They stole our signals in 1985. We were ranked and comming off our National championship of 1984. I still haven't forgiven their cheating.

iirc, this supposedly happened in 1985, and although we were undefeated the prior year, at the time we had already lost to UCLA earlier, might have still been ranked #7, and UTEP had no wins, we three games that year - UCLA, UTEP, and Ohio State.
I don't ever recall seeing a confession or a convictoin that signals were actually stolen.
Either way, I think BYU coaches made a judgment error, iirc, and were resting Glenn Kozlowski and Mark Bellini to let injuries heal and looked past UTEP. Bosco, although it did not come out until later (read this if you are a Nelson Hater that thinks he should have disclosed his injury sooner), had an injury to his throwing shoulder. He played with that injury all year and then sat on the Green Bay Packers bench wit th einjury for a year or two before getting cut. UTEP came out with a wierd defense and rushed only 1, 2, or at most 3 players and droped everyone else into coverage. Since BYU QBs were never turned loose to run, and we didn't have an overwhelming running game, and probably had not practiced to run on UTEP, BYU just fizzled all day.
But people did claim that Anae was calling the plays or that UTEP wiretapped the headphones or Chow was too predictable and UTEP did seem to know what was coming on every play. Kind of like our opponents now.
Our arrogance of this is what we are going to do and just try to stop us may have done ourselves in.
And, I swear there was this eerie swarm of crickets all over the field - kind of like when the pioneers first came to SLC although last year someone claims I have that confused with another game.

Except not on their home field, and really, the history is just not there. Nor the familiarity. BYU should beat UTEP by 10 pts or more.

Yeah, I am not that worried about losing this game, but it appears that they are quite motivated and it would be a big deal for them to win. saysi it would be a his 'marquee' victory. really? beating a 6-6 byu team would be his marquee victory? well that and the fact that will have a lot more fans there than we will.
Our guys just need to come ready to play. if they do we will win comfortably.

I remember that 1985 game, and it was outrageous that an interception thrown by Bosco in their end-zone was run back for 100 yards, which essentially cost BYU the game. Kelly Smith (WR) was the only guy with a favorable angle to make a stop, but Smith was egregiously clipped with no call. I happened to run into Kelly Smith the very next week while standing in line at the mental health facility's Haunted Castle (those were the days) and he said that he was definitely clipped, and did not know why it was not called. He also said that all through that game, there was frustration for the BYU offense in not being able to make plays without being disrupted. He did not say anything about signals being stolen, but that would answer a lot of questions about a very anomalous game.
