Jake Heaps is starting to sound like a team leader - very accountable and respectful of seniority in "BYU EAGER TO PLAY IN NEW MEXICO BOWL" - the link to the article is in the box to the right if you scroll down

Jake Heaps Quote

Heaps believes his growth as a quarterback from the beginning of the season until now can be seen in his maturation level. BYU went 5-2 the last half of the season as Heaps continued to improve, finishing with more than 2,000 yards passing and 11 touchdowns.

“I’m a lot more comfortable and confident as a leader,” he said.

Good! Glad to have witnessed it - glad he recognizes it - glad it is happening. It's a natural. Jake is a very capable, talented & bright QB. It was a matter of time. The "time" element can be painful along the way. Hopefully the roughest & rockiest part is over. Looking for a Big "W" against UTEP!!!

Just imagine what could have been had he not been handcuffed all spring, offseason and fall camp and through half the season. And to answer what you're thinking right now: No, I doubt I will ever get over that. It's as close to an unpardonable sin as there is in BYU football for me. :)

Just because Jake is where he is now, does not mean he would not have struggled early in the season even if things had been handled differently. What's done is done.

I am just glad he survived it. They sure tried hard to destroy him. :)

Of course. But I would bet the farm that we would have a better record and would be in a much better position and bowl.

I think 2 things turned out season:

1)Bronco taking control again

2)Game planning improved after the USU debacle.

Had we handled things the whole season the way they were done after USU, we go 8-4 most likely, better bowl, and people have even higher expectations for next year. But they didn;t here we are, and I actually think the younger guys will be better for it long term because they learned tough lessons this year. Winning does not come easy, even with great talent.

If Heaps had been named starter in the Spring, BYU would have started out 0-5, Heaps would have been sacked and hammered while the OL figured out how to protect, Heaps would probably have goten aserious injury, and Nelson may have gotten one too, and we would have been whining about how they handled Lark.

The coaches brought Heaps along faster than any true freshman has been brought along in BYU history and faster than any true freshman - save five or ten - in the history of college football have been brought along. And, although dinged up, he is relatively healthy at his point and playing much better.

If they had thrown Jake Heaps to the wolves any sooner - that would have been a travety. It is unfortunate that they could not have held off a few weeks longer.

We should be appreciating how this staff made something of a complete rebuild season on offense and defense. Just look around the country folks and see what happened to programs that have a heck of alot better recruiting classes every single year than th eone great recruiting class BYU had that some of you think was supposed to take the team to the next level overnight.

It takes time and year after year of great recruiting classes - and even thejhn

You get a $5M a year coach at Texas who suddenly is incompeteent, needs a wake-up call, is outcoached, can't game-plan, and can't call playsw. Isn't that amazing how storied coaches at Texas, Florida, and elsewherre are suddenly stupid - just becasue they lost a few key players to the NFL.

But after their wake-up calls, and added experience fo rtheir new players - they will be geniuses again.

But yes - whichever one of you it was that pointed it out - I Know that you are never going to get over it! In fact - you are blinded by it.

I like what I see in Heaps - lately. I hope it continues and continues to improve. And, If it does - Sorry - I am HAPPY!

Heaps was brought along faster than any other true freshman in the history of college football (save 5 or 10)?

The history of college football?

There are probably 100 true freshman that were brought along this year better than Heaps in Division 1 alone...

Hello Blue

We are talking about Quarterbacks. So skip all the other Red Herrings, quotations out of context, and BS.

Quarterbacks.

Quarterbacks.

Quarterbacks - TRUE FRESHMAN QUARTERBACKS.

get it - APPLES to APPLES.

Ok - now this is simple. Name all of the ones this year - starting as true freshmen - by game four - having split the time equally in games 1-3. Limit yourself to the ones where it worked out OK in the end and the True Freshman QB was actually playing like he belonged on the field by Game 8.

Make the list right here. Now of course these True Freshman QBs will have 2000+ yards of passing, comparable TDs, ended on a 5-2 streak, etc. to equal how Heaps was brought along. Then go ahead and put an * by the ones that were brought along faster / better. I won't make this hard for you. I won't make you list only those on teams that were rebuilding on both sides of the ball at the same time they broke in said TRUE FRESHMAN QB.

Limit this to QBs - if you do not know the difference between bringing a True Freshman Field general along Vs say a RB where it happens all the time or a DL where we do it all the time - then you don't watch much football.

