First Sign of FSU/Nevada Mistake?

I wonder if the MWC is starting to have doubts about their overreaction to BYU leaving the conference? It's clear now that the only reason Fresno and Nevada were invited were to spurn BYU and attempt to strong arm the Cougs into staying. Is the MWC having some buyer's remorse knowing that their emotional and un-thought out decision was an awful one?

You know that there was some back room arm wrangling, because if the MWC was really ready to pay the $5 million exit fee, we wouldn't have seen the agreement play out the way that it did.



I see the MWC saying "wait a minute, we're not going to get 10 million worth of value by adding you guys, as a matter of fact the only way we were ever going to get 10 million worth of value would have been that if by adding you, BYU wouldn't have been able to leave” (which really is a great testament to the value of BYU to the MWC) so the MWC says, get the dollar figure to a number that works, and then come when you can - we ain't getting a BCS auto invite in the first round now anyway.





BTW this is exactly why BYU needed to leave, we generated the money that the MWC was using as leverage to keep us in the confernce.

I don't think it was a mistake on their end. It was an effort to keep the conference together, period. Had that not happened, the whole conference could have potentially fallen apart.



Despite my personal disdain for the Hair, from a business standpoint he has done a good job playing the cards he was dealt.



But still, with BYU's revenue generating power gone, the MWC is pretty much skrewed from a financial standpoint.

If he was any good at what he was doing we wouldn't have been in this situation where we are. I agree that it was a good move by Hair to have done what he did to protect his conference, but if he was really brilliant and not just PO'd at what BYU was doing, he'd have called the conference leaders together and voted an exception for BYU to be able to be independent and still keept their other sports in the MWC. Yes, that would diminish his ability to negotiate a better FB TV contract when the current one FINALLY expires, but what is the down side to have all the other BYU sports still in the conference? Am I missing anything other than Hair being stubborn? That's where he lost my vote for reelection.

Simply put, Hair works for Comcast. The MWC Presidents may think he works for them, but he does not. Comcast owns MWC Sports. Owns it. They do nothing without the permission of Comcast. The University Presidents and ADs are basically powerless, and Comcast calls the shots, with Hair being their #1 lap dog. BYU was smart to get out of that arrnagement. It was bad. Of course,BYU is partially to blame for it too since they founded the MWC and signed off on the stupid MTN NEtwork in teh first place.

MWC did the best thing under the circumstances. TIme will tell how well it works out. If TCU stays, they have a nice football line-up and probably as decent as they had befor this all started. BSU swap for Utah is a wash. FSU and Nevada do not provide as much top end as BYU has provided, but now MWC has 3 AFA caliber teams in the middle. Money wise - they will have a problem until the MTN agreement expires - which is a long time from now and the reason BYU is gone.



MTn West still trumps COnf USA, WAC, SUn Belt, and the toher have nots. That is who and wha tthye are and being in denial of that only leaves one choice - go INdependent and hope it works out. Trust me - the jury is stil lout on BYU Independence.



Hopefully a couple of MWC teams need an opponent next year or we may only have 10 games in 2011. YOu can't even just grab a TCS team easily these days (two or three actually if you wan tto take advantage of the 13 game option we are entitled to) becasue they are already all booked playing Florida, Alabama, and almost every other BCS school.



I hope we cna get three games with New Mexico to round out the schedule next year. Seriously. Then we go Bowlin.

Hair created the problem with BYU, pushing us towards independence, but then he saved the MWC from being devoured by the WAC because of that. He made a mess, but then he stopped that mess from becoming even worse.
