Through four games, Jimmer has yet to commit a PF.

I like the Points Available Percentage (how many points scored divided by points possible). Jimmer 52.5%

Emery 36.2%

C Collinsworth 49.0%

K Collinsworth 43.6%

Davies 66.7%

Hartsock 56.4%

Abouo 42.3%

Anderson 37.5%

We've got 43 steals.

FG% D: 35.3%

3FG% D: 26.2%

Our Field Goal percentage; however, is abysmal. 189th!! Yet, we're 8th in points scored. What's that say? We're shooting lots and missing lots, but getting our rebounds.

Crazy, I guess I don't care how they get it done, if BYU is putting 80 or more points up a night, they're going to be hard to beat.

Our FG % is that bad, huh? Wow. Well since we've played cupcakes we're actually able to rebound. I am interested to see how we do in the South Padre games--those will not be easy.

Our rebounding and defense are both looking really good right now! We have some great effort guys, even if we don't have strength and finishing ability at the hoop.

Our offensive efficiency is looking poor at the moment. We have no good 3-point shooter at the moment, aside from Fredette. Emery is ice, but he started that way last season too. Rogers is 0-7 I think. Even Jimmer is taking, and missing, too many shots.

We need Hartsock, Davies, and CC to step up our post play. These guys do have potential!

We also need Kyle to finish taking the starting job from Abouo. Charles played very poorly yesterday, making plays so boneheadedly stupid that JT would have dropped his jaw in surprise. You can't just throw the ball away over and over again. Kyle actually leads the team in steals, coming off of the bench (and I think is also high in assists and rebounds), and may eventually develop into another deep-shooting threat. Right now though, he always wants to drive to the hoop, no matter what else may be open longer...

I'm not sure the team knows what it has yet. Last year we had 3 point shooters everywhere. But this year Haws and JT have been replaced by KC and Abouo, 2 slashers who like to get to the basket but seem to feel compelled to shoot 3's. We ought to use this to our advantage and get more points in the paint. This is not last year's team and it's clear we will not shoot lights out on 3's, which is a GREAT development for the program. The sooner we get points in the paint, the closer we are to becoming a deep tourney team.

Abouo has a better outside shot than KC, no question.

I missed Tuesday's game, prior to those games Abouo was one of the better players on the court. His defense is a lot better than KC's.

KC plays very good defense. He's got great footwork and has great lateral quickness to keep iin front of people.

Another miscellany...I don't want to see Zylstra on the court again this year. His defense is atrocious.

Zylstra did get burned badly against Brian Green (usu)--who in my opinion is an anomaly. ONe of the best coming off screens and can get white hot. BUt mizzou you might be right.

Charles did not show well this last game. A little surprising. Dont know if he is getting a little demoralized losing pt to KC. On Defense, he's nuts, Very good on the boards. We will need them both.

Emery was much hotter beginning of last season from 3. dont have stats, but I would bet he's way down in %. My theory: He's been taekwanDaved--yep, too much time in the weight room--he's bulked up from last year. I noticed that on tv the other night, whereas all the other games I have seen in person and I hadn't noticed. I think he's sacrificed rhythm and accuracy for bulk.

Davies has improved his effort the last two games. He showing more, lets see if it lapses. I like the Rose took him out of the starting line-up to light a fire.

Noah has alot of bright spots. BUt seems like his shot gets blocked too often.

Seems like Jimmer was looking to pass the first game or two. He seems to have gotten back to old Jimmer and finding his own shot more than involving others.

KC does not have a good outside shot to date. BUt I love how he can dribble penetrate and dish the ball. He's like a Magic Johnson in that way. Smart, all around player. Hopefully his scoring improves thru the season. NOt too bad for a freshman.

Some of my thoughts.

Charles- seemed really depressed and lethargic. I wonder if he is dealing with some confidence issues. Missing a couple easy shots and dunks probably didn't help. KC is playing with a TON of confidence on the other hand. That's the difference I feel like between the two players at this point. Hope something/someone lights a fire under Abouo cause BYU needs him to play well.

Jimmer. He's averaging .6 more assists this year than last year, and over an assist a game more than his Sophomore year. So, he's improving, but he's no John Stockton. I don't think he will ever become a pure point guard. He's a score first, pass second type, which works out for BYU because he's so dang good at scoring.

I hope Abouo can snap out of it. I really don't get the love-fest with KC. Sure, he's got potential but Abouo rebounds and scores better than KC.

We need someone that can chip in 10 - 12 points a game to make up for the void JT left and that's not going to be KC. We also need serious help on the boards, and that's not going to be KC.

