MWC 3rd in total RPI as of today

So far our conference has fared relatively well in the non-con - long ways to go but this bodes well for a 3-4 team invite to the dance.

OR, it could mean that BYU is in for a tough conference stretch, which I think was expected this year. Hopefully BYU wins every home game, and doesn't lose any they shouldn't on the road, and steal a few on the road. SMC was a good test, but I don't think BYU goes undefeated this year. 3-6 seed seems pretty good right now.

I'd take winning all conference home games and winning those we should = losses at sdsu and unlv with the potential surprise win . . . I want to beat unlv at their place for once. Matchup wise I think we have a better chance to beat unlv, but history wise we can't win at T&M and sdsu seems to keep the door open for us to steal one.

I like the competition we have this season in our non-c games. We need all the practice we can get against good teams to get prepared for our last conference run and for going deeper in the party. It will end up being all about match-ups as we've found the last few years, but it's going to be fun.

One comment about this South Padre Island tournament...



While I liked playing USF and St. Mary's as they were good opponents for us to go up against, let's not join in any tournament that doesn't have the championship game open on TV to the masses. I thought that just sucked, to not have been able to see the game and have to listen on the radio to a tape-delayed broadcast on KSL. I'd liked to have seen the game and I didn't know until game time, as I had been out of town on the west coast for the holiday, that it was a game that I wasn't going to be able to see on TV. I guess it's getting like FB bowl games and there are getting to be too many. Maybe there are just too many early season BB tournaments. I watch the USF game ending on BYUtv and the home I was in was hosted by a Cal fan, that hasn't seen much of BYU. He was really impressed that the game was in Texas and that there were that many BYU fans on hand. Good job down Texas way.

I was traveling, so I wasn't able to watch the games live, but I recorded them on DVR (Yes, the games were on DirecTV), and was really impressed by how well the team played agains SMC. After the struggles against SF, I was really worried about Saturday, but the team looked great. That game was an impressive showing by two good teams. I'm looking forward to being there in person for the Creighton game on Wednesday!

Yup. I watched the second half last night of the UNLV-V.Tech game. I'll tell you what, UNLV is going to be tough this year. They are fast, physical, and aggressive. They don't slouch on defense at all - they get in your face and pressure the ball. Hopefully we can handle the pressure. Starting off conference play with a win @ their house would be huge.

Realtimerpi is now predicting 3 MWC losses for BYU: @ SDSU, @ UNLV, and @ UNM.



SDSU is legit this year, but we seem to match-up with them the best. At least last year we did, when we were a completely different (3-point shooting) team.



Winning in Las Vegas is always a huge head-trip.



New Mexico looks to be a step below those two. Their best win is over 2-loss ASU, but they also got blown out by 2-loss Cal...





BYU-Utah State and BYU-St. Mary's appears to be the MWC's best 2 wins to date (though Gonzaga has the biggest name).

UNLV seems to always have good perimeter/high activity defense. Especially at T&M.



The post really needs to have a breakout game for UNLV. It would be nice to pound them inside.

It would, but it's not going to happen. The early pressure UNLV puts on the guards moves the whole offense 5 feet away from the basket. Not that our bigs are great under-the-basket players, but that will affect things. Jimmer needs to some how get past the first line of pressure, which will cause the 2nd line to collapse on him leaving down-low completely open, upon which one of the bigs needs to cut to the basket. Great game for some screens and give-and-go's.

You'd think so... maybe VTech just sucks, but every time they drove (when they were able to) to the hoop, their guards either lost the ball or failed to get it to a big guy. As the announcers said, "when you play UNLV, it feels like there are 6 defenders." I hate to speak so highly of the Rebs, but their team really did impress me.

They are 4-2, RPI of 44. Lost to #3 UNLV by 12 and #15 Kansas State by 16. Best win over #139 Oklahoma State.
