SpiffCougSo, I think we can all agree that both BYU and Utah are in different forms right now. Utah is 2-2 in their last four (with a narrow escape on the road to avoid 1-3). BYU is 4-0. BYU is so different from their 1-4 start that it's almost as if they are different teams.
Here is the current form of both teams in regards to PER over the last four games.
Wynn: 76 comp, 130 att, 852 yards, 4 INT, 4 TD, 117.51 PER, 58.5%
Utes D: 79 comp, 114 att, 1239 yards, 5 INT, 12 TD, 186.56 PER, 69.3%
Heaps: 62 comp, 101 att, 848 yards, 1 INT, 9 TD, 159.34 PER, 61.4%
BYU D: 64 comp, 119 att, 670 yards, 6 INT, 4 TD, 102.08 PER, 53.8%
Additionally here are yards per attempt and yards per completion:
Wynn: 11.21 ypc, 6.55 ypa
Utes D: 15.68 ypc, 10.87 ypa
Heaps: 13.68 ypc, 8.40 ypa
BYU D: 10.47 ypc, 5.63 ypa
Guys, you know I'm a big believer in PER, just look at my sig and you'll see how important it is. I've updated it and taken it back to 1998 even. BYU has HUGE advantage in PER and PER differential right now. If the trends hold, this game may not even be close.
The Utes passing Defense is absolutely horrendous right now. While BYU has only allowed one team to have a PER over 100, the Utes haven't held any team under 162. Remember, the magic number is 140.
If the Utes allow BYU to get to 160 in PER, they're toast. BYU's 2000-2009* record with a PER of 160 is 59-3 (.952) and we averaged 44.9 points. If the Utes don't turn things around in a big way, they're in BIG trouble.
If Wynn continues his poor throwing, they're in trouble too. BYU's 2000-2009 record when opponent's PER is 120 or worse is 14-54 (.206) and averaged 18.7 points. If he doesn't start playing better real quick, the game will be over real quick