I hope Abouo can improve, but so far this is just who he is. An up-and-down player that can't be consistent or meet his potential. He has turned the ball over way too much and made too many terrible defensive mistakes so far this season, and can't finish around the hoop or shoot deep either. KC is like the old Andrei Kirilinko, where he fills up the stat sheet with assists, steals, and rebounds (no blocked shots though). This team doesn't actually need their 3 to rebound FIRST right now, as our 4 and 5 have being doing a great job there. The 3 needs to help the offense and not hurt it, which was Charles' MO in the first half of the last game before he got benched.

Abouo has been a great finisher around the basket actually. Who else goes up with any toughness besides him? He needs to throw down those dunks though and not let the overall softness of the program affect his game. I really think this team needs to utilize its new personnel better: Charles, KC, and Rogers are all slashers. 4 guys camped at the line won't work this year because they are not respectable shooters. Getting to the hoop makes all the difference for this team imo.

I feel like Mizzou is right on. Abouo can't hang his head cause he misses a dunk or a layup, happens to everyone, just play through it. Didn't Abouo have 2 threes the other night? Same as Jimmer and shot less. Like I said before, BYU needs Abouo to have good games. A little confidence boost and the guy could be amazing around the basket, he's already got a knack for boards and goes up strong (unlike our centers who decide to fade away or try the hook every chance they get).

Abouo and KC are both averaging about 20 min of play.

Here are their averages thus far:

KC: 6.0 pts 3.3 rebounds 3.3 assists 2.3 steals 0.0 blocks 1.0 turnover/game .474 FG% .400 Free-throw .000 3P%

Abouo: 8.3 pts 7.0 rebounds 0.5 assists 0.5 steals 0.3 blocks 1.0 turnover/game .357 FG% 1.000 free-throw .250 3P%

Abouo is filling a stat sheet much more than KC. Abouo is the team's leading rebounder. The bigs aren't doing their job. On a per minute basis, Abouo was the team's leading rebounder last year and he's clearly tearing it up on the boards this year. 7 boards a game! That's 2 more boards per game than any of our centers or forwards. Why on earth would you sit your team's leading rebounder? We're now 2nd in the nation in rebounds and that's largely due to Abouo. Don't ever underestimate the importance of rebounds, and who cares if it's a 3, a 2 or a 5 that's grabbing the boards.

I don't get the sentiment that Abouo is turnover prone. He's averaging one turnover a game; same as KC.

KC has yet to make a 3-pointer. A small forward should be able to make a 3.

KC's free-throw percentage at 40% is abysmal, which wouldn't be so bad if he wasn't a "slasher" type player. The guy driving to the basket needs to be able to make his free throws! Ask Jimmer. Abouo on the other hand is shooting %100 from the line.

KC hasn't gotten a single block.

Only categories KC is "out performing" Abouo on are steals, assists and FG%. Abouo is out performing him in all other categories. So, looks to me like Abouo can fill up a stat sheet better than KC can.

Rose needs to show more confidence in Abouo. This isn't Abouo needing more confidence. The kid has it. He goes up against some the world's best players every year. Abouo has confidence. What he doesn't have is a coach that believes in him.

I'm curious what the rebounds per minute look like. Davies, Hartsock, CC, and maybe Anderson all seem to be doing a better job there.

I wonder how much of Abouo's poor play doesn't make the stat sheets. He's just been killing Greg Wrubell. He seemed to have 4 turnovers in the first 10 minutes of the last game, bad passes that went out of bounds and went to the wrong team. Missed dunk attempts. That's why KC started the 2nd half.

I think the concerns expressed about Abouo are really based on the last game, where he had several unforced turnovers, and missed a bunch of easy shots, including a dunk. My take is that he had a poor game, but there's no need to over-react. He'll get his concentration back, and I think he'll be a great strength to the team this year.
C

Good dialogue gents. Thanks.

We really need Charles to be consistent. He can dominate on the boards and be very strong on D.

We also need KC. He can break down a zone and dish to the open shooter.

On a per minute basis:

Abouo: 7 boards/game; 20.8 min/game; 1 board about every 3.

Noah: 4.8 boards/game; 24.5 min/game; 1 board about every 5 min.

Davies: 5.5 boards/game; 11.1 min/game; 1 board about every 2 min.

CC: 5.3 boards/game; 15 min/game; 1 board about every 3 min.

Anderson: 3.5 boards/game; 12.5 min/game; 1 board about every 3.5 min.

Rogers: 4 boards/game; 9.8 min/game; 1 board about every 2.5 min.

Davies is the best rebounder on a per minute basis. Followed by Rogers. CC is slightly better than Abouo on a per minute basis.
