GunkAlthough, it's probably fairly set that Abouo will start at the 3, I thought it my be interesting to look at our options for that position.
The 3 spot last season was basically shared between Haws, JT and Abouo. If I recall correctly, sometimes there was some 2 playing by Haws and Abouo, but basically these were our 3s last season.Even though both JT and Haws are now gone, comparing Abouo to them ought to give us a barometer as to what we can expect from Abouo at the 3.
Haws - 26.4 min a game; 11.3 pts/game; 4.2 rebounds/game
JT - 23.6 min a game; 10.1 pts/game; 4.4 rebounds/game
Abouo - 12.9 min a game; 4.6 pts/game; 3.1 rebounds/game
On a per minute basis there is how Haws, JT and Abouo compared:
Haws - 0.43 pts/min; 0.16 rebounds/min
JT - 0.43 pts pts/min; 0.19 rebounds/min
Abouo - 0.37 pts/min; 0.24 rebounds/min
Abouo was clearly a better rebounder than both Haws and JT. He averaged only one-less rebound a game while playing half as many minutes. Scoring wise, JT and Haws were more productive. If you look at PPS (points per shot), though, Haws ranks highest between the 3s at 1.51 pps (Jimmer is 1.53), Abouo is at 1.34 and JT is at 1.14 (Surprise! JT shot and missed a lot).
Now, even if Abouo didn't improve in the off-season (I assume and hope he did) and we were to increase Abouo's min alone to roughly 25 min/game we could expect from him 9.25 pts/game and 6 rebounds/game (he'd be our best re-bounder). Assuming Abouo improved during the off-season and taking into account that as a starter he'd get more touches, I'm guessing we could expect roughly 12 points from him a game.
Now, unfortunately, we don't have much to go off of statistically to compare Abouo to our other options at the 3 for this season, which is part of my point. Possible 3s are:
1. Abouo
2. Magnusson
3. Zylstra
4. Rogers
5. K. Collinsworth
Magnusson and Zylstra probably won't see much playing time. K. Collinsworth will probably end up switching between the 2 and the 3. I haven't seen Rogers play, but sounds like he could play the 3 and also play the 4 given his height (6'8"). Basically our legit options at the 3 are:
1. Abouo - Junior with 2 years experience in the offense, great international experience and legit potential to put up 10 pts a game and grab 6 boards. Outstanding defender
2. K. Collinsworth - freshman with a lot of hype. Unproven, but could be a surprise. Time will tell. Defense (?)
3. Rogers - juco transfer. first season in the offense. Supposedly a streaking shooter. No idea on his rebounding. Time will tell. Defense (?)
As the season progresses and more stats come in, I think it will be interesting to compare the 3 spot. Unfortunately, it's a bit of an unknown for us, with either huge potential or a huge drop-off after Abouo.
