Also interesting--Utah's SOS before the dismantling by TCU was 73 (you know, when they were undefeated).



After TCU, they moved up 57 places to #16 SOS. TCU jumped 44 spots to #17 SOS.



Depending on how badly the human polls (that factor in scoring margin) punish Utah, the computers (that don't all factor scoring margin) could actually move Utah UP on the basis of the SOS change alone!

Sagarin is only one of the computer ranking systems used in the BCS formula, and he's the wild-card (although Hester uses a similar SOS formula)--four other models all use the SOS model reflected by teamrankings.com.

Just what the doctor ordered. If you're not going to compete for a BCS game, you might as well win the battle of perception by having a palatable w-l record.



I personally think that had we played a few of these cupcakes early and left afa, usu, and nevada for later (obviously usu is a set date and wasn't really moving) that team confidence would have been better and there may have actually been a shot at a 10 win season. However, it took the USU game to motivate Bronco to fire Hill and fix the defense and it snowballed from there.

I'm not sure at the end of the day if it wasn't the hardships of this season that will allow us to spread our wings in the next few seasons.



The O has shined for a total of 3 quarters but the D has shined for 5 straight weeks (I include TCU because I think the defense was great that day and had the offense managed to hold the ball at all it would have been an impressive outcome).



I'm baffled by the lack of heart, effort, and toughness that we showed at the onset of the season, but at the end of the day I think it came down to leadership and experience. We had to be coached up because we didn't have the leaders to let Hill and Anae gameplan in a vaccuum. And I think more than anything we've found that Hill and Anae are Xs and Os guys and that simply is not enough to produce wins without a field general willing to take his team to task; something Bronco has quite admirably done recently.



I don't think we'll see the same Cougar team start the 2011 team with our tough schedule like we did this year; it starts at the top and as always Bronco rarely makes the same mistake twice.

I'm in complete agreement. I do wonder what the season would have been like had Bronco been in charge of the D the whole time. I know he had trust in Hill and Hill had earned it prior to this season, but even with early games against Nev and AFA, the outcome would have been much different. AFA doesn't run wild over our team, as evident in BYU now yielding less than 70 yards/game since Bronco fired Hill. Nevada does not come into LES and beat a Bronco led team. And the score in the USU game would have been reversed. I doubt Bronco would have beaten FSU on the road, but it would have been a much closer game than it was. This team could be 7-2 right now IF....



Based on the improvement, I give :utard: only a field goal's chance of winning when BYU rolls into play. Bronco will have the team ready for their road game against CSU and UNM will be a nice scrimmage for the team to prepare to play the SNOT. I see another 400+ yard offensive output with 4+ TDs per game against CSu and UNM. If the D can hold :utard: under 17, I predict BYU wins. What a way to finish the season, from what looked like the worst BYU team in decades to pulling out a 2d place MWC finish behind arguably the best team in the country.
