Worse 4th Down Call

Which was the worse play call on a key 4th down?

I'm going Hoffman, because we weren't going to win the other game anyways.

both are pretty egregious, but I'm going with the playaction call, because we were at the 19 - in easy makeable field goal range that would have put us up two scores.



I like the idea to go for it, but in that situation just take the points. But if you are going to go for it, run the damn ball up the middle like you had been doing so well up to that point.



But, take the points in that situation.

Hoffman still dropped the pass though

a freshman passing to a freshman when you have been running up the middle at will. at least do a rollout to give jake a chance to pick up the first down with his legs if you are going to do a playaction. That call couldn't have been more poorly made, and - once again - his players almost bailed him out of it.



Anae is - simply put - a loser, and I mean that in the truest sense of the word.

Bronco needs to check the playbook and see if the QB sneak is even in it. I don't think we ran one all year. Maybe Anae doesn't have it in this year's playbook so he didn't realize it was an option.

If I remember correctly, they did run a QB sneak against NM last week for BYU's first touchdown of the game. It was pretty effective too. If they had done something like that on the 4th down play, BYU would've had the first down.

Nope, Heaps TD run vs UNM was on the option that he kept.

I sure hope that's not the case. Because then Anae wasn't looking at any playbook because he didn't have Jake throwing all the time.

The decision to go for it on 4th down instead of kick a field goal was much worse than the play call. It wasn't a bad play call for that situation. It was a really bad decision to not take a 9 point lead instead of a 6 point lead.



Of the 2 plays the toss sweep to our glorified fullback is way worse than a play action pass to a pretty wide receiver.

I don't mind play action, but was too risky when BYU only needed inches. If BYU had needed 2 yards it would have been a more reasonable call. Ultimately, the play worked (ball delivered in the gut, into coverage) but Hoffman dropped the ball.



We haven't had much luck with Kariya on the edges. He's a power middle guy. A 3rd and 2 guy.



I would have preferred a QB sneak or Fullback dive on 4th down at Utah, but then if it gets stuffed we'd just rip on Anae for being conservative.



The guy can't catch a break really.

Sorry, but if that was an "option play" then that might of been one of the worse I've ever seen. If you look back at the play Heaps was being swarmed so he just took off. I mean I guess it could of technically the play could of been called as an option, but I just doubt there's really a way to tell... unless you ask Anae himself. Unless we're just totally talking about 2 different plays...

It was clearly an option play. Heaps took the ball from center, took several steps to the right. He even hinted at tossing the ball to the RB which froze the LB allowing Jake to cut back inside.



It was clearly more of an option than a QB sneak.

Maybe you're right I just don't remember it being like that... I'd have to go back and see it, but I don't really have a way to do that.

I'll back Kitic up on this one. It was definitely an option play -- an option play that Heaps clearly had no intention of optioning to the RB on. He wanted that TD.

Look at the UNM video. The option play is at the 0:37 mark. Clearly an option.

The 4th and inches call was a good one.



How often have fans SLAMMED Anae, Bronco, etc for being too conservative and too timid? How often have the folks on THIS BOARD slammed him for being too conservative, no imagination, etc?



Now, when he shows some real creativity and cajones, and the play was there ... because the receiver couldn't hold onto the ball, fans and armchair qb's complain about the call!!!



Good grief! If Hoffman had held onto it you would talk about what a "gutsy" call it was and how it helped out ... the confidence boost to get into the endzone or get the first .... blah blah blah ....



I'll complain about the I-formation "let's lose yards" calls just prior to the last kick, but I won't complain about that 4th down call, and I'm tired of others whining about it.

I appreciated them going for it, though they should have taken the points. I like to see a team try to win the game. Playaction on 4th and inches is a stupid playcall when you are running the ball as well as they were in the first half. If you are going to do a playaction, then at least do a rollout, so the qb has a chance to get the first on the ground. It was just a bad bad bad playcall that almost got "overlooked" because it almost converted.



The story of the offense this year, and defensive playcalling pre-Bronco: Putting our kids in terrible position to succeed, and then blaming them for non-execution.

I can't knock the Utah call since I was a fan who was rooting for them to go for it there. Turns out I was wrong, but my hope was that they'd run a QB sneak.
