BYU to get deal with Holiday Bowl?

TaloTBS says "Lunch with AAD today... look for a BYU/Holiday Bowl multi-year deal in the future" And Drew was saying the same thing today.

I was kind of hoping BYU would avoid bowl tie-ins. Having a tie-in as an independent means playing in the same bowl year after year after year. There are always at-large openings as various conferences don't meet their quota, and you have to think BYU would be a pretty attractive at-large selection (instead of the #4 team from the MAC) and could demand richer payouts as well as provide more opportunities for the team to play in different places around the country and get that national exposure.

Maybe BYU gets a few tie-ins. Year 1 we go to the Holiday Bowl. Year 2 we go to the Vegas Bowl. Year 3 we go to the Christmas Bowl - which is up and running by then. Year 4 we go to the BCS. Rinse and repeat.

Which means we would play the PAC-12 #8 or ACC #7 every year (in the the worst bowl from a conference), if not the MAC #4 or sunbelt #3. Ugh.

A bowl tie in with the Holiday Bowl is going to have a minimum win total to get invited. BYU won't go their every year unless the meet that minimum. This is just speculation on my part but I don't think the Holiday bowl wants to invite a 6-6 BYu team if it can get away with it.

who cares about this. it is bcs or bust every year for us at this point. the competition for that spot just got a lot easier now that utah and tcu are out of that picture. Its between us and boise state each year. just win on the field and these tie in wont matter :)

Holiday Bowl is in a nice weather place and the payoff is descent. Sign on the dotted line. As noted, there surely will be a minimum of wins expected as they have had the #2 PAC10 and #2 Big 12 for several years now and the bowl has had some really good line ups. They're not looking to downgrade certainly.

To me, you always strive for the BCS, but when you land outside of that circle, you want the best matchup possible. I'm actually looking at the current bowl this year to be adequate and I believe finishing 7-6 is a whole lot better for 2011 than getting a "confidence" win over a ranked team and taking the chance to finish at 6-7, but if it would have fallen to that opportunity, we'd have met it head on.

I'm assuming that the tie-in will be fairly flexible in the current BCS environment--

If BYU finishes with 10 or more wins, the Bowl A is obligated to take BYU, unless BYU is selected as a BCS at large. If BYU finishes with 6 or more wins, but less than 10 wins, the Bowl A has right of first refusal.

It isn't so much that the Holiday Bowl has downgraded as that the Insight and Alamo bowls have upgraded. The payout (2M) has been stable at the Holiday bowl but with the upgrades at the other bowls the Holiday bowl now has the 4th pick among PAC-12 teams and 5th pick among the Big12. Still they almost ended up with a dream match-up - Nebraska-ND this year (if only UW had lost they would have had it).

For the Holiday bowl they can either sign BYU or stick with the 5th place Big12 school. It is a tough decision financially, but I think they'll stick with the Big12 and hope one of the midwest schools falls to them each year. I'm sure we would all love to see BYU back in San Diego, but I think the best BYU gets is one out of four years the Holiday bowl can pick BYU, similar to ND bowl tie-ins. For the short term I think BYU will fill the empty Big12 bowl slots now that they only have 10 members which probably means the Pinstripe bowl rather than the Holiday bowl.

I personally like the tie-in. There's zero doubt where fans can make their plans, a guarantee of a BYU friendly crowd every year, BYU recruits ever year in SoCal, and a history of good games in the Holliday Bowl, not to mention the weather in San Diego is worth the price of admission.

I'd much rather be tied into San Diego than the 2 miserable games I spent watching in Memphis, or the Motor City in Detroit.

I also like the tie in because it's ESPN friendly and BYU might actually have input on who our competition will be. The guaranteed pay day is not a bad deal either. Stability is good and winning is good. There's enough up in the air by being independent, we needed some stability in the form of a BYU friendly, fan friendly, weather friendly tie-in.

I agree. I would take holiday bowl every year happily. at large bowls are almost always going to be a downgrade from the holiday bowl.

If you can get the Holiday Bowl, you take it. The game is in San Diego, and LaVell's teams never tired of it. The payout is set at $2.2M per team. NM Bowl is $750k. LV Bowl is $1M. If you can get a deal to get that annual payout on a year you are really good, but not BCS, you take it. An extra $2.2M for BYU sports is a good thing. Especially compared to what else is out there for at-large bowls.

I actually like the idea of having a high win total tied to the Holiday Bowl. Being Independent, if we lose a couple of games and are out of the BCS picture, it would be nice to have a 9 or 10 win requirment for the Holiday Bowl as motivation. We can take an at large if less than 9 wins because that's all we would deserve.

It almost replaces what a conference championship gives a one or two loss team.
