I would schedule any of them for a 1 and done in Provo now or in the future. I might do 2 for 1 deals with most of them. I might do a Home and Away with BSU or TCU or even AFA as long as it didn't fall into a year already overloaded with tough opponents.
My main issues with the MWC are largely the TV contract and pathetic revenue and exposure that resulted.
Granted, Utah, Wyoming, and sometimes other fan bases were pretty obnoxious and even lewd and crude. Some of that, though, seems to go with any rivalry. UH certainly hated BYU back in the day. A big part of the BYU hatred is due to our success - some of it is anti-Mormon based. And most of our conference opponents considered us to be one of their main rivals if not their main rival. So think of it as a disrespectful way of showing their respect and envy - but that the envy just sort of overrides the respect part.
Well - virtually the entire PAC 10 just gave us the finger, largely for being Mormon (narrow philosophy, Sunday Play, etc.) The Big 12 seems to have done the same thing at least for now. Maybe we should refuse to play them. The MWC accommodated our Mormonness and back in the day - so did the WAC. Nobody else wanted to. BCS powers in general have refused to play BYU unless we give them some advantage like 2 for 1, 1 and done, neutral field that ain't neutral, etc., and their refs don't seem any more Mormon friendly than MWC and WAC refs have been.
But we can't afford to snub anyone. We will be best off if our team plays at home more than away, never travels very far, and has a substantial number of very winnable games including several virtual gimmes each year. In that regard, we live in the land of plenty. Use it to our advantage. Utah and BSU and TCU do. Donât take the bait. Bronco's stmt about taking the team to the fans wherever they may be scares the crap out of me. I have seen this team show up jet-lagged once too often and take until the 2nd half to wake up. Throw in altitude differences, temperature, weather, long flights and bus rides, hostile crowds in unfamiliar settings, heat, humidity, air thickness (Maybe that is what is throwing off Heaps - misses that soggy, heavy, Seattle air), time zones, time of day, night vs day games, officiating crew differences and biases, etc., and how much variability do you want the team to endure. Most coaches prefer to tee it up at noon on Saturday every week at home or someplace nearby and then let the players determine the outcome of the game - not these factors.
So I don't have much anti MWC venom going forward. It is not like they kicked us out. Yes - they did scheme with FSU and UNR to foil the deal we had schemed with the the WAC. Stuff happens. They didn't scheme any more than we did and I would have done the same thing they did if in their shoes.
But some of these stadiums are hard to get to - a travel burden in cost and wear and tear on players. So bring em to Provo. Let's get smart. SEC smart.
