BCS National Championship Scheduling

Why did Auburn jump to the top - SOS - I don't think so much - least likely to lose the rest of the year - I think so - the system is rigged and the BCS boys wanted to vault a team or two ahead of BSU, TCU, and U of U that are as unlikely to lose as BSU and even more unlikely to lose than TCU / Utah who have to play each other.



So what does a NC schedule look like and be patient - I am gong to come back with more posts showing who their "tough" opponents fattened up on to help themselves look tough.



Then decide what schedule BYU should shoot for. PS the other Notre Dame - Notre Dame East - is in a dog fight with Tulsa today. Army and Navy won't be going undefeated either.

Have your bottom dwellers fatten up on lower division teams at home, have your top dwellers do the same thing and then mop up on the bottom dwellers on your way to BCS Glory and then at some point you get Bama Vs Auburn for all the marbles and one gets to play for the NC and the other gets an at-large bid every time. Works like Novocaine.

But then Auburn beat the mighty 5-2 Arkansas Razorbacks 65-43 at home

We got the mighty 4-4 Georgia Bulldogs who are tied with the mighty 4-4 Gators in teh 4th QTR as we speak coming up. Can Auburn pull this off at home and remain undefeated. Oh - I forgot - they gotta shake of Ole MIss 1st. Maybe they forgot too.

The road to the title game - the SEC has every single team do this so the bottom lulls the nation into thinking they are good, losses in conference are excused, almost no risk of ever losing out of conference is taken - because that would screw up the model for the SEC, and the good teams are not all in the same division. THe only problem the SEC has is that pesky Title Game - otherwise it is almost impossible for the SEC not to produce at least 1 undefeated team every year - and as long as they do not lose the title game - they are in the NC game. Otherwise they are still in a BCS Bowl. That is how it works folks. BYU needs to learn this. Notre Dame - east has been a slow learner and has fallen from invincibility as a result.

I just hope Oregon and Auburn lose. I don't like either team.

And yet these fatted calves are 6-0 in BCS title games. I'm not saying they have tough out of conference schedules or are trying to play more on the road. They don't because they don't have to. Until another conference comes along and knocks off an SEC champ in the title game, they are going to continue to get the benefit of the doubt that the SEC is the toughest conference out there because no other conference champ has proven otherwise.



Look, let's not kid ourselves. If BYU could get away with scheduling the way the SEC schedules and make just as much money as the SEC gets to do so, they would do it in a heartbeat. But we can't because the West lacks the population (69 Million v. 109 Million in 2006) and the rabid fan base to get the advertising dollars that go to SEC teams for their TV contract. Trust me, I live in SEC country, and there isn't much besides sports going on most Saturdays. Everyone watches football of not only their team, but the other teams in the conference. It's much different out West (a lot more to do on Saturdays).

I just want BYU to follow the 7 home, 5 road model in Indedepndece. 6 and 6 is not good enough. We need 7 home games a year, plain and simple. If you truly want to be a top tier team, you need to limit you road exposure. The proof is in the results.

I agree. I live in Big Ten country (and am a Big Ten grad) and there's a lot of envy here for the SEC. You can tell there is when Big Ten supporters have to play the academics card to prove their supremacy to the SEC!



One more point to add--the SEC has the highest average attendance of any FBS conference. This a conference where the smallest stadium is Vandy at 39,000. If BYU were in the SEC, they would only have the 10th largest stadium, behind Kentucky and only ahead of Ole Miss, Miss State, and Vandy. BYU considers LES a tough venue--playing in front of 76,000 (SEC's average attendance in 2009) drunk screaming fans whose only religion is college football is difficult no matter how good or bad the home team is.



In a normal year, I think BYU could immediate jump into a Pac 10,Big 12, or Big Ten schedule and have a winning record, I think that BYU would struggle to go 3-5 in the SEC. BYU's only away win at an SEC stadium came in 2001 on a late field goal against 3-7 Miss State, with Doman and Staley playing most of the game.
