In all honesty, Crowton was the last OC who let the QB play freely. It worked great in 2001 because we had great talent at QB and RB. Didn't work in 2002-2004.

Lavell didn't have an who let the QBs play after 1996. Chow hamstrung all his QBs after Sark. He was scared they weren't ready for it so he limited them.

Same thing happened this year. Anae was afraid of/for Heaps so he limited him. He let him loose after the bye week and Heaps responded. He reigned him back in to start the Utah game but still some chances and we scored limited points. Then he basically benched him while still on the field in the final drive after. It was only a few improvisations that drove BYU down the field before a timeout was called and Heaps had the keys taken away again.

I'm guessing that we play UTEP in the bowl like we have nothing to lose. Just let the QB loose, like we did against UNLV and Colorado State.

Mars, thanks for the link to Gordon Hudson. I enjoyed reading several of his articles / blogs.

I think Jake & BYU play UTEP much like they did CSU.

I think so too.

Anae has got to go. I read the article. It makes me sick. The Cougs deserved the "W." They beat the Yewts. Anae lost that game with poor/conservative/scared decision making.

I vaguely recall Gordon Hudson's career ending up in Logan - one of the other times USU pulled the upset - against a highly touted, Steve Young team. Iirc, Steve Young got a concussion. Who did Hudson blame that USU loss on?

Don't get me wrong. I love Gordon Hudson. I love Steve Young. I have always thought Robert Anae was stubborn in his play calling. BTW - who does Hudson coach? Thought so!

I'm all for the promotion of Doman to OC and letting Anae move on to greener pastures, but what happens when Anae goes and we still don't beat the TCU's of college football? Who do we blame then? We're so focused on blaming one man for our problems that I think we miss seeing a lot of other people's shortcomings (ie-Jaime Hill). So who becomes our whipping boy once Anae is gone?

I wouldn't call the 1982 Steve Young led team "highly touted." They'd just lost Jim McMahon and the Cougs were 5-2 when then went up to Logan

UTEP is on a slide - but I hope we aren't taking them too lightly. I know our team is in a bind re final exams - not sure how UTEP semester runs. I did read the UTEP coach - a very good coach - talking about 15-20 practices. Will we get that many?

UTEP - based on the little bit I read - has had key players injured late in the season including QB and RB - hence the slide after a great, by UTEP standards, start. Could be a trap game. I read ticket sales are low for BYU. What a way to show ESPN how well we travel. For UTEP - this Bowl is big-time. They have not had one in a while. Their seniors have never gone bowling. They will be hungry.

Bottom line - I have no idea how good they will be. I hope we are prepared for a war. They might be every bit as good as Utah or as bad as Wyoming - depends on whether they have really healed up.

I hope we play to win. We need a win. I hope Anae puts us in a position to win like he did against Utah. If he does, I hope special teams does not touch a shanked punt - fumble, have a blocking breakdown that opposing coaches had seen on film - blocked kick, and that the defense gets down when they make an interception - bad call but fumble, and that the d does not give up a couple of big plays over the top in a late game breakdown - two TD gifts to opponent, and I hope our highly touted freshmen - Heaps and Juice - do not get confused on a simple handoff - fumble. Otherwise we will have to blame it all on the playcalling.

5-2 BYU teams with future NFL MVP QBs and, at the time, the best tight end in BYU history, are supposed to beat bad USU teams - even in Logan.

And yes - no - they were not a top 20 team. That is not what I meant. They were good up to that point and USU was not. But Steve Young was - Young relatively speaking - compared to Jim McMahon, and had his ups and owns. Kind of like most new starting QBs. USU was one of the downs.

The Glory Years - Right?

1982

Date BYU Opp.

9/2 27 at UNLV 0

9/11 14 at Georgia 17

9/25 38 Air Force 39

10/2 51 at UTEP 3

10/9 40 at New Mexico 12

10/16 39 Hawaii (H) 25

10/23 34 Colorado St. 18

10/30 17 at Utah St. 20

11/6 23 Wyoming 13

11/13 58 San Diego St. 8

11/20 17 at Utah 12

12/17 17 ^ Ohio St. (B) 47

Coach: LaVell Edwards

Record: 8-4

Conf.: WAC, 1st

So a narrow loss at Georgia. A narrow loss in the first game at expanded LES to a very good AFA team early - don't play AFA early - remember that - and this year we did it at their crib with inexperienced QBs and no supporting cast. A Bowl loss to a very good Ohio State team. iirc, OSU started out 0-3 or so, due to a key injury, and then wnet 9-0 after that.

But then that loss to USU in Logan. How did Gordon Hudson explain that one. Who was calling the plays?

I could not find USU schedule / results back to 1982 and I got sick of looking at the autographed USU Vs BYU football on their website being auctioned.

1- Dumb question. Was Crowton simply a "whipping boy" because BYU fans always need SOMEONE to blame?

2- We'll blame the limited recruiting base. ;)

Don't confuse future success with present expectations. Steve Young wasn't a HOF'er in 1982, nor did he play like one: 18 TDs 18 INTs, 3100 yards, 140 PER. Compared the '81 (30 TDs, 7 INTs, 3555 yards, 154.99 PER) and '83 (33 TDs, 10 INTs, 3900yards, 168.45 PER) seasons the BYU passing game was very pedestrian.

I'm not so sure it was a bad USU team in 1982. Four of their five OL were 1st or 2nd team all conference. They finished 5-6 but entered the BYU game at 4-2. They may not have been good, but they certainly weren't their usual awful selves.

As the UCLA spanking, no that was 1983. If you count a 37-35 win a spanking. BYU has been spanked multiple times by UCLA and only spanked them once in 2008.

Great question - other than starting out 12-0 or so with the team Crowton inherited from Lavell, when most fans claimed the cupboard was bare(they all look great with a senior NFL calibur QB and the best RB in school hsitory, don't they) - and that when Crowton got his own TRAINER and athletic players and blah blah blah he would catapult us to the next level - some of us said - why don't we wait until he proves it before we annoint him deity -

Anyway what did Crowton do other than lose the next two when he lost his star running back and then have several losing seasons in a row with his own recruits and his own trainer.

BTW - I thought he was finally starting to show improvement when they canned him - but then the off th efield stuff - players booted for HC, coaches that seemed to have drug or alcohol problems, etc. It just got to be too much - I suppose.

Steve Young was a new starting QB and played like one even as a Junior. They all do. I won't go back into that. But a close loss to Georgia, a close loss to a very good AFA team early in the year, and a Bowl Loss to an Ohio State team that was on an 8-0 or so run after an 0-3 start due to injury Vs a 5-6 USU team that started out OK, but failed as the season took it's toll - was highly unexpected and nobody was happy about it.

But hey - QB gets a concussion - all everything TE blows a knee = stuff happens. My point was TIC - it was not one person's fault. Stuff happens. And even BYU teams starting a future Hall of Famer and fthe best tight end in school history - with enough talent to go 11-1 the next season after an openign loss to Baylor and 13-0 NC the year after that - sometimes lose to USU in LOgan when USU wasn't any better than USU was this year.

So with the USU barometer - we are two years away from a NC.

That's an unfair analogy. Anae didn't do away with BYU traditions like firesides or encourage players to "just don't get caught." There were more problems created by Crowton than just on-the-field issues. And I've already given one example of how we overlooked a glaring problem with our defense because we were so focused on Anae.

I actually like BYU's current offense. It moves the ball up and down the field almost at will and scores points. The offense isn't the problem, it's the play calling and adjustments. Change that and we're golden.

Actually I like any offense that scores and gives us wins.
