Zero media coverage of the controversial replay

How is this possible?

I haven't been able to find a single article that mentions that play as anything other than a fumble.

For example Mike Sorenson from the Deseret News says

Two plays later BYU's Brandon Bradley intercepted a tipped pass from Wynn only to fumble after a hit by Kendrick Moeai, who recovered the fumble.

No mention at al that there was even a review on the play.

Dick Harmon put it this way

And that set up another incredible situation when BYU corner Brandon Bradley intercept a Jordan Wynn pass, ran about 10 steps and then fumbled it to Kendrick Moeai to set up Utah's winning Matt Asiata touchdown with 1:21 to play.

Lya Wodraska of the Salt Lake Tribune said

The Utes earned their first lead of the day on a bizarre series of plays, as Wynn was intercepted by BYU’s Brandon Bradley, who then fumbled during his return. Utah’s Kendrick Moeai recovered the ball on BYU’s 38-yard line with 5:45 remaining.

I have never really paid attention to how replays like that are covered but I find it weird that nobody even mentions that the play was reviewed, let alone how controversial the call was.

Because BYU won't complain about this call. We'll take our lumps and move on. We don't believe in crying. We believe in moving on and getting better and seeing where we can improve so awful, egregious and cheating officials aren't in a position where they can lose us a game.



This won't be a story because BYU is above it.



If this had happened to the Utes it would be all they would talk about until the bowl game because they're not. They don't/won't move on from controversy. They live on it. They need it. It's why they're still mad at Collie. It's why they won't forgive Max. They need it to feel better about themselves.



We don't need it. We'll move on. In fact, I'm already about over it. I'm not mad anymore. It happened. Let's get ready for our bowl. Bitching, moaning and crying about it won't change it. So I won't.

I get that the team won't whine about it but for the media to completely ignore it like it didn't happen seems like bad reporting to me. Like it or not that replay was a huge part of the story of this game. At least mentioning that there was a review on the play and it was controversial seems obvious. To not do so seems pretty cowardly.

Good point. For the media to not even talk about it is missing a big story. But this way, the few BYU fans who will call in and bring it up can be portrayed as whiners.

While talking to a friend on the phone last night, he was watching ESPN and the game came up so he told me that ESPN discussed the bad call and its impact on the game and how BYU was hurt because of that call.



I bet on Monday there will be plenty of discussion of it on the airwaves in SLC.

It was a bad call. If Utah had any officials in the loop (like BYU did vs SDSU) then it would become a controversial call and would garner media attention. That's what I want to know. Did Utah have alumni or officials anywhere near the video machines?



There was irrefutable video evidence that it was a bad call. Calling it controversial implies that it could have gone either way.

They discussed it on ESPN. Lou Holtz said he "didn't understand" how the replay officials didn't overturn the call.

This is a violation of the new MWC rule from the SDSU debacle.

While that call was as bad as they come, I'm not going to cry about it for two reasons: First and foremost because it does no good anyway. And a close second, because BYU had every opportunity to put that game away both before and after that bad call and couldn't do it. Let me rephrase that. It's not that they couldn't do it, it's that they didn't do it because they showed all game long that they could. Poor offensive play calling was their down fall in the second half.

It was a horrible call I want to see how the MWC handles it. My guess is that they ignore it like the incompetent hacks and losers that they are. The JJ missed fumble was bad. This was worse.



Having said that, had our D stopped them, it is a non-issue. We didn't. It is tough giving a team 3 shots to get it right. Our D stopped them 2x and made some great plays and still had to try a 3rd time. The Yewts were fortunate, our D was solid, but in the end just could not finish the deal. Crazy game. But to be honest, this will toughen this young team up and we will be better and work hard to overcome this. I see this loss doing for us what TCU's crazy lose at RES in 2008 did for them.

It was bad and in the back of my mind I do wonder if this wasn't a farewell "one-fingered salute" from the MWC but again, BYU could have easily won that game in spite of that call. They blew chance after chance to shut the pukes out earlier in the game and then they could have kept pushing on that last drive with plenty of time to go instead of "playing it safe" trying to line up a 45 yard FG.



But while I would like to know who was in the booth, especially after the rule the MWC passed that no alumni or university employees of the home team could be in the booth, I won't raise a peep about it after the crying that the Waaahztecs did and are still doing over the JJ fumble in that game. BYU and its fans should be better than that.
