Bronco gave up on the Team Leadership Council this season?

" A few years ago, coach Bronco Mendenhall started up a leadership council when players such as John Beck and Cameron Jensen were around. But he said the makeup of this year's team has caused him to shelve that system, for the time being. "It is not nearly as active," he said. "It is comprised only of our seniors at this point. Rather than delegating more this year, it kind of started that way, but I have assumed a lot more of the majority of those decisions, based on this team. " "

So... officially, the head coach has stated that his starting quarterback is not to be one of the team leaders this season? And that the seniors and upperclassmen aren't good enough, smart enough, or hard-working enough to lead the team either?

Some upperclass offensive "leaders" (or non-leaders) mentioned in the article are Matt Reynolds, Riley Nelson, Jason Speredon, and Luke Ashworth.

I would have to agree, who on the offense could even be classified as a leader this year? I can't think of a single one. No point in having a leadership council without leaders.

If you read the article carefully, which I did earlier in the day and still vividly remember - and this will irk some, especially if they want to take things out of context to try to make a point that does not follow from what was really said and the context in which it was said -

Riley Nelson was indicated as the one who might have shown the best leadership but that it is impossible to be an on-the-field leader when you are standing on the sidelines recovering from surgery. Perhaps a conclusion that could be drawn from what was actually said, is that Nelson's on-the-field leadership is why Riley Nelson was on-the-field until his injury worsened.

One could also readily conclude that the less experienced players this year are not stepping up as well as has been the case in the past as leaders.

My prediction: When the Leadership Council is reinstated - Kyle Van Noy will be on it if he is still in school. That is one freshman, apparently matured by the extra year he took to get in school, that is showing leadership on-the-field where it is needed imho.

I hate to say it, but I have made, as have others, multiple references to the lack of team leadership.

This does not come as a surprise and is just a further indictment of Bronco's lack of awareness and leadership for at least the first half of this season AND why the need for his reassertion of the much needed and now, "better late than never" engaged leadership on this team. SO, who has "IT"--that intangible of leadership or who could of had IT or should've had IT.

Riley Nelson--had a shot at having "IT and showed some of IT--AND certainly should've had IT"--and this should not be a surprise either since Bronco made several references to this back in spring and what would define the selection of a qb; And in AFA was attempting to SHOW IT by taking over the offense with his biggest assest--his legs, because, to his credit, the offense (and maybe the whole team) was giving up--got to give Riley credit, even if he was drop, look once and run; AND btw, IMO, how the team just seemed so unmotivated behind Heaps--

--SO, Heaps. Whether he has IT or not, at least in latency form, remains to be seen. But IT has to be earned on the field. And whatever happened in the summer workouts and we know of some of the problems with that, whether showing up late (for whatever reason) or the older players setting themselves aside form the newbies; AND then Jake, attempting to show IT, forming his own little "band of baby brothers"--(not appreciated by the older brothers) along with probably other true fresh who were also not invited or welcomed to join the more "experienced"/"im-afraid-to-lose-my seniority-even-though-I-know-the-new-guy-is-more-athletic-and-talented-than-me" crowd.

Hopefully he finds IT, Earns IT, and is GRANTED "IT" BY THE ALMIGHTY POWERS THAT BE "IT", and in whose rightful hands IT now belongs--namely BRonco.

Matt Reynolds--hate to say it again--never had IT; was granted IT, didnt show up with IT, needed to step up to IT and, is probably a very very nice kid, with super talent but seems to be disgusted by IT; AND why Speredon, IMO, has shown more of IT even though he wasnt granted IT.

JJ-seems to have showed IT more than anyone else. BY his play and by his support of the system and "having paid his dues". probably should have been granted more of IT (named as an additional captain), and wasnt. Bronco didnt want to give IT to JJ and leave out KAriya? Probably should have given IT to both.

AGAIN, I harp--but to have only TWO CAPTAINS. And why? bc no one has stepped out and earned IT?????

Give it to TWO players in addition to Matt and Andrew, who earned it each week with their play. Dont just totally delegate IT, ignore IT, and refuse to encourage IT. IT has looked lame ever game. IT is lame every game and is a wierd manifestation and symbolic team proclamation (by Bronco) of how entrenched thinking can make matters worse. Get some additional and/or new fricken captains, Bronco!!!!!

Receivers--Really??? Forget IT!! Very very unfortunate, McKay shoulda, coulda, woulda. What has happened to that guy? Or Ashworth. ?????

DEFENSE

Andrew--has IT; shows IT with his play, not sure how vocal he is with the team or how much Hill let him use IT. ONLY absolute guy truly worthy of being a captain--oh wait I excoriated that approach already.

Pendleton--has "it" athletically, maybe too much of a headcase to have IT/leadership given to him; + injury.

#So'Oto--seems to have IT in from what I have seen (e.g., FSU a year ago when everyone else had quit; and in other games this year). Dont know why he doesnt have IT more. Again, player development--leadership development--IT doesnt happen automatically Bronco.....because.....

