Robert Anae couldn't have dialed up a worse play

Notre Dame had no business throwing that ball into the end zone... their fg kicker would have been money from that range and they were killing Tulsa with yards after the catch on short dinks and dunks.



Don't blame that play on the freshman qb, there was no reason to call a pass there.



It was 2nd and 8 from the Tulsa 19 yard line and 42 seconds to go... ND deserved to lose that game..



Now they have to either beat Utah or USC (@ USC) or they dont' go bowling...

BTW - how bad is Notre Dame?



1-6 Duke is killing Navy 31 - 15 yet Navy beat Notre Dame 37 - 17 last week... 1-6 Duke



2 weeks from now is a win win. The Utes lose, their whole season loses credibility... ND loses and they're not going bowling.... again

Notre Dame would rather win by 6 than by 2.

Wasn't it Coach Edwards that said someday the Y would be the Notre Dame of the West? I think I'm beginning to see the similarity!

Maybe Anae wouldn't have called that, but he wouldn't know any better since he's on the sideline and has no advantage to make better calls after seeing the D from the birds eye.



One more point: Call or no call, he'd do the same thing over again.

Depending on how many time outs I had left and the confidence I had in my QB not making mistakes, I would take shots at the end zone before risking a miss on a field goal. But with a freshman QB, I probably would not have that level of confidence. Of course it depends on the confidence I have in my kicker and blocking. If you get a field goal blocked in that situation or miss it, all the fans and experts will be 2nd guessing why you bet the farm on one kick when you could have taken a shot or two first and then kicked if necessary.



Now if I had 3 timeouts left, I would have all kinds of other options of what I might try like dunk and dink and running plays. BUt a pass to the end zone with a QB that knows that he is to throw it away if it is not wide open - is a good call if you have confidence in the QB.



IN other words - last 2-3 years with Max Hall or with John Beck as a senior - I would take the shot.



With Jake Heaps and our receivers - I would run in the middle of the field until I either scored or ran out of time-outs and then kick the field goal - but then our last try got blocked iirc.



This is why I try to have a little more respect for the coaches. It is not as simple as we would all like it to be.



But we can still celebrate the loss. ND struggles and loses to Tulsa. Now they may beat a struggling USC and save thier season - but chances are that they lose that one too.

What's worse is the coach's response to the whole thing "We thought we had a good one-on-one matchup so we took a shot. People better get used to it (losing) because if we see that kind of matchup again, we're going to go after it." The kicker has hit 18 FG's in a row, you're on the nineteen, there's forty seconds left, you've got a timeout. Run the ball up the middle (or wherever your kicker likes to kick from) and you still might score a TD anyway. What a dummy!

Frankly, Kelly should be fired for having a student die on his watch because he allowed them to go up the tower.

Agreed. Someone in authority should have made the decision to get the towers down...someone needed to step up and noticed the danger and take action before such a tragic occurance.

I wonder if Kelly can survive this. There are a lot of ND fans pointing fingers at him for how he handled the death and aftermath. Then to pour salt on the wound, you cough up a nearly guaranteed win by not running the ball and kicking the fieldgoal.



This lawsuit/settlement should cost more than Charlie Cheeseburgers.

Uh...you might not want to challenge him on that one...
