sandiegoblueThis post is partly a result of some good feelings from our 3 game winning streak as well as having a relatively uplifting Sunday. This post is only for those of you who want to be part of a positive solution, rather than part of the negative drama of rivalry week.
I have this thought that maybe I will reach out to some of my Ute friends this week and spread some good cheer prior to next Saturday. Maybe I will start out easy and just shoot out a pleasant email to honor our friendship.
If I really want to make a positive difference, I may bake them some cookies or a cake. I don't want to patronize them, but rather let them know this Holy War business can be more about fun and games than hate and angst.
I have no issues with friendly teasing and jokes. I like a good laugh from the red or blue perspective.
Of course, since the ideas I have shared so far are more directed toward Ute friends, this is a pretty easy way to be a good sport. The bigger challenge is to think of something sincere and nice to say or do as I walk by a fan wearing their Ute sweatshirt in Costco while I have my BYU blue on.
I want a Cougar win as much as anyone. I want the Cougars to score 60 and shutout the Utes. But I can be true BYU blue and be a little more kind in the process.
If you think I'm trying to be "holier than thou" you just don't know me or understand my message. I have had my fair share of slinging poop as a fan. I just want to grow out of that. It's never served me well or anyone around me.
So if you are someone who wants to rise up and take the high road, I salute you and thank you for your courage and example.
I would love to hear your success stories with this kind of thinking and behavior. I certainly benefit from the good around me.
If you find all of this just too churchy or cheesy, just walk away. I am not interested in hearing any negativity.
Now if someone punches me in the face or pours beer on me or steals my cell phone, I must admit that I am not quite at the point of turning the other cheek.
So outside of the ultra nasty kind of treatment from fellow Ute fans, I am seeking to be a little more friendly and tolerant this year.
