YzzazzI am pleased to have evidence that my remarks last week may have proved premature. But I reserve my opinion still. That means crow is cooking up aside a humble pie in the oven. I'll be happy to partake assuming a handy win at CSU.
Here's is what is different for me this week:
1. Jake Heaps proved he can throw on third and long and have it amount to something.
2. Heaps proved he can throw a missle that Ashworth or Jacobsen can actually catch.
3. Heaps proved he can put up numbers worthy of his predecessors.
4. Bronco proved he knows how to coach a defense.
5. Lark got time, showed what little smarts he could by audible-calling a Josh Quezada running play that got a first down and let to the final score made. His throw wasn't too bad--but clearly, he's not going to make anyone rethink Heaps as starter this year--or next for that matter--at least not unless something drastic happens in the final games.
6. Heaps actually shows sufficient promise to build on.
Here is what is NOT different for me this week:
1. UNLV is still profoundly bad this year.
2. BYU has yet to be tested by talent
3. Heaps doesn't handle pressure so well yet.
4. The running game plays a huge factor in BYU's success right now.
5. The CSU road game might make us forget Heaps performance this week and remind us that he is a true freshman.
CSU is not a great team, but it is a road game and they smell blood and are sensing an opportunity.
If Jake shows anything like what he showed today, then the rams will be no trouble. And regardless of the outcome of the Utah game I will feel upbeat about next year's prospects.
But a loss across the rockies, and my fears return. This team should not lose to CSU and if it does, then something is wrong that won't be easy to fix.
