This is not nearly as in-depth as someone on ESPN might provide, but using standard box scores and a formula that my high school coach used, here's how our players have performed on a per game and per minute basis:

J. Fredette 22.00 0.77

N. Hartsock 14.00 0.57

C. Abouo 11.00 0.53

B. Davies 10.75 0.90

J. Emery 10.75 0.43

K. Collinsworth 9.00 0.42

C. Collinsworth 8.75 0.58

B. Zylstra 6.25 0.52

S. Rogers 4.75 0.49

J. Anderson 4.25 0.34

N. Martineau 3.50 0.34

L. Magnusson 3.00 0.32

Based on this, I think that the starting 5 should be Fredette, Hartsock, Abuo, Davies, and Emery with C. Collinsworth and Zylstra the first to come off the bench. My formula is Pts - missed FGs - missed FTs + Rebs + Assts - TOs + Stls + Blks. It's far from perfect, but a good starting point for analyzing how players are performing. Not included are hustle plays like delfections (not in the box score but really should be, every college/NBA coach tracks those), extra credit for offensive rebounds, and negative points for personal fouls.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't entirely look at personal fouls as a bad thing and actually think a player that finishes a game with no fouls didn't play hard enough. Sure if a player is racking up 3 fouls in the first half of the game that's an issue, but a foul here and there is no big deal and indicates to me a bit how aggressive on defense a player is.

Jimmer is playing foul-free ball right now, but part of me thinks that means he could be a bit more tight on defense. I would expect a player playing tight defense would get the occasional blocking foul called on him, especially if guarding the PG of the other team. Abouo is a good example of this. Moves his feet to stay in front of his man. Occasionally, when his guy tries to take it to the hole Abouo cuts him off and gets nailed with a blocking foul.

Updated through last game (CSU):

Player PER/G PER/MIN

Jimmer Fredette 22.6 0.67

Jackson Emery 15.6 0.50

Noah Hartsock 14.3 0.52

Brandon Davies 13.0 0.59

Kyle Collinsworth 9.6 0.37

Chris Collinsworth 9.0 0.55

Charles Abouo 7.0 0.41

Stephen Rogers 4.7 0.46

Logan Magnusson 2.9 0.28

Brock Zylstra 2.1 0.33

Nick Martineau 1.8 0.27

James Anderson 1.6 0.18

Emery has done a lot better as of late whereas Abouo is dropping off. And we really miss Chris...and Rogers should get more playing time.

And Fredette has the 13th best PER in the nation according to Hollinger:

Interesting that according to Hollinger, BYU faced the #1 and #2 PER players. And won both games relatively easily.

I agree with this, but there are good fouls, bad fouls, and stupid fouls.

Good Foul:

- Anderson sitting on top of someone trying to do a breakaway layup

- Fouling a bad FT shooter late in the game

- Hustle play lose ball fouls (diving for ball, trying to rebound etc)

- Sometimes just playing overall good aggressive defense (blocking foul trying to take charge etc)

Bad Foul:

- Going over the back anytime

- Committing a charge

- Fouling while setting screens

- Getting beat defensively and fouling to "make up for it" (either in the post, or that side step, and try and knock the ball from behind... we do both of these types quite frequently)

Stupid (or reactionary) Fouls:

- Getting pushed, so you push back (the ref always sees the second foul)

- Any type of frustration foul (didn't get a call so you punk your guy on the opposite end, etc etc)

- going for a steal after the rebound when you are a post player (see: frustation foul)

- Anything flagrant

If we committed a bunch of "good" fouls (as I term them) and we were just a bunch of hard nosed dudes like the Pistons or Celtics back in the championship era, then I will take it ALL DAY LONG and twice on sunday. But 9 out of our 10 fouls come out of poor defense, or reactionary fouls rather than just being aggressive.

so basically, we all should have just trusted Rose to make the right calls because the starters are the best players on the team.

That or the guys that are playing more minutes are getting more confidence. Probably a little of both.