....HILL didnt have IT. And whatever he was granted, had lost IT a long time ago. So, Bronco having delegated IT fully last year, IT was not being developed; and IT left with the Sr's from last year....

...ANAE--ughh. NOt enough of IT to motivate a pack of ANTS. But, in good LAvell Edwards style of coaching by delegation, Bronco, gave IT to him and wiped his hands stating "he knows nothing about [IT] offense."

Bronco. HAS IT NOW, thank goodness; always had IT since being DC; is amazing at IT most of the time, till he fully delegated IT last year and expected the LEadership COuncil and his fully delegated OC and DC to exhibit IT, develop IT (sorry, cant develop IT in others when you cant smell IT from two inches away). Sorry to sound like a whiny little kid, but I really think Bronco just turned his back on this part of the program and IT; AND the lack of IT has shown up in gross and maybe even unpredictable proportions. BUt of course he has had the factory of IT going for the last 5 years and there was just such a dearth of IT this year.

No wonder THE poster this year showed all the Sr's. Good attempt. Too big of a void to be filled. Sort of a 2 quarterbacks = 0 quarterbacks? All Sr leaders = no leaders (at least on offense).

Sorry Bib. HAve to disagree. KVN, can barely make it in the classroom. He has "it" athletically; but as we see with Pendleton, Leaders have to be more than athletically gifted. Who has IT on the defense other than RIch? Maybe Ogletree. We all sense IT. The team has to as well. He is like a Cameron Jenson, in that way. He's like "the general" out there.

I've believed for years that Bronco has vastly overestimated the level of player leadership on his teams. I think the struggle against TCU, Utah, Arizona and Florida St show this. Bronco is finally getting back involved with the team.

What needs to happen this offseason is that he needs to get involved with the offense and make it a part of his team and not a separate entity run by assitants.

I compare this to a missionary model. Bronco is the Mission President, and it is his job to set the tone. He then delgates to his AP's who follow chain of command to the ZL's, then DL's. But the key is that the Mission President is the clear leader of the team. He sets the tone. I'd say the coaches are the ZL's, and they need to follow the tone of the President. The Player Council are the DL's. In Bronco's past model, not sure it worked that way. If the DL's do not get it done, the Pres and ZL's can still do it. But you need an active hands on strong President, or else guys will slack and push boundaries. Human nature. So I am glad to see Bronco get more hands on, because he is great in that role. Guys want to follow him.

And it really shows. Not having leaders in when council takes a group and makes leaders. Ws and Ls may be indirectly related, but performance is directly related to some degree to TLC

That is why I said if he is still with the team. It won't be this year. What I like about Van Noy is that his mouth doesn't seem to run so much, but he makes plays and that can be infectious.

Agreed. Part of this is allowing past teams to think they were better than they really were after big wins. Maybe we saw that this summer after the destruction of Oregon State as well.

I wasn't a big fan of the team leadership council and I think it wise of Bronco to pull it back for now.

His best players aren't Senior RMs. His team is relatively young and rather than try to fit a square peg through a round hole Bronco recognizes that and is adapting accordingly. Coaches are paid to coach and make the decisions. Yes, it's great when you have players like Beck, Hall, etc. that know the game so well and you can rely on them to make correct decisions, but that isn't necessarily the case this year and those past "leaders" still made plenty of mistakes that we all bemoaned and wished Bronco had gotten involved in.

I don't think it's a lack of team leadership; you have kids that just are starting to become the leaders. Let them prove it on the field, gain the respect of the other players and then the other players will follow them.

A missionary right out of the MTC isn't made a zone leader, despite how natural a leader he is.

Painful to admit you were right - but IT was reinstated this year and I don't think KVN was on it. But then it was clarified, as your post last season missed and quite frankly I didn't know - peer voting is part of the process for selecting leaders - not just Bronco.

2009 leadership was gutted by graduation to such an extent, that players could not fill the void and Bronco should have stepped in as he did. One might suggest sooner as you did, but the players might not have been ready and humble enough sooner.

To take this back to mission organization, it would be very interesting to have peer voting influence who became the DLs...

I believe that this comes in part with Bronco's philosophy that "football comes fifth." When you are teaching young men to be real leaders, there are going to be growing pains and failures along the way. We won't ever like it as fans, it may hurt our W-L record some years, but I think the guys who get the opportunity to play the role will gain a lot from it. My $0.02

I think the source of this IT problem probably stems from this giant influx of young talent. You expect your juniors and seniors to be your leaders, but when you can't start them because the quiet, younger guys behind them are simply so much better than them? Yeah. Tough spot. Hopefully as our recruiting starts to level out at a higher plateau we will have talent running through our team at every level and we won't have our younger guys making our older guys look so bad anymore.

All seniors this year. All guys who have been around and know what Bronco expects. It is as much a seniority, set the tone position for the rest as much as anything. It is not a who are the true leaders on this team. It might have been once, but not last ear or this. But it will still work for organizing summer workouts. All that matters at this point.
