Independence or Big 12?

If you had the choice between these 2 what would you choose?

That's a tough call for me because with BSU going to the MWC there is an opening for "ESPN Darling". And guess which team happens to be the one that ESPN just invested millions of dollars on? :love: If we go Big12 it could be both good and bad but with ESPN as our "sponser" and having such a large share of the BCS pie, I kinda like being their "darling". This all depending on whether we win a lot of games. And as for being the ND of the West, ha! people in a few years may be saying that ND is trying to become the BYU of the East. ;)

I'm leaning towards independence because but there, for the grace of Texas, goes the Big 12. This summer demonstrated that the members of the Big 12 are figuring out how to move on--Texas to independence or the Pac 10 or Big 10, Missouri to the Big 10, Texas A&M to the SEC....



I'd hate to see BYU at the mercy of all these external forces.

We are in a good position right now. If you have an option you take a bcs conference no question, but given that this is not an option at this point we are in a good place.



the 'espn darling' thing did well for byu early on and has done well for bsu lately. it will be good to us over the next few years if we can win.

The choice not shown is Big 12 for Football only. Does anyone know the terms of our agreements with ESPN and the WCC?

No brainer....Big 12

I chose Independence because of my concern about the money if BYU went to the Big 12. Texas wears the pants in that conference and they get the lion's share of the money. I would want to compare which one has more money potential.



The other great thing about independence is BYU no longer has to contend with a conference which may have the tendency to be selfish and obstructive to our mission.

Independence over Big 12 - no stability there. And its kind of fun to "go it alone".



However, if the Pac were to come calling (I know, not going to happen, just giving perspective), then they'd have to take that.

I vote for independence too. BYU would lose control of its newfound TV rights if the Big XII picked them up, and I don't think Holmoe is willing to go for that after all the time spent getting it. I think a minimum of 4-6 years of football independence is coming, and only ending if a big time conference invite comes.



Notre Dame is fat and happy with it's independence, and I think BYU can get there with ESPN.

I think that BYU passes on the PAC-12 honestly. They get paid better as an independent with ESPN than they would in the PAC-12, AQ status notwithstanding.



BYU is driving this train and has all the cards and options. I see no downside to independence for the next 8 years. Except for those snotty remarks about "independence means nobody wants you" from little brother up north. That's getting annoying.

Just quit listening to those :utard: s. But I think BYU would choose the Pac over indy - there's something to be said for stability. I know that unless they have pretty much NO other choice, that the pac wouldn't come calling for BYU. But if they did, BYU should and would accept. Big 12? Mmmmm...not unless Texas signs some multi-year deal to stick around. Otherwise, BYU and Texas could just schedule an annual November series once Texas goes indy too.

I think BYU will be in the WCC for a long time. I think they're going to enjoy their level of control of their own program.

True. But as I think about it, they might consider an fball only invite to the Big 12. No sunday play issues, keep commitments and relationships in the WCC. But, honestly, I'd rather see them have rousing success as an indy than become texas' little beeotch.

Anyone who thinks that college football restabilized last summer is kidding themselves, things are headed for MAJOR shakups in the future, as soon as Texas or USC or Florida or Oklahoma or any conference's "franchise university" decides to start 'exploring their options' everyone else in the conference will get really nervous about being the last one holding the check. With the current instability in college football I think it makes more sense than ever to go indy, especially if you have the real trump card for scheduling and TV revenue (ESPN) on your side. The only reason playing in a conference is nice is the stability and ease of scheduling, if the stability is gone, what's the point? Going indy also allows BYU to tailor its schedule to its own needs and allows for much more interesting schedules (personally I think it gets boring only playing a handful of non-con games each year).

I would love the Big 12 for both football and hoops. Great league on both fronts, and the teams coming into LES and the MC would be awesome. The venues BYU wopuld go to would be sweet as well.



Having said that, BYU has shown it can go Indy, make it financially and be just fine. I am ok either way because BYU has the muscle to make it work, and the name recognition to get games. And if we go 11-1, we have a a shot at BCS. 12-0 we are in.

I have to say independent. I say no to an annual trip to Kansas and Oklahoma. Independence allows BYU to play in a lot more stadiums. We make the schedule and we set out own rules, instead of having Texas push us around.

Being in the Big XII allows us to play in higher profile games against great teams, shoot for conference championships, and associate ourselves with tons of history and tradition. I would love a Big XII invite, but I don't think independence is a bad route, either.

I agree. The pac-12 shared their opinion on BYU. BYU has to 1-deny Christ, 2-deny the Book of Mormon 3-Rid themselves of all religious and moral values, and 4-Become Vegans.



As far as I'm concerned the pac-12 is the satan of conferences, no chance BYU goes there, but it's mutual hated relationship

I'd like B12 for football and WCC for everything else.



And for the life of me I can't figure out why people think the PAC10 is a good conference. Most teams suck. Sure they have $$ and the rose bowl but the actual competition blows.

Between being in the MWC or independent, I pick indepent. Between being in either the PAC10 or BIG12 or being independent, I pick being in one of the two conferences. I grew up on the PAC8/10 and would have loved to have seen BYU join the PAC12 instead of Colorado and if BYU gets invited to the BIG12, I hope they take it. I would rather play the dredges of the BIG12 than the dredges of the depleted WAC any day.
