This is why byu has a good shot at joining the big12 in my opinion. its not just about money, its prestige and conference reputation that play a LARGE role in getting into the title game. While not having a conference championship and a perceived strong conference relative to others wont keep you out, it doesn't help them get it as it has done in the past.

excellent article. i think the odds are good that the big12 realize that while they are getting more money with just ten teams their prestige and reputation are going to be hurt because they stayed at 10. I see them adding two schools in the near future.

And as for the Big Ten and Pac-10, they’ve surrendered. They expanded so they could stage a title game. At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah and Colorado.

If we are courted, we should only agree if

1) we can keep the rights to broadcast/rebroadcast games on BYUTV

2) any agreement keeps all of the TX schools in the league in all sports... I don't want to be left twisting in the wind if TX pulls a "BYU" adn decides they can get a better deal if they go independent.

I'd still like to know the details of our agreement with the WCC. If we are committed there, it may make sense to go the the Big-12 for football only, at least for the near future, then add the other sports after our commitment to the WCC is complete.



That's assuming, of course, that the Big-12 would be amenable to that kind of arrangement.

an additional reason to start with football only: no-Sunday play is not an issue

Big XII might love us for football only. It would work great for us as well. Of course, they would have trouble finding one other football only school, and it makes zero sense for them to go to 11 schools for hoops. Messes up the travel schedule. So I just do not see that happening, unless they can get Notre Dame for football only as well, which I do not see. But the Big XII would be wise to explore that option. BYU and ND football only.

byu and west virginia is kind of interesting as well if wv accepted. it woudl be kind of like tcu going to the big east for them. but if they are afraid pitt and maybe rutgers are going to ditch them, then maybe they would accept.
