Ty Detmer for Offensive Coordinator

Norm Chow - who coached three Heisman winners - USCs QBs - Carson Palmer (2002), Matt Leinart (2004) and BYU's Ty Detmer (1990), said that of all the QBs he coached at BYU - McMahon to Steve Young to Robbie Bosco, etc. - Detmer was exactly the one he wanted. Chow stated, "He was so dadgum smart and could throw it." (The right fit makes all the difference - Ivan Maisel, ESPN, 10/6/10).



Detmer is currently the coach at St. Andrew's Episcopal high school in Austin, Texas.



He stated the importance of the QB,



"Whether it's the offense or the program or the guys around you that one key piece can be the quarterback. The offense demands that a quarterback know where each of his receivers will be. When he gets to the line, looks at the defense and recognizes its coverage, he should know before he takes the snap which receiver will be open."



"You kind of had control at the line," Detmer said. "You have control of the offense. It was something I had done in high school, real similar to it. It was easy for me to play in that offense. Now you're doing it with more talented players around you. It feels right. The team grows around you."



Geez - this sounds a lot like Jake Heaps speaking.



I think that Detmer tutoring Heaps would pay great dividends - we should inquire of his interest.

He has been an actual coach for exactly one year. He may not want to leave what he has in Texas for the busy life of a college coach.

I think the Issue with Ty is does he want to leave Texas. Not like he needs the $$$, but more a matter of where does he want to live and work. If he does want back to BYU, sign him up for the QB coach, and let Doman be the OC. I would love that combo.

If BYU could hire him, I'd be all for it. I'd prefer Detmer over Doman as offensive coordinator because I think 14 years in the NFL as a west coast offense guru is greater than 3 years fighting for an NFL roster spot and 5 years as a QB coach. No matter what happens, I'd like to see BYU return to its WCO roots, much like Stanford has.

As much as I like Doman's fire and enthusiasm, Detmer would be great. Collin Cowheard was talking about Coordinators that coach college after having coached NFL. Coaches with NFL experience make adjustments quicker. They are like a good chess player setting things up then changing quickly when situations call for it.

I believe that Detmer started coaching HS so that he could prepare himself to one day coach at BYU. That's just the feeling I got. But it may still be too early to bring him in as an OC. But I'm all for bringing him in as the QB coach sooner than later.

Why hire Detmer for OC when Chow is going to be searching for a new job this off season. Take some of that TV revenue and pay Bronco $1.5 million, offer Chow $1.0 million to come back as the OC. Fire Anae. Fire Higgins. Hire Chad Lewis to coach the Tight Ends. Hire Ben Cahoon to coach the wide receivers. Keep Logan and Rich as a graduate assistants.

I love Detmer but he seems like a laid back type of guy. I think that Doman has that intensity that Bronco has. I think he would be a better motivator then Detmer. I could be wrong since I don't know either of them personally and am just going off what I have seen of them on TV.

Chow is 64 years old and has a bad taste in is mouth from his last BYU experience.



Detmer heads & tails would be a better choice.

Let's not forget that Detmer brings instant cred for QB recruits, etc. He can tap into the TX recruiting base and find us some gems.

adding detmer is huge from a recruiting standpoint and also probably from a coaching standpoint.



on a related note, did anybody else notice that chad lewis was on the sideline at the game on saturday.

i see bronco trying to bring these guys in. it matches with their tradition and honor theme they have going and going independent.



doman lewis and detmer would be amazing from a recruiting standpoint.



They all seem like guys that are good with players as well. Not as likely to butt heads.

From what I have heard this is incorrect.

All I can say is that the rumors I hear have BYU promoting Doman, then bringing on Cahoon. No idea about Higgins, who I hear is a great recruiter for us. He could be moved to another position, like TE's. Chad Lewis is already working with the TE's in an unpaid, informal capacity when the coaches can not be present, but I know he would love on staff. The question really is does Bronco want to make changes or not. If he does, then they will probably happen after the holidays. Plus, other coaches could choose to leave, and that would open up spots to fill. I think many were surprised no one left left summer. Detmer moves the excitement needle for everyone at BYU, and if he wanted on staff and a position were open, would be hard to say no. especially if it was to be QB coach. Obviously, that is Doman's job to keep, unless he leaves or get promoted.



I think it might be worth noting who the former players Bronco has had on his coaches show this year. Lewis and Cahoon both were. Cahoon;s wife was openly petitioning for Ben to get a spot on staff at BYU. It is no secret he wants a job on staff.

Although he has little coaching experience, Detmer might be a great choice.



His physcial limitations prevented him from having a hall of fame professional career, but to coach you need the mental part, which detmer has had since high school.



Sure he seems laid back on camera now, but when he coaches he will be more like he was on the field as a player.



The key would be how well he would mesh with Bronco. Doman might be better at this, but I don't think Doman would be a better coach than Detmer.

Seconded!! At this point from what I understand of his situation, he would jump at the chance to be the OC at BYU. I'm not sure he would do the same for the QB coaching position however.

Cahoon and Detmer have both said that they'd be interested in getting into coaching at the college level in recent interviews. Cahoon could easily fill in for Higgins IMO. He already spends quite a bit of time in the offseason on campus and helping out young receivers. And I haven't heard much if anything good about Higgins as a coach or recruiter. I haven't heard anything necessarily negative either before this year but look who he has had to work with... It's not exactly like he had to do much of anything to "coach them up". This year though had definitely made me wonder how good of a coach he really is and if we might not be better moving on to a younger, more fiery former BYU guy like Cahoon.



As for Detmer, I have no intimate knowledge whatsoever about things other than he has stated in his interviews and the feelings I was left with from those, but I don't think he'd have any problem coming in as a QB coach under OC Reynolds/Doman or a combination of the both. He just doesn't strike me as a real prideful guy. I think he'd be more than willing to earn his way up the chain, especially at his alma mater and a place that offers so much to do outdoors. That was one of the reasons he committed here out of high school anyway. But ultimately, regardless of his experience in the NFL and being a tutor to some great QBs, it's just not the same as college. There have been plenty of coaches who were great at one level that couldn't translate the success to the other. And especially as laid back as he is, I just don't think he'd be able to come in and run a offense like Doman could who has been around Bronco's program since the beginning and knows the ins and outs of everything.



But I really wouldn't mind a shake up on the coaching staff to go a little younger to guys like Cahoon, Detmer and Lewis (for TEs of course). In fact I'd be stoked to see it. I'd also love to get a guy like Cam Jensen back into the fold coaching linebackers or as a GA. He'd be another huge asset IMO.

Actually Ben Cahoon has never interviewed for a coaching position at BYU. It came down to Eric Drage,Kelly Smith and Higgins. Having said that I do think Cahoon would be a great hire. As to why they chose Higgins, as I recall Bronco and Anae put together a computer based test regarding the postion. Apparently Higgins scored the highest
