Not sure if it is completely factual or if comparisons can even exist given such a time difference. Also I am posting from my phone so I hope the link works.

He does mention that Washington didn't win the PAC-10.

He does not mention that:

-BYU was ranked #1 BEFORE they won their bowl game.

-Washington turned down the chance to play BYU in a bowl.

-BYU trounced Washington the next season.

-Michigan, who dealt with many injuries, was ranked #1 earlier that season.

-Michigan also beat a team ranked #1 earlier that season.

-BYU beat Michigan even though our QB was forced to play with a dislocated shoulder.

And that no one beat anyone that beat BYU that year and BYU beat someone, who beat someone else, who beat everyone that year.

I find it hard to believe that a national championship team would be compared to a team that may lose against Hawaii this weekend.

If BSU wins the national championship this year, then maybe we can start comparing. Until then, BYU's 1984 team is the best non-AQ team ever. End of story.

Hard to compare teams from different eras. The most interesting thing the article states is that BSU's conference road is much tougher this year than the 1984 WAC slate.

The following teams would beat BYU 1984:

BSU 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009, and 2010.

BYU 1996, 2001, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009.

Hawaii 2001, 2006, 2007, and 2010.

TCU 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, and 2010.

Utah 2003, 2004, 2008, and 2010.

The speed of the game this decade is completely different. Doesn't take anything away from 1984, it just is what it is.

He states (with no support) that BSU's WAC is better now than it was in 1984. I disagree. In 1984, like today the WAC had 9 teams. In 1984 5 of the 9 teams would be bowl eligible by today's standards. The WAC may have 5 teams bowling this year. in 1984 the WAC had 5 teams witha positive point differental, they currently have the same this year (although some of the teams with a positive point differential are close, and have not yet played BSU) I'd say, looking on paper, you cannot simply conclude that the WAC is better now than it was then. I disagree with that conclusion based on my brief analsys of it, I'm inclined to state that the opposite is true.

But be that as it may, is he really saying that because Nevada is better today than Hawai'i was in 1984, BSU is a better team now than BYU was in '84?

Shall we just take your word for it then?

Or, perhaps I'll get my DeLorean out and we can take them back to see...

What we are comparing is BSU vis a vis all of the rest of the 2010 teams and BYU vis a vis all of the rest of the 1984 teams. Anything else is stupid. BYU was the best team in 1984, and I think BSU may very well be the best team in 2010; unfortunately BSU may not have a chance to show it. But what you are doing up there with listing the teams that you have been gifted with the 'knowledge" to ascertain would beat the 1984 BYU team is crazy!

This year's TCU team would beat the 1910 TCU team. Should we rename the Davey O'Brein trophy the Andy Dalton Trophy?

I totally agree with this. Anybody who dusts off old film from the mid 90's or before and compares it to today will see the obvious increases in size, strength and speed since that era. There is a good reason why they aren't wearing the old "leatherhead" helmets from the early days anymore, right?!

There have been some significant changes in training emphasis and technology (and the technology of performance enhancing drugs and disguises for them ;) ) as well as societal emphasis on competitive athletics from a young age. Growing up in Virginia and Arizona, little league football teams were not ubiquitous like they are now. Neither my junior high in Arizona nor the one I would have attended in Virginia had school sponsored football teams. That would be blasphemous now. Back then, baseball was America's pastime, and everyone played little league. The NFL has definitely overtaken the MLB in popularity, and there is a much greater football "farm system" in place now than there was then.

Just as germaine to the topic is the issue of NCAA scholarship limits. When BYU won in 1984, the big-name programs were stockpiling all the best players because there was no limit to the number of scholarships they could offer. IIRC that changed in 1991, and since then, apart from the creation of cartels like the BCS to maintain a competitive advantage through media advertising, there has been more parity in the NCAA. I'm sorry, but I don't think BSU would have successfully made the jump to the FBS if there were still no limits on scholarships. In general, I think there would be a lot fewer programs if the big boys could still have 120 scholarship athletes.

There will always be "haters" who trash-talk about how BYU was undeserving of the title in 1984, but there is no asterisk, nor should there be. That was a remarkable team, and the only undefeated one at the end of the year. I don't mean any disrespect to a very good BSU team this year because they definitely deserve a shot to prove it on the field, and if I were a fan of theirs, I would be livid about all the teams that keep leapfrogging them. That said, you can't compare 1984 BYU to 2010 BSU until the Broncos have a trophy and a ring.

This is just an interesting article, entertaining at best. You can't compare eras, could BYU 84 beat BSU 10? Don't know, don't care. Was Michael better than Kobe or Lebron? Who knows, no one ever will. Kobe is probably the best today and Michael was the best back then, other than entertainment value comparing the two is pointless.

My point in saying that all those teams would beat the 1984 BYU NC team (while its probably true) is that it is what it is and takes nothing away from BYU 1984. Times have changed, there were "haters" then and "haters" now. The circumstances of the BCS currently is that they changed the system so that BYU 1984 never happens again. There is no clear cut #1 team right now, similar to 1984, hence four different teams getting #1 votes in human polls. BYU 1984 was fortunate to be in the right place at the right time with a bunch of other perennial powerhouse teams being down that year.

Whether BYU 1984 could beat any team that exists in the modern era will never be determined because it is impossible for them to step on the same field together. Its unfortunate that (though possible) we are not allowed to see the "best teams" from the same year determine who is best on the field.

If you call Oklahoma and Washington being "Down" with 1 loss, you must also think Alabama is "down" this year with 1 loss. I do not buy it for a second. That BYU 1984 team had NFL talent on both sides of the ball--guys that played many years in the NFL. Time will tell with the 2010 BSU team. And that is the point--BSU still has not done it yet, proved it yet or got it yet.

The 2010 Pittsburgh Pirates would beat the 1950s Yankees....And Napolean would kick Atilla the Huns rear end... (I can play too...)

To minimize the past because the present is better makes no sense. Different rules and a different set of circumstances.

It doesn't take away from 1984 at all.

Probably best summed up with the following comparison:

Was my wife 30 years ago prettier than your wife now?

Was your wife alive 30 years ago?

Mine was. That's the year I married her.

Does my wife now look better than my wife 30 years ago?

Does Elmer Fudd have a problem with his "Rs?"

So between wives and Fudds and living and not yet born there remains only one solid truth after all the discussion has ceased and the dust has settled. . .WE, the GLORIOUS COUGS, have a National Championship. The Pukes don't. Nothing can take that comparison away from us.

If my wife sees this, let her know that she looks better now than she did 34 years ago when I married her! Actually, that's really not much of an exaggeration.

Asking who would win if BSU '10 vs BYU '84 isn't the right question.

The discussion should be on which team would perform better if there were a playoff in '84 for BYU, or '10 for BSU, i.e. which team is better compared to the other top teams in their era.

so...let's discuss.

I personally have no idea about '84 because I was still a year away from existence. I do think that BSU would do very well this year. I a 16 team playoff, I'd definitely put them in the final four with Oregon, TCU, and either Alabama or Auburn depending on who wins when they play each other. Who would win from there is anybody's guess.

Great question

BYU played Baylor in 1984. Baylor's coach Grant Teaff said (when asked by the Deseret news whether BYU or Oklahoma was the better team) "We played both of them, lucky me, and I think BYU is better. We felt we had a chance against Oklahoma, but against BYU all I wanted to do was get the game over and get out of there."
