Alex Kuresa - D-News Mr. Football - Where Does He Fit In?

Kuresa leaves Mountain Crest as the state's all-time leader in:



1. total yards of offense (12,917),

2. passing yards (10,951),

3. passing touchdowns (101),

4. completions (751)

5. attempts (1,154).



He is tied with Riley Nelson, a former Mr. Football award winner from Logan High and a future teammate at BYU, with touchdowns-responsible-for at 130.



Kuresa, listed at 6-foot-1, 165 pounds as a senior, led the Mustangs to three semifinal appearances and one state championship game during his high school career. He had a 33-8 record as a starting quarterback.



Seems like he fits the Ty Detmer mold. Any thoughts of what his future might hold at BYU?

I don't know his religious status or exact age, but it sure would be nice if he could go on his mission first thing, then redshirt during Heaps' senior year.



Then he would be ready to continue the tradition of Quaterback U without all the growing pains that Heaps has had

Shouldn't he be going to utah since they are the pac 12?

Kuresa is not a D1 QB. Detmer-esque comparisons are 20 years too late. You can't play major college football anymore at 5-10 (there's no way he's 6-1) and 165 pounds. If AK is to make the field at BYU it's going to have to be at another position.

Is 6'1" his true height or waring cleats and his helmet, ya never know with some? We're signing some on the OL that are 6'8" so he'll need every inch he can get. Maybe he'll grow some more but most are pretty set on height at that age. I also hope he's not another Riley type...undersized body oversized heart. Sometimes that works but more often it doesn't translate to the top level of D-1.

good point.

Let's wait until Heaps has a season or two of very strong play before we worry about him leaving early. He's going to need to play like he did over the last month for the next two years if he's going to be a leave-early prospect.

how big is Kellen moore? he can't be much bigger can he?

Max Hall? Drew Brees? There are a lot of smaller than average QBs out there that do just fine.



It will be interesting to see where Kuresa ends up. Obviously he's got talent at QB, but I would take playing time over playing a "favorite" position.

His brother was a 6'4" 330 O-lineman. I like the mission, red-shirt, grow 2 inches and 30 pounds plan. At 6'3" 215 he'll fit in just fine. (By the way, in the state champ game, he looked more 5'9" 175 to me but a great athlete)

So let's start a list of the great high school prospects that had to hear fans tell them they were too small to play D1 football. Shall I start with Doug Flutie who played in the NFL or just stick to BYU QBs.



Detmer was too small to play D1 football. So was John Beck. But then Beck grew a bit and Detmer managed to play bigger than he was. Any others come to mind. Or shall we talk about the sure fire big QBs - couldn't miss prospects that - missed -



Ben Olsen, Larry King's nephew, come immediately to mind. Matt Berry. There were others.



I have a really novel idea - why don't we just wait and see - on the field.



I have no idea how this will turn out - but I am happy to wait and see and show Mr. Football for the entire state of Utah - having won the award over the juvenile delinquent from Bingham that has some of you drooling - a little respect. Let's not annoint him king just yet either. Let's just wait and see.

I wholeheartedly disagree that Kuresa can't be a qb. 1st we play in a spread offense where there are plenty of passing lanes; 2nd having big, tall onlinemen means that dlinemen have trouble getting their arms up 3rd It's not like linemen are standing straight up when they play; try bending your knee 60 degrees and see how tall you are.



Riley Nelsons problem is not height, or vision....it's arm strength (making a throw and getting it there on time are two different things) AND it's not his fault he got injured and that we signed the most talented freshman QB we've had in decades.



Alex Kuresa does not have that same problem. He can wing it and his footwork and vision are superb.



plus Jake Heaps isn't particularly tall.



I'm not projecting Kuresa to win a starting job, but I do know that every team needs depth at every position and he provides just that. If he wins the job in the future, we'll know he's earned it because BYU is not going to stop recruiting top notch QB talent just because we got Kuresa.



But no doubt about it, this kid is a qb and will improve the depth of our team in the future. He's also a winner and Bronco loves a winner.

To be fair, Drew Brees is completely the exception to the rule. It is MUCH tougher to compete at higher levels as a QB when you're short. At the same time, let's give the kid a chance and see what he can do before dismissing him because he's a few inches smaller than we'd like.

Flutie proves my 20-years too late. But he also had a rocket for an arm. Kuresa doesn't. If you're going to be undersized, you better have a great arm. AK doesn't. Beck had a great arm. Berry didn't. Olsen lost whatever he may have had on his mission.



Lance Pendleton was Mr. Football as well and he was a "passing" QB too. But he didn't have the arm for D1. Drew Brees is undersized in the NFL, but he's got a great arm and great understanding of the game.



I didn't see a great arm or great understanding of the game last week (or whenever the game was) in the 4A Championship.



I'm not dismissing him because he's short. I'm dismissing him because he was a poor thrower and looked like a poor man's Riley Nelson. I was in the Nelson camp, but I had seen Riley make the throws necessary in this offense. I don't think Kuresa can make even half the throws Riley can.

I think Kuresa can make the throws Riley can. Seriously, passing is not Riley;s strength, especially more than 10 yards down field. Kuresa is equal to that.



I think BYU hopes hte kid grows 2-3 inches late. If he gets to 6'1", that worked for Max. 5'10" does make it tough for a QB though, unless you a really accurate and can run.

I think this kid can make every throw needed for BYU. The game I watched in the state playoffs, he threw the ball all over the field. I seem to remember about a 20 yard out from the far hash on a line. I don't think that arm strength will be a problem. He doesn't have Heaps arm but frankly, John beck is the only guy we have had, probably ever, that could rival Heaps arm.

Beck's arm is stronger than Jake's. Jake has a great arm for sure, but Beck has a freakin cannon. which rivals Favre, Elway, etc. BEck has the strongest arm of any BYU starting QB, with Jake and Ryan Hancock probably coming behind him.



I am just glad BYU got QB this class. I think they learned a key lesson with how mission broke for Lark and co this year. Gotta have a stable of guys to lean on.

This guy has been scouted since he was a sophmore and has been to the BYU camps several times. He's a known product and Bronco has been very good at selecting those in camp who are scholarship worthy. I have no doubt that Kuresa passed many an eyeball test between Doman, Reynolds, Anae, and Bronco. As my old handle over that the board that shall not be named stated:
