BYU is currently shooting 42.5 % from the field which is good enough for 216th in the nation (216th!! :gross: ), for a basketball team ranked in the top 25 in both polls, this is beyond abysmal and it's a flaw that rebounding can only hide for so long.

'What can Rose do to fix this besides making them shoot 1000 times a day?

Did you know?

BYU is currently dead last in the MWC in field goal percentage.

This is the one flaw about the Collinsworth brothers that you cannot hide; they are abysmal shooters.

As for Emery, Jimmer, Abouo, Stephen Rogers, and Noah... they'll improve and have nights where they can't miss. (Rogers will eventually come around and be our best outside shooter next season)

The biggest problem with our fg % is that we dont' have guys that do what makes fg % high. We don't consistently shoot layups, we dont' dunk the ball and we have some guys (Collinsworths) that can't shoot at all from anywhere away from the tin.

ALSO, BYU's post players would rather turn and fall away rather than taking it strong to the hoop. Which is great if you don't want to get fouled and lower your shooting percentage.

Kyle C. is shooting quite a bit higher percentage than Abouo is.

His problem right now is the same as Rogers': He hasn't hit a single 3 yet.

The whole team only made one three-pointer against St. Mary's... yet they still won the game.

Amazing that BYU hasn't lost a game shooting like that. This is a team that knows how to win games ugly.

BYU made 5 3s against St. Marys; but comparing Rogers jump-shot to Collinsworth is a joke.

Rogers made a ridiculous amount of 3's last year for a top ranked JUCO team (off the top of myhead was 42% from 3); KC was about 20% from 3 in high school.

KC does a lot of good things, but shooting isn't one of them.

You can be a good shooter and miss shots; Jackson Emery was pretty cold up until the last 3 halfs of basketball.

JT was a great shooter that had terrible shot selection.

Rogers will get it going as will some others... but the Collinsworths need a lot of help from range before either should be taking anything early in the possesion, more than 10 feet away.

And hopefully moving toward the basket.

I must be thinking of Jimmer.

Besides, I wasn't comparing KC to Rogers, but if anyone wants to compare Abouo's shooting percentage right now to KC's, THAT'S a joke.

And why you think CC has some big problem shooting 3-pointers, I'll never know. He's a post player. Come on.

Araujo did it. That means they all should do it.

Lol. I thnk BYU fans are too used to having 4 guys at a time on the court who can rain down the 3's.

Ugh. I STILL haven't quite forgiven him for trying to be a hero jacking up a 3 with only seconds left in the Syracuse game, with a hand in his face, when the then most prolific 3-point shooter was standing unguarded not 8 feet from him. Dunno if Bigelow would've made the shot either, but MAN would it have been a higher likelihood!

KC's shooting percentage may be better than Abouo's, but that doesn't mean he can shoot. For example, compare their free-throw shooting percentages. Abouo is shooting 75% from the line and before St. Mary's was 100% from the line. KC is shooting 66% (A tad better than Plaisted shot) from the line and before St. Mariy's was shooting 40%. Good shooters typically make their free-throws.

I missed the St. Mary's game, but from the previous games I've watched seems KC gets most of his buckets on fast break lay ups, whereas Abouo gets most of his in a half-court set and usually is a mid to long range jump shot.

I've yet to see KC hit a shot beyond 8 ft from the basket. Now, he must have done it because it's showing he's now 25% from the arc. Prior to last week he was shooting 000% from the three-point line. A 2/3 player should be a much better shooter.

All in all though, the entire team is shooting very poorly as denoted by the 216th national ranking. This isn't just a KC vs Abouo thing.

Here are the shooting percentages compared to last year:

Jimmer: 2009 FG = 46%; 2009 3P = 44%

2010 FG = 49.5%; 2010 3P = 39%

Emery: 2009 FG = 49%; 2009 3P = 43%

2010 FG = 39%; 2010 3P = 34%

Abouo: 2009 FG = 47%; 2009 3P = 41%

2010 FG = 35%; 2010 3P = 27%

Noah: 2009 FG = 55%; 2009 3P = 25%

2010 FG = 48%; 2010 3P = 50%

Davies: 2009 FG = 53%; 2009 3P = 000%

2010 FG = 42%; 2010 3P = 000%

They only person that's "improved" their shooting percentage (season is still young), is Jimmer; however, his 3-point shooting is 5% lower than it was last season. Our Shooting guard (Emery) is shooting 10% less than he did last season. Abouo is a similar boat. Noah is right there with them and Davies is 11% behind what he was last season.

To top it off, the newcomers aren't filling any gaps. CC is shooting 43% but is only putting up 6 pts a game. KC may be shooting "better" than Abouo at 48%, but he's only chipping in 6 pts a game too.

For a team that's supposed to be filled with "prolific" shooters, we suck right now. Good news is, once we start clicking we'll be unstoppable; even if we play up to our 2009 averages.

CC has been hurt, and KC had been coming off of the bench.

What are their total minutes played this season compared to, say, Jimmer's?

KC isn't that far behind. CC is a different story because of the injury.

Jimmer averages 32.5 min/game and has played 195 min. KC averages 23.3 min/game (not bad for a freshman) and has tallied 140 min, which is the 4th most on the team. There should be no complaints regarding how much playing time KC is getting.

On a points/min basis here's how the top 5 players minutes wise compare.

Jimmer: 195 min; 149 pts; .76 points/min

Hartsock: 178 min; 66 pts; .37 points/min

Emery: 174 min; 77 pts; .44 points/min

KC: 140 min; 39 pts; .28 points/min

Abouo: 123 min; 45 pts; .37 points/min

And just for the fun of it, here's where Davies is at:

Davies: 96 min; 43 pts; .46 points/min

On a per min basis, Jimmer, Emery and Davies are our best scorers. Of the top 6 most played players on the team, KC is our worst scorer; yet he's 4th in total minutes. Davies, who's 2nd in scoring per minute is 6th on the depth chart minutes wise. Looks like KC is Rose's new favorite player...

I'm just glad that Emery's scoring has picked up.

He started out last season ice cold as well, before finding his shot and a rhythm, so it's not really surprising.

so after last night's game our FG% improved to 42.3% on the year. Good enough for 190th!

We went up 26 spots with last nights game.

I just don't quite understand how an undefeated team can shoot so poorly. yes I know we rebound and steal and shoot twice as much as our opponents, but it just seems contradictory.

Even lowly Utah is shooting better than us (Even if it is 185th place) and they are getting to the point where they can't even field five players before the next one walks out the door.

Incidently our next opponent, 5-1 Hawaii, is shooting 50.3% from the floor which is good enough for 14th place.

St. Mary's is currently 12th in the nation in FG% (50.5%). They shot 49% against BYU. But BYU shot 53.8% in that same game, and won. The shooting percentages will work themselves out. BYU had a couple of awful nights shooting, and still won. The shooting % I'm worried about is the FT%. No excuse for the low number there. We can't give credit to the opponent's defense there.

Amazing how that shooting % goes up the closer the ball gets to the basket. Davies was on fire, as was everyone when they got to within 8 feet of the hoop.

We're now shooting 45.7% from the field. Good enough for 87th percentile. Didn't seem like the number went up ALL that much after shooting more than 50% vs Arizona.

I'm thinking that the percentages for the rest of the country might also be coming down a bit as everyone starts playing some harder games. Because a jump from 190th before Hawaii to 87th is pretty freaking significant. Oh, and our rebounds, PPG and assists figures are stil pretty high. What a great year this is!!!
