What is Stepping Up?

I've heard a lot of talk about how Davies and the post needs to step up if BYU is to be really good this year. So I was wondering what does Davies need to do to be considered having stepping it up?

14 points and 8 rebounds a game?

12 and 7?

Thoughts?

Stay out of foul trouble

Seconded.

If Davies starts and has 1 foul or less in the first half, and finishes a game with 3 fouls or less, he's done a great job and will help us tremendously.

If we could count on Davies to play 25-30 minutes with effort and without fouling out. He would easily average 12-7. The biggest part of it is just him staying focused and being in the right spots.

Or if he suddenly becomes Rafael Araujo and can make 3 pointers on a regular basis in addition to shooting 90%+ from the paint AND 95% FTs.

That's all.

Good luck with that part. He MAYBE weighs as much as Hafa... if he's giving Martineau a piggy back ride...

Actually this is a part of my frustration with him-- I expected him to put on some muscle between his freshman and sophomore years. He looks exactly the same as he did last season.

Agreed to a certain extent, however, some guys, even GREAT ball players, just never put on a lot of mass. Think about the body-types of Garnett and Bosh. They're cut, but not bulky like a Dwight Howard or Jermaine O'Neal. I think Brandon actually does look a bit more fit than he was last year (shoot, he's still a CHILD! Last year what little fat he had was BABY fat!) and while some of that is just him turning from a skinny kid into a skinny adult, he seems to be using his power more effectively. Some of that's experience, but some of it almost has to be the fact he actually has a bit more power.

While he may not have bulked up, he's certainly playing stronger.

Last year he averaged one rebound every 4.55 minutes or 8.78 rebounds per 40 minutes. This year those number are up to one rebound every 3.25 minutes or 12.31 rebounds per 40 minutes.

Last year it was 1.27 blocks per 40 minutes, this year it's 1.96. And his points per 40 minutes are up from 15.87 to 21.26.

He's much stronger this year. Those are improvements of 40.2% in rebounding, 54.3% in blocks and 34.0% in scoring.

How about taysaun prince. That guy could have used some bulk.

I agree with the sentiment that if he could keep out of foul trouble he would have no problem average 12 and 7 a night which would be HUGE for this team if we could depend on it. If other teams knew they could no longer double Jimmer, or at least double him all game long, that would open up so much more of our offense. The when they started trying to key in on one or the other just dish it around and find the open man. I really do believe we are good at finding the open man. I just don't think we are very good at starting inside and getting the post involved. We fix that and this team could be unstoppable. But Jimmer has got to have faith in the post in order for that to happen. And it looks like that confidence is slowly building.

12+ points and at least 5-7 boards a game. To do that, he'll have to stay out of foul trouble.

ha HA! I'd love to see an actual stat of winning tip to winning game ratio.

Probably pretty similar to football's coin-toss winner/game winner.

Davies already has stepped up the last several games as have others. Shooting was the main problem for this team and it is much better lately and Davies has stepped up his all-around game. He is not perfect. Who is? He is not a 1st round pick. Who is? He has been solid and at times, exciting.
