Certified Family Member / Former Player User Groups

I've been thinking about creating user groups that certify a user on here as a family member or former player (two separate groups).



This would be an optional group, if someone wants to claim to be a family member of a player or a former player they could contact me and we would work out how to confirm that they are in fact who they say they are. Those who would rather remain regular anonymous users may do so.



This would help make it clear people like Linette Chambers really are Linette Chambers, and lend some credibility to what they have to say in regards to their children, siblings, etc.



What say you? Is this a good idea, bad idea? Is it not popular enough to even consider?

I think if you had a process to identify former players and family members, that in turn would agree to come forward, (IMO) would cut down on some of the rumors that cross this board. My only concern would be, once a former player or family member came forward; would these individuals be inundated with questions from board members? Is there a method to shield them from harrassment?



I like the idea, it could help sort out the fact from fiction before a rumor takes off with a life of its own.

I think it's a good idea but you should keep it simple and group them into one category so members can still be a little anonymous and not get current players in trouble. Maybe you could just designate them together as "Certified" members.

I'm mixed about this idea. On one hand I like the surety of knowing who to trust with reports even more so than I currently do. On the other hand I wonder though if this will inhibit their willingness to share if people knew for sure their level of involvement in the program whether past or present. I know you mentioned anonymity and maybe that would be good to have them PM you and then you 'forward' the inside scoop to us.



Bottom line is this: I'm facinated about the cool stuff that happens (mostly the positive but admittedly I'm intrigued by some of the significant 'dirt' too) and I have no other way to learn more about the team and love to cheer for. So whatever can be done to enhance that experience for me I would welcome! Thanks for all you mods do! Best BYU site on the www.

Rather than sit there arguing statistics, and non-facts.



The thing I would be wary of, is the 100 thousand chambers threads on here, followed by 101 thousand "you can't post that, don't you know his mom comes on this site!?!?" If we had more "registered" members could we not talk about them, too? If Robert Anae or his wife frequented the forum, would we suddenly not be able to post anything contrary to him?



I am all for identifying people who want to be identified, we just need to change the perception above.

I agree with this, I would just like to add, one thing I absolutely hate is when people do come on here with opposing points of view and so people automatically assume that they must be a family member and use that to justify not having to act civilly or respond to their arguments. Not everyone who defends an unpopular position has a vested family interest in it.

what is wrong with having an agenda. just because someone is biased or has an agenda does not mean they cannot make rational points in support of their agenda. I don't see it being any different than anybody else. also i think the idea of certifying them is dumb and even if you wanted to do it i am going to bet that not one family member signs up for it.



i agree with the fact that family members on the board worries me because they take to heart what a few losers who care more about byu football than they should say. that is what makes me uncomfortable. it is hard for them to not take the negative comments personally. its can cause damage and hard feelings. that is what i don't like. i think the players and their families would be better off ignoring us losers who are waaaaay too obsessed about it to have a healthy opinion anyway. :evil:

I try to be pretty careful about what I say anyway, but if I knew a bunch of certified family members were openly out here, it would definitely curtail my candor by knowing they are on here. To me, expressing what I think (since the football coaches and players have forgotten more football than I know) is far less important than hurting the feelings of the loved ones of the players. I know they are doing their best on the field, and some times I just want to complain and vent about a failed play here or there. Family members are certainly welcome to come on here, but I wouldn't if I was family to a player. I don't think I would want to hear how a bunch of ignorant fans (which, let's face it, we are ignorant about what is going on behind the scenes) think of my son's performance.



In short, and I know I can only speak for myself, having certified family members would more likely curtail my speech, though I try to be respectful anyway.
