Positives

1. Jake Heaps. How can they not name him the starter for the future? Forget this open tryout stuff. TRUE FRESHMAN, in that environment, playing that solidly. I would almost say mistake free.

2. Freshmen. Mahina, Van Noy, Hoffman, Quezada, Wilson, Muehlmann, Falslev, Holt, Stout, plenty of linemen, and haven't even seen Apo and Phillips yet. Future is bright.

3. Defense. Three picks, multiple passes knocked down, solid run D, an overall great game. Bradley's fumble wasn't a fumble...but it was...but it wasn't.

4. Do you feel better about your future than Ute fans? Players, coaches (personally iffy on Anae) finances, exposure, QB situation, overall happiness in life? I can't think of one area I'm jealous.

5. Am I missing something?

Yeah, you are missing something. The sophomores and juniors that will be back, played great too! And as for next year, there are some great players coming off missions (Ian Dulan being one of them). We will miss these seniors ... They were great players, but the future is bright indeed! :crazy:

can someone write up some rules on when to rush the field? I'm guessing beating a 6-5 team, who dominated you all game, won't be on the "rush" list.

I tell you what. utah is lucky. plain and simple. we were by far the better team and jake played great today.

A couple more positives. Max Hall beat the yewts twice, and NEVER played as well as Jake did. He was poised, confident, and aside from a flukey interception, protected the ball.



Secondly, that was the LAST time we will have to hear Todd Christensen call a BYU-Utah game!!!!!! So long MTN.!!!!!!!

I have never been so ok after a loss to Utah. It was as if knowing how bright the future is compensated for the loss.



Heaps is going to be great. Bronco coaching the defense. Returning all 5 starting lineman, all of the offensive backfield, all but one of the contributing receivers and tight ends, and probably a new offensive coordinator (same or similar offense).

I think it's a lot like how Utah felt last year. They were a young team and Wynn was a freshman. Embarrassingly, we had to go to OT to beat them. This year we were the young team that had nothing to lose and the Utah beat us with pure luck, a BS call, and a little Anae. Will we be farther ahead than them in 12 months than they are today? Yeah...I think so.

You ALWAYS have open tryouts for EVERY position, you just make the decision by the end of spring ball.

I don't care how Ute fans feel about their future. I feel very excited about the future, but it is completely independent of the Ute program. I'm not a Ute, so my mood, outlook and opinions are dictated by my team and not my opponents.

thumbs up kitic. And hopefully after losing conference affiliation, this game will be seen for what it really is, just another game that BYU should consistently win.

The way I look at it, if we start 3-0 next year, we have a great shot to run it. And all 3 are winnable games. Ole Miss went 4-8--no bowl or extra practice. Texas went 5-7--no bowl or extra practice, thn hometo Utah for a revenge game. AFter that, only Oregon State and HAwaii and we look good.

1. Skill positions on offense. All returning and some real talent that will be available next season after redshirt/missions. Heaps is the #1 QB going into spring ball and should retain it coming out. DiLuiggi, Kariya, and Quezada will anchor the backfield. Our TEs can only get better after a very subpar season this year. The receivers will have a year to overcome this season and emerge with the talent of Hoffman, Apo, Jacobson....



2. The Oline, never been a real weakness at BYU, if Matt Reynolds returns, will be solid again next season.



3. Defensive line. Some real players will return and the depth will be better next year than this year.



4. Linebackers. They will be the strength of the defense next season with Pendleton and Kavienga returning.



5. Safety and Corners will likely be not as good as this season's, but not by much with Bronco directing the defense.



6. Special teams, should be solid again.



Although I think they might struggle abit with the early road games, there is no reason why they can't be competitive in all of them and with the back end being almost a repeat of this season, it could turn into a very special season. Although I predict 10-2 as of now, this team could win them all next season.

Bronco needs his offense to play as tough and aggressive as the D. I think an offseason to get that mentality in place will help. The fact is that even though I did not like the play calling the last 3 plays because it was predictable, our O-line got stuffed by the Ute interior D line. We ran 3 times up the gut and lost 3 yards on those 3 plays. That can not happen. We need our line play to get a little nastier for next year. Had we gained 4 yards instead of losing 3 on those 3 plays, who knows what happens. A different tone is set for the kick.



Regardless, the thing I am most pleased with is how far this team has come from the USU game to the Utah game. The is the main positive I see. We will be better in 2011. A lot better.

I don't see Jake Heaps losing to Utah again in his career. I'm calling it right here and now.

True dat. I just happen to live in Babylon, was at the game (almost lost my right pinky toe to the cold), and am forced to deal with Babylonians frequently. For those of us who are in the same boat, I just wanted to add a comment about how good it feels to be a Coug. (Not a down by one score, oh no crap my pants replace the sucky QB with a suckier QB Ute)

They sold their souls in 2003 when Urban came.

I agree with you guys that next year looks very bright but Texas will be really good next year, same with Ole Miss. Add Utah to that and it is tough. I could easily see us going with 2-3 losses next year. On the other hand, if we can run the table I'm not sure you can keep us out of the National Title game.

Just reading through this thread gets me so stoked for next year. I see big things. I too don't see Heaps losing again to Utah and I'm reminded right now during his announcement of his commitment that he mentioned bringing a national championship to BYU. Could happen, the likelihood of that happening in the next three years is more real to me now than ever.
