We recently signed a home-and-home with UCF...

Those could be some tough games. I'd be surprised if BYU wins them both.

It is UCF. They play in C-USA. Same as Tulsa. So basically, they look like a good version of Tulsa. We should win both games, even if they are a good team.

three words for you. Eastern Time Zone.

IIRC Tulsa spanked us last time we played them.

No, they beat us by 1 touchdown in a shoot out. If it hadn't been for Robert Anae's aweful play calling we would have won that game since they had no answer for our running game and if we had used our ground game to hold on to the ball instead of throw on every down, we would have kept their offense off the field that we couldn't stop.

Sorry, not a spanking. Just another game where BYU thought they could show up and win. Instead, they got outplayed all game. Tulsa was the better team that day. Anae might share part of the blame but he got 47 point on the board, too bad he can't have awful play calling like that this year. The defense was what really looked terrible. Where were the adjustments/preparation/execution that day? You don't think UCF could do the same thing? Why not? Because they are C-USA? Here's some news, BYU is 4-5 this year and playing in the MWC at the moment so not sure why conference affiliation makes a difference here. UCF has thrown an impressive record up and done it with a freshman. To me, that means that UCF is no gimmie, coupled with the fact that one of those games is going to be played in Florida and I still think BYU is lucky to win both games.

Anyway, here's my point, if BYU tries to pull that crap against UCF that they did with Tulsa they won't win both games.

The point is that had BYU payed UCF's schedule, we might be 7-2 as well, and Jake might have a slightly better PER as well. 4 of the worst D's in D1 and a non-FBS team on that list...

Tulsa is good and could most likely beat us this year if we played. Speaking of a running QB, how much of our success on defense is a result of playing QBs who aren't able to run? If Carta Samuels would have decided to tuck and run a little more we could have easily lost to Wyoming. Sounds like this kid from UCF will be difficult for us to defend.

I do not buy the running QB kills BYU argument anymore. Not one of the running QBs we have played this year has killed us with the run. Not Locker, not Kaepernick, not Samuels, not Dalton, not Ponder, not AFA's guy. Perhaps only Borel at USU gave us any trouble, and we controlled him in 2010, and that game happened to be our worst all year and the impetus for firing a coach midseason. In fact, even last year we controlled pretty much every running QB, except Ponder. I think that Bronco has it under control.
Q

Ponder, Borel, Locker, Kaepernick and Samuels converted alot of 3rd downs on us by running IIRC. Not saying they ran all over us but that it is hard for us to get running QB's off the field on 3rd down. In addition, it is not so much that the running QB has success as much as the fact that we have to key on the QB and the running backs end up having a better day because of the QB's ability...Speight from USU and Taua from NV had great games against us. I'm not saying playing pocket passers is the reason for our success, I'm just saying it plays a role. that and the fact that Wyoming and UNLV absolutely suck.

Running QB's tend to pick up a lot of 3rd downs on most teams that they play. It's a product of down and distance, defense called in those situations and the lack of pass rush/missing sacks. The longer a QB has on a pass play the farther LB's drop into coverage, thus plenty of running room once they clear the line. Kaepernick is probably the only QB that hurt the team on a regular basis this year by running, but he hurt the team worse with his passing.
L

Riley Nelson also picked up many 3rd down conversions vs. AFA and UW running, but not sure he killed them. Running QBs do convert 3rd downs. So do passing QBs. BYU is no more suscpetible to being beat by a running QB this year than any other team, and I suspect are even less susceptilbe than most, especially the last 4 games. And that is the issue--BYU now defends running QBs better because we contain and pursue them better. That was a real issue a few years ago, but I think our team speed improvement has made strides in that regard.

Totally Agree. Do not take them lightly - especially early or on the road.

We would have won that game had we played ANY defense.

Bronco took the blame for that one, and put it on his scheme, in particular. We did not have the corners and safeties to play the way he wanted to, but did anyway, and they burned us deep a lot that game. Basically, I think we finally have the talent in the secodary for Bronco to call a game on D how he wated to then because we have the athletes to do it now. The last 4 games prove it. The D lost the Tulsa game for us, but we would lose lose to them again in the same way right now--by a long shot.

Yeah, our defense was getting roasted in that game. I was watching and was in total shock. That game was a complete anomoly when compared to the way the defense played all the rest of its games. It still rings true though, if you can't stop a powerful offense with your defense, then keep it off the field. Harvey Unga was unstopable in that game, we went into half time with a lead and instead of coming out and running the ball, controlling the clock and taking 2 score lead after half time (we got the ball after half), we come out, Max Throws an interception, Tulsa scores on that possession and took the lead and we never got it back. Bad coaching, poor play calling, bad execution, we lose 55 - 47.

Tulsa did one thing that shouldn't have been allowed and I believe cost us the game. Every time BYU got the ball and started getting momentum, a Tulsa player would fake an injury. It was painfully obvious and consistent during our drives; sometimes the same player every other series.

Seriously, this isnt' soccer and that shouldn't have been allowed. The Cougs stalled on a few drives that they didn't need to and Tulsa was able to get the right guys on the field during those momentum filled drives by the Cougs.

It was downright horsesh*t what Tulsa pulled there. Nothing at all sportmanlike about that.

I don't remember the injuries but I remember that their defense was hitting late, and head hunting our guys all night as well. Sometimes, dived at our players on the ground and initiated helmet to helmet contact after they were on the ground it was really dirty. The refs never called any of that though.

byu's defense is getting quicker with the talent coming in next year and in to the future. our ability to deal with qbs that run will just get better and better.

running qbs give us trouble but then again they give everybody trouble.

I remember that very clearly. Tulsa must have had 20 different times were players "cramped". I also recall thinking it was a bunch of horse manure.