TRUE FRESHMAN QBs. Period. I don't wan to hear about the RS Freshmen QBs and I do not want ot hear about any positoin other than QB.
B

if you are talking about qaurterbacks, then say quarterbacks...

And I would still contend that he has been brought along faster than any other true freshman qb save 5 to 10.

That Jake is where he is now, says more about Jake and his level of preparedness than it does about how he has been handled. You really stand by qb2 - with an injured player getting half the snaps? You really stand by rotating him in every other set with a non passer, gimmick quarterback - while he is injured with a shoulder injury, and a finger injury? You really stand by benching a kid for throwing an interception (his fault) while your receivers that ran routes too closely go out the next set? And benching our throwing quarterback, for the non-throwing, injured, gimmick one when we are behind by more than 2 touchdowns in the 3rd and 4th quarter of a game? Or that the only thing that stopped this incredible waste of everyone's time (qb2) is that said injured quarterback got injured badly enough to have season-ending surgery? If your answer is "yes" to any of these questions, we can end the debate now...

He has been mismanaged more than any player I have ever personally witnessed - with our entire 2010 TE group taking a distant second. All off this caused by the same guy, your good buddy ol' pal the OC.

You still didn't name even one.

And - have you ever considered that Heaps may have been pulled to protect him. Our blocking had broken down and Heaps would have been hammered with no time to throw and he might have gotten the season injury.

Two or three games later - Matt Reynolds was healthy, FBs were getting the hang of things, the new center was settling in, Braden Brown who was almost new was settling in, the OL wSn't false starting 5+ times per game - then maybe a True Freshman can survive.

Can't think of a True Freshman QB brought along faster this year - feel free to go back as many years as you want to look. You will find a few and they will be surrounded by an experienced supporting cast.

I realize Jake Heaps was rated as the #1 QB recruit. Do you realize that he was not the consensus #1 QB and not the #1 overall recruit, and that the consensus was that it was a down year for QBs and that none were sure-fire NFL talents.

Too many BYU fans want to assume that Jake Heaps is the best QB that ever breathed air and therefore with a few more practice snaps - bam he could take the reins of a team rebuilding in both sides of the ball, and be ready to go. Throwing Jake Heaps to the wolves in game 1 would have been a travesty.

Go ahead - right here.

List the True Freshman QBs in the entire history of football that started week 1 with a rebuilding offense and a rebuilding defense so bad the DC had to be fired mid-season, and survived the season - let alone flourished at the end.

List them here. There may not be any. I can assure you there will not be many. Enlist your friends to help you. This should be fun. Make sure they are not red-shirt freshmen so I don't have to call you out on it.

Now you are just being stupid. You want me to list every true freshman qb in the history of college football with a rebuilding offense, and defense ... blah blah blah....

Like always, you are reaching. But hey, you can just write another post claiming to always be misquoted, and that you really do like the things that you write so passionately against.

And if that doesn't work, then make fun of cougar fans as being stupid and ignorant, and the institution as being a cut-rate, mid-tier program...

I'm not playing your game. Why don't you go through and answer the questions in the above post to you. Do you stand by how he has been managed this year? And if you think Jake isn't NFL talent, you might want to take to Coach Doman, Mendenhall, Callhoun, Sarkisian, that have mentioned on record he will have the talent to be in the NFL. Or the 30 offers he had from top tier schools might tip you off. I really don't know what you have against Heaps, but it is getting ridiculous...

He is a special talent, and was mismanaged here from day one. He has grown in-spite of the coaching he has received, as I would imagine most of our offensive personnel could claim. It is time for Anae to go, and you can either jump in the lifeboats with everyone else, or go down with the "Anae is the best we'll get / Heaps isn't all that great / Riley for quarterback" ship. I don't care about any one player, or coach above the program. They come and go through the years. I love BYU football.

I really don't care what you do, but don't presume to tell me that I need to spend my time doing pointless, stupid errands for you.

Your hatred blinds you. At the risk of setting off another round of RIley Nelson bashing borne of the same hatred - anyone or anything getting in the way of your fantasy about Heaps starting all 12 games and raking up 4K yards as a true freshman - try to remeber ANAE did not know Nelson was injured and the injury was less severe in the beginning - but yeah blame that on Anae. Blame our inept defense on Anae. Don't even consider the challenge of developing Heaps when he is not a scrambler and the BYU OL was not blocking worth beans in week 2 and 3 and then improved slowly after that.

WHile you are naming people - name the OCs that looked great breaking in a True Freshman QB, especially when the star RB got booted off the team right before Spring drills and it becomes a total rebuild on both sides of the ball and the defense sucks so bad the DC gets fired mid-season. List those Offensive Coordinators right here.

