Jake Heaps not MWC's OPotW

Typical. The MWC doesn't like giving awards to freshman.

They still gave Ashworth co-offensive player of the week, for what was a record setting game. They're not gonna give two players on the same team co-offensive honors. ;)

I wish they had given it to both Heaps and Ashworth, they both deserved it.

I think each team nominates one person for every POTW spot. We nominated Ashworth, Payne and Rich.

Its all good. ashworth deserved it. Jake was good but will have plenty of time to get awards like this, hopefully. ashworth has battled back from some serious hardship in a fantastic way.

Umm... actually, after this season, he'll never have a chance to get a confernce offensive player ofthe week award... But I don't really care.

He'll have to settle for that pesky National Player of the Week award instead. ;)

On today's Cougar Tracks, the way Greg Wrubell writes it, it sounds like it's BYU's policy to submit only one name per category for the award. He could have meant it's the MWC policy that a school only submit one per category, and BYU was just following that, but GW tends to make it clear in his writing exactly what he means. Sounds like BYU COULD have nominated both, but just doesn't.


All three players BYU nominated for MWC Player of the Week honors were tabbed by the conference today. WR Luke Ashworth (offense), S Andrew Rich (defense) and PK Mitch Payne (special teams) all took home weekly citations; BYU only nominates one player per unit, so QB Jake Heaps was not up for the offensive award.

I hope some aren't taking this as some sort of slight against Jake. As good as he was, Ashworth was better. Ashworth set a MWC receiving record and tied a BYU receiving record. No BYU WR ever caught more touchdowns, but seven BYU QBs had better throwing days. Luke was fully worthy of both being nominated and receiving the conference player of the week.



It is too bad Jake won't be in a conference the rest of his career, because the MWC might have had to change the name to "MWC Offensive Player of the Week (Not Named Jake Heaps)".
