It isn't the fact that Heaps may be working hard now that rubs wrong, it is the insuation that he did not work hard previously that is the issue. It is bunk. The kid has stayed late after practice to throw with his receivers since Spring. Worked all summer and did in Fall camp as well, and into the season.
Now if you want to get after him for not flipping enough monster tires--fine--have fun withthat. But I'd rather hear about him working on routes and timing than extra time carrying cement balls, flipping tires and doing squats in season.
Never have I even insinuated that Heaps has not worked outside of "normal" practice hours. Other CC posters (maybe Craig O who tracks who said what better than I do could tell us who said it), did insinuate that during summer there was some flap about Heaps not being there "as much" as some expected in the summer. I recall a comment about him being out of town at some point when others were in town.
I do know from a very reliable source, that there has been conflict in the team due to perceived entitlement of Heaps and other super frosh - it kind of goes with the territory when you recruit "super stars".
Here is what is hilarious,
I have been excited about Jake Heaps since the first day I heard that he even existed. I am delighted that he is a Cougar. But, with any coach or player, I am a prove it on the field kind of guy. I don't buy into hype. I sure called tha tright when everyone was posting that Crowton was instantly going to replace Edwards, who had lost a step and outlived his usefulness, and take us to the next level. I said, maybe - maybe not. Why don't we just wait and see. I believe everyone deserves respect. Even Jake Heaps. And I highly respect Jake Heaps.
But he has been playing like a True Freshman - mainly because he is a True Freshman - a damned good one if last Saturday is any indicator - not so good if Wyoming is the indicator. He is already the best True Freshman to start in the history of BYU.
But that is why - you just don't start True Freshmen QBs unless circumstances force you to. And whever circumstances do force you to - you get Wyoming last year, CSU and BYU this year, or worse in most cases. Even USC dipped when they started one - even when surrounded by the best talent MONEY CAN BUY - literally.
But - sorry folks - it does make the entire team and coaching staff look bad while the inexperience factor gets dealt with over a long period of time - and it takes a long period of time.
I would proudly wear a Heaps Peeps T-Shirt and history will probalby prove me to be his most realistic fan. Hey - I was supporitng Hall when everyone was baggin on him for being imperfect last year. And I will probably be the one most vocally supporting Heaps when he is a senior and the next great Hype is on the bench looking like he has more talent.
I am a simple guy - I will fly to Provo to pick mine up. I will leave Honolulu tonight - unfortunatlely connecting through West Palm Beach Florida and hung up there all week, but arriving in SLC, a week from today. If someone wants to meet me on or around campus, I will not only wear the T-Shirt with pride, I will even pay for it. I'll even buy one for my sons. So, I will take a large, give me a medium and a small for my boys. Who wants to meet me with the shirts. I think they are great.
And I am and always have been a Heaps Peep - albeit a realistic one that wishes he had been given a chance ot red-shirt or to at least to have started with something easier than AFA and FSU on the road followed by Top 25 Nevada at home. Those are not confidence builders no matter who is calling the plays.
And when Heaps improves even further - and I think of Jim McMahon every time I see that number 9, I will join any grassroots effort to acquire The Brick Oven and rename it back to Heaps - A - Pizza - the house that Jake Built.
Go Cougs
PS - I am also a Juice Monger - albeit a realistic one and he is coming along quite nicely if I do say so myself - but forgive me for respecting JJ and Kariya and their experience - especially earlier in the year.
I am an APO Fanatic as well - just waiting to see him develop and earn it on the field of play.
I am a Van Noy boy.
I won't list them all - I love all the super frosh - just expect them to pay their dues and DEVELOP into their potential.
I heard they are all working even harder than they already were working, working even longer, and that with the recent tastes of success, are more inspired and confident. Someone even said that their hearts and souls had been re-captured.
