Ute psyche after SDSU win

Does the :utard: win over SDSU help us or hinder us for our game next week. Would they have been more "up" for us after a 3rd loss in a row?

I am cautiously optimistic for next week.

I would rather face a Ute team devoid of confidence after a butt whipping by SDSU.

Utah will come after Jake Heaps by stopping the run and pressuring the QB. If Jake can make precise throws, the receivers will be open and will catch precise throws.

I am cautiously optimistic the Cougs will beat the scuzz-ball Yewts. I am really looking forward to this game. I think the Y is peaking & confidence is up. All good.

I don't EXPECT a coug win. They COULD win it, but I think the odds are against them.

Some simple points stand out:

1. Heaps has never played in this game in that stadium. I doubt anything will be able to adequately prepare him. Sure he's stepping up one game at a time, but this next step requires a big-boy stretch. I just don't know if a frosh QB has got legs like that yet.

2. Utah beat San Diego even though the Aztecs put up over 550 yards of offense, most of it passing. Again, how good of a day does Heaps have to have to overcome that? Simply put, he can't do it himself--assuming he could actually do it.

3. The Utes have outscored the Y vs. common opponents.

4. Wynn is going around a second time. He'll have a slight advantage.

5. Much as I was exceedingly happy that Bronco got the job over Kyle, I have to give K-Whit due respect in rivalry games. His teams are ready and his game strategy is quite good, it's hard to believe he doesn't have an idea of what to throw at Jake.

6. BYU's running game has gotten on track, but against weaker competition. San Diego opted to go with the passing game, and only got 50 yards rushing or so. They didn't really try to run much, but is that because Utah was able to stop the run convincingly? I hope not.

On the optimistic side: BYU was able to put up 200 rushing yards on San Diego.

If they can run against the Utes, they will win. The game plan is as simple as establishing the run.

Utah didn't exactly snuff out Air Force's running game, so I have hope.

Utah's pass defense played pretty soft against a hungry Aztec team. Jake hit 10 different receivers today so if Utah gives him any room at all, he'll pick them apart.

Do the cougs have a chance? In Mr. Miagi lingo, "Hai. have GUD chance!"

I hope they win. But I don't know what will happen. It seems like they are equally matched right now.

I give BYU about a 5% chance on Saturday. 38-17 Utah.

I think the Ute psyche will be fine considering they're playing at Rice Chex. (The SDSU psyche should be the one permanently damaged; they choked that game away hardcore)

I just want our young guys to play with a ton of effort and experience the rivalry. If we win it would be the icing on another great coaching job by Bronco; if we lose it will be a valuable learning experience for this team.

I truly do not know who will prevail, but I think Utes have a lot more to lose than us, considering it's at their place and they're a fairly experienced team.

Am I the only one here who thinks it may be a good thing that Utah ISN'T coming into the rivalry game on a 3-game losing streak?

I mean, yeah, it would have been cool to have a chance to end up with as good a record, but again, I hate nothing more than depending on other teams to get what I want for my team, and we can't control what SDSU or their bowl opponent does.

The reason I think it may be a good thing is exactly BECAUSE of the Ute psyche. I get the feeling that if they went 0-3 before the rivalry game, they would feel like BYU needed to be their season-redeeming game, and they'd come out as irrationally hateful and spiteful as ever. For whatever reason, that emotion has consistently made them play better against us, and for whatever INFURIATING reason, BYU consistently underperforms under that pressure specifically.

I FIRMLY believe that for the past 6 years, we've EASILY had a better team than the U (YES, that includes '08 - that was a game they played lights out, we were playing poorly and it was STILL close, after almost a full 3 quarters, and we were moving down the field to score for the lead. Unfortunately, the propensity to play scared against the U kicked in HARD there, and we never recovered). None of the other games should have been CLOSE, and we've had overtimes and last second wins in ALL of them. We just CONSISTENTLY underperform against them, and I can't come to any other conclusion than that the reason for it is their inferiority-complex-induced HATRED. They're out for blood, and we're tight because of it. I don't know why.

