1st hand at laval game-halftime

Halftime. 42-22 byu



Jimmer looks like he could score at anytime. 3for3 from 3. Some very nice looking passes-- Improvement there over last year. Didn't play a lot, maybe 10 minutes.



Nick M- looks active and capable but 0 fofr 4 from 3.



Chris C- looks strong and active but picked 3 fouls on defense--pushing with hands. Must watch those kinds of foul trouble potential. But maybe refs are callinh it tight on him.



Noah--not dressed out. Don't know why.



Brandon D- looks a little improved over last year. A couple nice drop steps down low, but sets up to low and ended up several times with bad angles on shot. Looked solid on D and rebounding.



Jackson-definitely looks under control. Not as reckless abandon as I recall last year but still very Jackson.



Charles looks solid and under control. Solid on D and d-boards.



Stephen Rogers has no problem shooting often. Not very good accurate. I understand from the TBS article he might be streaky. Quick. Skinny!



Anson looked impressive on a few plays.



Anderson looks still oafy, but he hustles.



Logan M looked solid. Had 6 points first half. Good hustle. Seemed to be in the right places.



Kyle C looked quick, but a little uncertain at times. Nothing really impressive offensively but active. Not sure he will make us forget Tyler H, but way too early.

Kyle C started coming on really strong. He had a sweet spin move that dazzled the crowd, but matched it with alot of quick, solid ball.

Brock Zylstra ended up PoG, if I heard the announcer correctly on my way out. He buried 3 three's in the second half.

It will be interesting to see how similar or different this team is from last year. Looks to have similar potential. maybe we will be better inside with our bigs. That is the most important variable I am watching for this year. Chris C played the 5 for several minutes. Could be interesting with Davies, Chris C and Noah no the front line--if they would ever be mixed that way.

4 turnovers--so that looked really good.

38-36 rebounding, so looks like we may need to improved there.

Actually, I think you can draw a few conclusions.



Stephen Rogers isn't quite ready for the big time and will not challenge Charles, KC or CC (or even Zylstra( for the minutes that they want. But he will be an asset off the bench. Throw in Noah and Stephen is the odd man out for minutes for the time being. Good thing that Rogers has 3 to play 3; they can concentrate on getting him strong when they absolutely need him in the future.



Martineau is not as good (he was really good) as he was in the blue and white game and not as bad (he wasn't that bad) as he was in this game. He's going to be a solid backup point and is worthy of his scholarship. He's an asset and going to be leaned on heavily next season... so he needs minutes this year to be ready.



Brandon will lead our team in turnovers per touch. We had only 4 all night and 2 of them were from Davies. He simply is not an efficient passer. If he gets the ball in the post, expect it to be an attempt or a turnover.



Kyle Collinsworth is an extremely efficient player. He didn't turn the ball over once, yet led the team in assists (6), steals (2), had 5 boards and not a single foul. If you pair him up with guys that can score in Fredette, he can cause matchup problems. Jimmer will not have to have his hand on the ball to create now; something that killed us against Kstate. Kyle is really the 1st drive in and pass out guy we've had quite some time and he's the perfect complement to all the long distance shooters we have. He'll create major matchup problems for most average teams, particularly when he's running with the 2nd team to give Jimmer and Jax a breather.



Winder is likely a redshirt candidate if he can emotionally handle it and stay out of trouble. From all reports, he's a really good and smart kid but redshirts aren't for everyone.



Zylstra and Magnusson can be relied to run with the 2nd team this year. They're both more efficient and experienced with this offense. They won't raise any eyebrows but they don't hurt us when on the court.



Our rebounding still sucks... we basically dominated all other categories except rebounding (our ft % sucked too) total was 41-40.... unacceptable.. this is why we need a healthy and motivated Hartsock.

This is the key, yes. We need big men to board and put up points consistently for us. If we do that, we become an Elite 8 caliber team.

Zylstra will be a surprise. I'm not saying that he's going to be the 6th man or a super sub, but I think there's a role for him for 5-8 minutes a night where he can come in a make a difference. He can hit shots, he hustles, he rebounds and he plays hard. Rose knows he can go to Brock and get 100% effort for those minutes.

If they're going to continue to keep him on scholarship, then I'd expect nothing less for a kid that has 3 more years left.

I'm excited and wish I could have seen the game. I'd like to see Chris and Noah in at the same time. We could do it when up against smaller teams.



Little concerned about the rebounds. Realize the 2s were playing more than normal, but I'd expect in a 101 to 55 win that we would have dominated on the boards. Transition offense is the core strength of this team, which to a degree depends on getting boards and pushing it up the court. Focus first needs to be on getting the board.

Its cool to see both Kyle and Chris on the floor and to know that they are both there legitimately.

And I actually felt Kyle played better than Chris. Stats support that. I hope Chris gets his mid-range jumpers going. It was one game but he clunked several.
