Two new items about our offense

I heard from a good source this evening that Jake was told either before or early on in the season that they were not going to open up the offense all of the way until after the bye week. I understand the thought behind this, but find it a bit shocking and probably a bad idea, given the results.



Also heard from a slightly less reliable source that Doman had a lot more input and may have even called the plays. I can't verify this, however, but if it is not true, I'd like to see him get a crack at it in preparation for next year.

Next year let's schedule Wyoming and UNLV and CSU and NM in weeks 1 thru 4 and open the playbook in week 1.



I knew the posts that assume we could have done this in week 1 or week 4 were going to start coming. Battered UNLV playing walkons due to injuries at our house is not a fresh AFA or a fresh FSU on the road or even Nevada. Not even a fresh USU on the road. Pass protection was non-existant in 3 of those games and running was ineffecttive as well.



And it was not some Brandon Doman play calling magic that made this happen. I have heard Bronco mention several times this season that the coaches are discussing the plays and what to call and why on the headsets every week. The reason there is less whining about the play calling is that the plays worked. A few more dropped passes due to inaaccurate throws and people would be wondering why we went away from the run - remember Anae was supposed to run from the i 60% of the time to protect Heaps and we were all gong to be happy if that worked and we worried that Anae would go away from the game plan. Well he went away from that plan - but it worked and we are all happy.

This was Heaps most consistent game for throwing the ball accurately and the receivers most consistent outing for catching the ball. Imagine that - Heaps throws the ball where it is supposed to be more cnosistently and the receivers catch the ball more consistently.



I also heard Wrubell on the post game comment that Heaps still put a little too much mustart on some passes and that they were very hard to catch. He credited Jacobsen with a great catch on one of those.



I see positives in all of that. Heaps is going to get even more accurate with experience adn especially against weak defenses and will improve hs touch as well - and the receivers will become even more constent in catching th epasses. It actually does help if the ball comes to where it is supposed to come and when it is supposed to get there and with the right touch. It can't help but improve completion %.



I saw some of those supposedly slow, white, heartless, lazy, lost a step white guys get some nice YAC - especially the Ashworth TD.



Lot's of positives - plenty of thigns to keep improving.



Rather than wishing we could have AFA again, or USU for that matter, or Nevada, all games that irk the faithful, let's see if we can win a road game against CSU before we worrry about getting any of those back.



ANd hey - maybe New Mexico is improving. THey won. CSU is neck and neck with SDSU at SDSU right now.



I am sure glad they are playing on the road and late - they probably won't get any practice in on Sunday either.

Lots of stuff here I agree with. We did try and run before, and couldn't. we did try protect heaps, and even if he did hold the ball WAY too long, protection could have been better and today we actually had a RECEIVER leading the team in RECEPTIONS. amazing. Anae went away from the game plan, but we could still almost score at will, and this anemic, terrible, awful, offense that can't get a first down against TCU, earned us 55 points today.



At least we played TCU better than the FrUtes. And perhaps the call by committee rumor is the way to go, but it also might be early still to be calling for Anae's head.

Agreed, especially after considering the long row he was asked to hoe this year.

Has Anae ever called a great game against a great team? I don't think anyone questions whether his system can work against teams like UNLV. The concern is that the great teams we play seem to have Anae all figured out.



The down side to finishing this year strong is that Anae will then stick around and we'll continue to win a lot of games and always lose to the 1 or 2 best teams on our schedule. I don't think he can coach our offense to a bcs game.

No he hasn't. And lately he has been calling poor games against bad teams. We should not have lost to USU and the game vs. Wyoming (you know, the team that lost to UNM yesterday) should not have been close.

Most "great teams" have a great defense. And very rare is the case where a great game is called versus a great defense. Ask the 2010 Utes how they fared vs a great TCU team. Ask the 2007 Patriots how good of a game their offense called against the Giants in the Super Bowl. Ask the great Colts' offenses in the mid 2000s how hard it is to play against a great defense.



Great defense trumps great offense.