Now, there will still be some of that vitriol from them this week, as there always is, but it just seems to me that their arrogance from getting a win yesterday would temper their ingrained inferiority complex. I could easily see the Ute mentality being ego-boosted overconfidence, because of a better record and delusions of next years running in the "big time"

I think I'd prefer that to "out for blood."

Does that mean you'll give me 20:1 odds on the game? If so I've got $100 that says the Cougs win. I could use another 2 grand.

5% is a bit pessimistic in my mind.

I can't ignore the fact SDSU threw for 530 yards against Utah--that bodes well for Heaps and company. Our passing game is light years ahead of our first few games. If Heaps can ignore the verbal abuse from Ute fans, he'll be ok. I don't see a Max Hall 5 interceptions day on the horizon.

SDSU didn't really try to run against Utah, so it's hard to say how BYU will do on the ground, although I expect we'll do OK, JJ, Juice and Kariya are all running really well, and hard, and getting into the endzone.

Defensively, I'm confident BYU can hold its own. We need Rich and Logan to get a couple more picks, and for our Dline to hold up. Injuries have kind of decimated our Dline this year.

If our Oline can protect Heaps, and open holes for our running game, BYU can win this game. What works in our favor is nobody expects BYU to win the game--including the Utah team, and I'm now confident we can score on Utah. I think it will be a nail-biter. If we can score more than 30 points, we can win the game.

BYU has not given up more then 35 pts to anyone, even when Hill was running the defense. I am 95% sure that utah won't get it against a Bronco Mendenhall run defense. The key to this game is BYU's offensive line, if it opens holes for the running game, we win. I don't think utah's pass defense is all that, I think that we can get yards against it. I am going to pick BYU in this game, 28 - 17.

+1. Absolutely correct!!! The Cougs have an opportunity here. I'd say - about 35-40% chance the Y upsets the Scuzz-ball Yewts.
C
Cougy_Monster
Forget about the 1st half of this season and just consider that the yewts are not as good as anyone ever thought and the Cougs are a million times better than they were to start the year.

The team that lost to utah state is dead. The team that is now unstoppable will wallop the yewts.

How is anyone predicting these 10+ point spreads? It's always a safe bet to call it close---because it's always close! It could go either way, but I'll say Cougs by 3.

Bingo. Right on. My biggest worry is losnign richardson and fuga. With them I am quite confident in our chances. Also anae needs to run the ball if its working. Utah has the edge with a more exp qb and it being at their place but byu can definitely win that game. 5 percent chance is simply a ridiculous prediction.

My massive pessimism comes from how tight and poor we play in this game even when we are significantly better. Not sure why it happens but I've seen this movie before and the ending sucks.

I see a young group that has no idea what they are getting into and the hostile environment will be nastier than they realize.

Honestly, I think the score is wrong but the outcome is not.

Agreed here---run the ball to keep it out of their hands. We will lose an offensive shootout---control time of possession. Had we done this in our last loss to Utah it wouldn't have been a loss---Harvey was averaging around 6 yards per carry and Anae opted to go away from the run. Genius.

Throw out the season records and the last 3 games for each team. This is the Holy War and all that matters is BYU wins. It will be a close game, but I think Bronco's defense will contain :utard: better than :utard:'s defense will contain BYU.

BYU by 4. 31-27.

A win on Saturday will give us 4 out of the last 5 against the Utes; I'm looking forward to it.

San Diego lost that game because as bad as Utah's defense was, theirs was worse. Both teams made the opposing QB look like an all-american Heisman winner. BYU's defense will not be soft on Utah's offense. I rarely saw Utah or SDSU blitz. I think Bronco will bring the heat more. Wynn has demonstrated that when he's pressured, he crumbles. Give him all day in the pocket and he looks like an all american. I think they stuff the run as well. Wide and Asiata will not be successful against this defense. If BYU's offensive line can protect Heaps and give him time, Heaps will produce, and will pick apart a very suspicious Utah defensive secondary.

I like BYU's chances in this game. BYU still has very little to lose, and I think they'll play loose. Utah still has everything to lose. Their pride took a huge hit the past 3 weeks with 2 blowout losses and a close sqeaker, after thinking hey were invincible. I think they play a little timid and uptight while trying to regain some of that lost national attention.

I like BYU 38-31.
