Scout had him as 3 star #25 shooting guard. Only 2 schollie offers-UCLA and Indiana.

He's a combo guard that we need after this season, question is when he'll be eligible to play. His dad was his coach and he's very young having graduated high school early to go to UCLA.



We need a 1-2 for next season to help bridge the gap between Fredette-Emery and Haws-KC.



Winder, Carlino, Martineau doesn't sound too bad.



I was hoping for a juco all america at the point, but this might be better.



He should be a high school senior.

He has to be impressed with our offense and coaching after tonight. He did not play for UCLA yet this year and obviously can transfer and play without losing eligibility.

We lose Emery, Fredette, Magnusson, and KC to mission.



We get back Austin and Harward from missions, signed Harrison and have one scholarship left; which we had offered to Brett Kingma.



Carlino is a Kingma clone with a litle less offense and a little more d, but he's already had experience at the college level, even though he should have graduated high school this coming May.

Hmm, so at the point next year we have Martineu? And maybe Carlino? Harrison is a wing right? Oh I am forgetting Winder. That is a going to be a big change from Fredette to Point by committee.

Fredette is simply irreplaceable.



Next year is going to be light years different than this team.

May, 2009: Matt is a solid lefty combo guard. He is strong and skilled. He has the ability to play either guard spot equally well. He is a solid point guard because he has a great basketball IQ and is very effective running a team. On the wing he becomes a scorer that can get some buckets off the bounce and is also a good shooter with range to 20 feet. His shot can be a little inconsistent but it is definitely good enough to be a threat. Matt is a transplant from Arizona, this will be his first year in Indiana. Matt is tough and plays with a bit of a mean edge. He is a nice rebounder for his position and is not afraid to stick his nose inside. He is a decent defender but sometimes struggles with very quick players on the perimeter.



September, 2008: This lefty has a strong basketball I.Q. along with an outstanding work ethic. He scores from all different spots on the floor. What makes Carlino so good is he can beat you with the deep 3-point shot, pull-up from 15-17' and drive to the basket and finish. Defensively he keeps his opponent in front of him while off the ball he anticipates passing lanes and understands how to rotate when helping his teammates.



July, 2008: Carlino is a well-known commodity on the west coast because of his scoring prowess; however, his shot selection most of the time is questionable to say the least. He is a prolific shooter and his release is textbook, but at this stage of his career he has a lot to learn if he plans on playing the point at the next level. Although he still has 3 years left of high school basketball his frame is quite mature and he doesn't possess great quickness. He struggled separating himself from defenders off the bounce and as a result he became turnover prone. He will, on occasion, locate open teammates and he has the savvy to deliver the nifty assist, but most of the time he is hunting for his own shot. If Carlino decides to tone down his shot selection and develop other aspects of his game (getting others involved) he should be able to play somewhere on the Division I level.



October, 2007: If there is a better freshmen point guard in the country than Carlino, I'd be very surprised. Carlino plays at a pace well beyond his years. He has a solid frame with long arms and overall very good length for the "one" spot. Although his speed and quickness are not at that elite level, his skill and craftiness are that of a college player. His jump shot is pure and feathery and he can get it off quickly as well. This lefty favors his strong hand, however, he is skilled enough to take defenders off the bounce (has a solid crossover move) with his right hand. He does have that scorer's mentality, but he made a number of nifty passes (off of pick-n-roll sets) during this event (2007 Northern Cal Super 100) -- some of which were of the spectacular variety. Overall, Carlino is one of the more complete guards I've witnessed at such an early age, and it will be interesting to see his progress in the coming years.



September, 2007: Matt is a solid combo guard. This lefty has good skills. I think he is better at the 2 because he is a good shooter. He is being groomed to be a point guard. He is strong for a freshman. In fact his body is so developed I am scared that he might not have a great deal of upside. He is still very good and will be a high major player. He is very fundamental and knows how to play. Matt is a top 10 prospect in the 2011 class.

Nielsen is straight to mission... we have one more scholarship to give this year and Carlino would be a perfect fit.

Wait a sec, if this kid is playing for UCLA this year, how would he be able to play for us next year, with no sit-out season?

He hasn't played. He's redshirted but expected to play which is why he wants out (plus Howland is just not a very good coach). He left school and IF the NCAA forces him to sitout a year, he can still play next season, just not the 1st couple of weeks. It's possible he'll be eligible from minute one because he left school and never played.



Remember, he should be a high school senior right now (though that has zero effect on his eligibility obviously)...

He definitely could vie for playing time next year and help out immediately which is what he's looking for. But... got to ask the question... if he's not happy for any reason, what's to stop him from bailing yet again? Not to say we don't take him, but isn't that something to think about?