Obviously I knew you couldn't even think of 1. BTW - I have nothing against Heaps. Just let him prove himself and improve himself. Heaps will be fine. I don't hear him whining. I did hear a quote from Bronco praising Doman as the best QB coach in college football - and specifically stating that Doman was 100% responsible for the development of Heaps and NOONE interfered.

I actually think the development of Heaps has been impressive given that circumstances caused it to be rushed. QB2 is the reason we beat UW - got that straight from one of their defensive leaders. I would much rather have seen one of our highly touted 4 QBs ready to step up and run the whole show. None were ready to do it then - and couldn't have been then - if you disagree - try really hard to come up with one example where someone did pull it off in similar circumstances. Try to come up with just one - and all of your friends can even help you.

Luckily Heaps seems like he may be ready now - I am happy. But go ahead and keep hating.

PS - I did the errand for you in advance. THERE AREN'T ANY!

Bottom line: who cares how it was handled at this point. Its done. It can't be changed and we'll never know if the results would have different.

What I do know is that Jake Heaps played very well over the last four games. Well enough for BYU to go 4-0. He's going to get better. He's not there yet and still has things to work on.

He's becoming a leader. He's starting to learn how to lead men. In high school, kids will follow you because you're the best player. At BYU it takes more and I think he's strarting to do that.

He will be a better QB and better person for overcoming the struggles and obstacles he endured. Some his doing, others the coaches.

Can't we all just move on. Jake is not a freshman QB anymore. He's a BYU QB. He needs to be judged by that standard. And he's been well above that standard the last month. And think he'll be well above it against UTEP as well.

On a side note, if anyone thinks that Heaps won't win the starting job in spring is flat out wrong - that includes Bronco. Bronco may think Nelson will have a chance, but I'm not sure Riley will be able to throw and there is no way any other QB on the roster is going to have timing and experience in this offense than Jake.

I'll name several true freshman brought along faster than Jake IN THE HISTORY OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL. As in started game 1 as true freshmen. Again, a fail argument. But I do like how you tried to them turn it to this year only after your bombastic statement. Typical water muddy tactics of a troll.

Terrelle Pryor--Ohio State

Matt Barkeley-- USC

Philip Rivers-- NC State

Jacory Harris-- Miami

Your devils advocate, glass half empty schtick is beyond tiresome.

Just look at our 2011 schedule alone. Central Florida brought on their freshman QB quicker this year than dumb Anae brought on Heaps (as a non-starter at first). And it showed in both their results and the QBs stats.

Personally, I thought this thread was bib's way of trolling that Jake Heaps started the season a poor leader, which I don't believe to be true in the slightest. But trolls will be trolls.

Lawboy - try not to be an ass. You may recall that I said there were probably 5-10 of them in the history of NCAA football. So you came up with four. Keep going. I am just trying to show - it does not happen very often. I will go look a few of these up and make sure they were True Freshmen, see what supporting cast they had, see how many defensive coordinators got fired mid-season, and see how they performed in that freshman season.

Off the top of my head - let's see. Philip Rivers was developed so well in his freshman and sophomore seasons that NC State had to bring in a new coach to develop him later - you remember the guy - Norm Chow. Now if he was developed so much better than Heaps in year 1, why did they need to bring in a PROVEN coach to develop him in his Junior or Senior season. I will go back and tighen up the details on this one. But that was the gist of it. Fail #1.

Now - for the other three - let's see National Championship Contenders almost every year (exception for Miami - maybe due to bringing along a True Freshman QB). Beat BYU soundly in recruiting class rankings and NFL player production every year (so maybe surrounded by experienced talent from day 1). Big name coaches. Big bucks budgets. 7 home games a year plus a few cupcakes early (except USC - especially OSU). And even so - the list is pretty short.

I will be back to provide some stats to see how well these guys were brought along. But let's be optimistic here. Well that is 4 - at best - so far. Give me six more. Go ahead and put the years and strats and team records and supporting cast and fired defensive coordinator mid-season details on there too - to kind of help us see how often any True Freshman gets brought along in dire circumstances any better than Heaps was.

Not to reignite another argument, but I would be just fine if bronco were to bring in Norm Chow to help Doman turn Heaps into a Heisman Tropy WInner and BYU's offense into a powerhouse. WHy - because he has done it at three different schools under three different head coaches. And, he has done it within the constraints that BYU has to deal with.
