Is anyone else insulted, like I am, about this

BYU the next Boise State?



I had always thought of Boise State as a next generation BYU.



Where is Boise's National Championship? Where is Boise's Heisman? Outland Trophies? Doak Walker Award? NFL vets?



Boise State has followed BYU's path much more than BYU will be following Boise State.

Typical flavor on the month article with no historical reference. Unless you cound the last 5 years as histiry.

This year BSU played 3 Friday nights, one monday, and one tuesday.

Next year BYU plays 2 Friday nights.



We'll see how that ends up, but it is definitely true BYU will be filling some of the spots BSU formerly filled on ESPN which was the point of the story.

It seems that most college football fans have short memories - it is all about what you have done lately.



BSU used to be the next BYU - mid-major, recruits the players other teams over looks, beats teams with a system and smart, disciplined, but less athletic players, etc. Their only innovation was the Blue Turf.



Painful as it is to deal with, BSU, Utah, and TCU surpassed BYU as the best of the "have nots" due to what has transpired since 1984 and especially since 1996, with 2001 seeming to provide a resurgence until Staley went down. The best BYU has done since 1984, except for 1996, is the past 4 years (before 2010 - not including it) under the coaching staff that according to Lawboy will be losing not only Hill, but two more coaches very soon.



That is just the way it is. Outside of the BUBBLE - that is how the world views the non-qualifiers - note how they give us new nicknames every once in a while - mid-major, non-BCS, non auto qualifiers, etc.



Let's hope we catch back up to BSU before - Nevada, Fresno State, AFA, Houston, TUlsa, SMU, or someone else moves in to fill trhe space that exists in the minds of most of the nation about

The BCS just took Utah and TCU off the list. Kind of did us a favor in a way. Now it is

Don't let anyone else slip in there - only studpid scheduling will by the way. Until we go undefeated - which we have not done since 1984 against any schedule - the perception outside the bubble will not go away.

I've been saying for a while now that BYU will replace BSU as the new espn "darling" - provided they win the vast majority of their games. Don't worry about Nev, FSU, or any of the others. ESPN will do very little for them and they will begin to go down in obscurity on the MTN. But ESPN will be doing an awful lot for BYU. After all is said and done, BYU is the team that ESPN just invested millions of dollars in.

The fact of the matter is that ESPN did very little for their darling Boise and much less for any one else in the WAC. Showing games on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday games isn't really that impressive. People on the East Coast weren't clamoring for Boise games like they have been for BYU games. BYU is still head and shoulders above Boise in terms of national presence.



You have to remember, those Bleacher Report articles are simply fan blogs and anyone who wants to can write one up.

When it comes to who travels best for Bowl Games ( I hope what I heard about NM Bowl is not true though), who brings fans to opponents stadiums when travelling, who will get the most TV viewers - BYU is way above the other non-autoqualifiers and above most of the qualifiers.



When it comes to national respect for what goes on when the teams take the field - that is what my post was about.



BSU became a bit of a media darling for a while - where the entire nation, except the SEC, kind of adopted them for a while and maybe that is why ESPN had them on TV at all. But there isn't much TV revenue for Utah, TCU, and BSU even when they go to BCS conferences. BYU blows their socks off when it somes to fan support.



But, if you want to talk National Rankings - Coaches Poll, Media Poll, BCS Poll, etc. If you are not sitting at zero losses you won't even be in the NC discussion - you probably get left out no matter what as a non-AQ, but while undefeated, you get talked about a lot. If you end up with 1 loss after your Bowl game - you may make Top 5 or 6 in the polls. And you get talked about. If you end up with 2 losses after the bowls, you get top 15 and maybe top 10 and you get talked about. If you end up with 3 losses, you are lucky to be ranked, may not be ranked in some years, and no matter who you played, you don't get talked about much outside of our own little bubble.



That is just how it is. So let's go undefeated. It would be really nice. If we do not do it - and scheduling is key - we better hope that UNR doesn't cake walk through the new MWC, and become the next team that gets talked about. If they win their Bowl game this year - they will get talked about this year. We just have to hope it doesn't start happening regularly. But UNR or Reno or someone has a decent chance of walking the cake every year in the new MWC - probably not as easy to walk the MWC cake as it was to walk the WAC cake though. That could help us if BSU falters again next season. Except our early schedule willmost likley take us out of the NC, Top 5, or even Top 10 discussoin before the season even starts - unless we surprise a few people and start to win em all.







Now we go undefeated or even end up 1 loss - we are right back in the discussion.

Thats exactly what proves that no matter who the Johnny-come-lately is, BYU had more National Championship talk in the 2009 season (until being not only beat, but destroyed) than Boise or TCU did this year. BYU is still the most respected of the non-aq teams. The rise of Boise, TCU, and Utah doesn't, shouldn't, and hasn't diminished this. It simply shows what a joke the BCS system is.

I agree that we were all the talk in early 2009 - but midseason we were out of the NC discussion. BSU has been all the talk since going undefeated last year and it ramped up this year until they lost. Now you just don't hear much about them.



Utah got small talk early in their first glory season but a lot of talk in January when it mattered. They got more talk the 2nd time and after beating Bana they get more talk than they deserve - like 2010 until they lost.



BYU just has to go undefeated and they will be back in the discussion big-time - at least until they lose again.

Ha. That makes me laugh. When wac(ky) Benson said boise's win over Oklahoma was the biggest in the history of the wac BYU was like: That national championship is bigger. When Benson holds conference meetings in SLC, BYU is like: That national championship is bigger.





BS follows BYU, today they have a measurement that BYU fails in: Creativity, Innovation, and dirty 1980s-SMU caliber players, but BYU follows nobody.
