are if :utard: ended up being 6th in the PAC12, they would likely get shoved to the LV bowl rather than have the two teams face each other again.



I wasn't too thrilled to hear about the deal at first, but a deal's a deal and it shows BYU has some interest in the bowl community. Once they prove they can compete as an independent, better bowl options will appear. Winning will solve everything.



I also like that they will get to use their full allotment of post season practices with a January play date. BYU suffers from being on a semester schedule rather than a quarter schedule in when school finishes and starts during the holiday season. Here's to BYU playing in January from 1213 and beyond.

I think you have to look at this in terms of the next best alternative. ND has a tie-in with the champs sports bowl in Orlando with a 2.25M payout. BYU has a tie-in with the Fight Hunger bowl in San Francisco with a ~1M payout. Did you expect the same deal as ND? I didn't. Best case for a tie-in for BYU is the Holiday bowl at ~2.35M in San Diego or a long shot at the Insight bowl for 3M in Phoenix and I didn't really think either would happen. Next year BYU will be in the Pinstripe bowl with a 2M payout in NYC unless they go undefeated or the BIg12 doesn't fill the Holiday bowl spot.

Only if BYU can steal the bid back before another team does. We better hope no one steals it from us!

Did some "Ute" fan write the wikipedia page for the Fight hunger bowl? "In 2011, the Pac-10 team's opponent will be Army; in 2012, it will be Navy; and in 2013 it will be BYU (that is if these teams are bowl eligible which can be doubtful in the case of BYU)."

Pinstripe gets the 7th pick from the big12 which now only has 10 members and plays a 9 game conference schedule. There is no way they field 7 bowl teams and they may not even get to 5 which would give BYU a shot at the holiday bowl. I guess some ACC team could scoop up the if they all go .500 in conference like every other year but my money is on BYU in the Pinstripe bowl unless Holmoe lands some other bowl. Next year at least I would rather roll the dice and hope to land the holiday, texas or pinstripe bowl.
