My one gripe

BYU played great. Heaps was the best he's ever been and produced an extremely effective and efficient and exciting game. But I have one gripe. Heaps is a struggling QB and needs all the confidence he can get. I think he gained a lot yesterday, but I think he could have had even more.

Quezada had a 4-yard TD run. Kariya had 2-yard TD run. JJ had a 1-yard TD run. I'm glad BYU scored, but I think Anae and the offense missed three great opportunities to get Heaps some more confidence. I think Heaps' confidence could have been even higher if he had thrown 5 TD instead of 2.

IF, he had throw those three TDs, his rating could have been nearly 188.

I wouldn't mind if they had kept him in another series, it was clear to me that UNLV was not going to let themselves go out without a TD, and that kind of angered me as Bronco was trying to be classy and it doesn't really matter, so nevermind. Just win the next 3 games.

If Heaps had gotten 5 TDs he might have gone right back to thinking he doesn't need to work hard in practice. I would rather have him thinking "if I keep working even harder, I could do this well maybe even on the road bs a weak depleted opponent"

And I am glad Heaps did not play one more series- if Heaps took a helmet to helmet or got his leg rolled over or even had his own OL step on his foot or broke his ard fighting to recover a fumbled snap - how stupid would that have been.

I do wish Bronco had let Lark throw a few more times to keep UW offense on the sidelines and to develop as a back-up.

I hope Heaps at CSU produces another game where the young players can gain experience while starters rest and avoid injury.

Wouldn't it be nice to go into RES at 6-5 healthy?

I don't understand why you said "he might have gone back to thinking he doesn't need to work hard

in practice." Have you seen at practices? Where have you heard he is lazy? More confidence is what

he needs now.

I have seen several comments going clear back to Spring that Bronco had his hands full trying to get talented newbies, including Heaps, to "understand the culture".

Some have tried to skate through classes, some, including Heaps were perceived to slack off a bit through summer.

Part of the work is looking at film and working with teammates outside of formal practice - ie preparing for practice.

Even recent Bronco comments hinted that Heaps and others are working harder the last two weeks.

Again, the TEs were barely used. That was my main gripe.

Well, Marcus Matthews did manage to lacerate his spleen.

+1 No kidding - the whole season - game after game. I'm starting to believe it's not so much a matter of "lack of experience" (as I did at the beginning of the season) as it is "Offensive Scheming" by Anae. It's just the way he chooses to run the offense & I don't get the point of not using the talented TE pool. Go figure.

Didn't we try this vs SDSU and instead of going up 21-0 we threw an interception which allowed SDSU to get back in the game? No, you run the ball and score, especially if they can't stop it. Heaps still got 2 td passes. His confidence is where it should be right now. It needs to continue to build by going out and having a solid performance against CSU.

Legit gripe. Having said that, is it because Heaps is feeling more comfortable throwing to the more experienced wide recievers, or is it because Anae is not calling plays for them? I don't think we will ever know what is really going on behind the scenes.

I think Mars is spot on. Only thing to really go after is the lack of TE production. It has been a theme all year long, and at this point it means that either this group is way waorse than we all thought or they are not being utilized too well. I think it is partially both.

When Beck and Hall got inside the 20, the go to guys were the TE's. Not so this year. I think part of is that the TE's still have not figured out how to read a zone defense and find the seams, and part is they are not separating. Part might be Jake looks outside more. And part might be Anae is not calling many plays for them yet.

Yes, but Heaps was playing better than he was versus SDSU. Simply scoring is a sound decision, especially based on previous unsuccessful attempts to throw deep in the redzone.

EXACTLY! You don't call plays for stats. You call plays to win games. Get the TD on 1st and goal from the 3. Do not throw the ball just because you want the quarterback to get a passing TD. I forget who was quoted for this: "When you pass there are three possible outcomes and two of them are bad". Freshman quarterback in the red zone should call for more running plays.

Which play gives Heaps more confidence: TD to Hoffman or TD to Ashworth? Both were for the same amount of yards. One the wide receiver did a lot more of the work. Does throwing a 3 yard TD pass give your quarterback any more confidence than throwing a five yard pass to Ashworth and seeing him run 40 yards in for the score? I think Heaps gets confidence from not throwing interceptions, having the receivers catch the ball, and winning games.

Bronco said they spent a lot of the last two weeks just working on pitch and catches and throwing the ball. It definitely showed this game. BIG time.

There were a few drops that would have been "great catches" given the tight coverage, but at LEAST the wide open ones were caught unlike the first half of the year. And yes, I DO think a 3 yard pass followed by a 27 yard run helps a qb as much as a 30 yard catch since at the end of the day, everyone asks him about throwing 2 TD's instead of 0. I would have liked some more passing TD's, but it's hard to argue against guaranteed points with the running game.

my main gripe was with the long bomb Jacobsen gave up on. Did everyone forget about that one? It was a near perfectly thrown pass and Jacobsen didn't even dive for it. On the replay it almost looked like it went through his hands.

I did not get to actually watch the game on TV, had to listen to it on the radio so I didn't see the pass in question. Having said that, if it was a perfectly thrown ball, why would the reciever need to lay out to get to it? IMO a perfectly thrown ball would fall into the recievers hands in stride, if you have to lay out for it, it is over thrown. Now, if it is within his ability to lay out for it and catch the ball, then he should try, but when I think of "Perfect" I don't think of recievers laying out for the ball.

This explains everything, you have been - and are - commenting on things that you haven't actually seen. That makes sense...

So how do you know that "Jake actually started throwing a catchable ball" like you have stated in another thread?

And by the way, what you are commenting on here, you have no idea what you are talking about. It was perfectly catchable, Jacobsen didn't even put his hand out, which is all he would have needed to do to catch it.
