Missed PI call

Hey cougar fans, I hate to bring up old stuff from last Saturday's game, but I've seen pictures of the missed PI on Bradley. Obviously I didn't see the game. I listened on line but missed this. What play was that? Was it the same play where Van Noy tipped the ball? If Van Noy tipped the ball there is no pass interference.

Thanks for an explanation.

I definitely know the PI call was NOT the same play where KVN tipped the pass, because that was the final play of the game.

That gets you one step closer to your answer.

Personally, I think Bradley made a great play on the ball. The defender has the chance to do that and just because there is some contact does not always means auto PI. Photos show Bradley with a nice layout stretching for the ball before it got the the receiver. What it does not show is if he wrapped his right arm around the guy. If not--no PI. If he did, then it was a PI.

PI is a judgment call. Watching it live it didn't look like it at all, watching the replay I'd say it would be questionable at best, so the no call was the right call in this case.

I don't think just having the arm on them is enough to typically get called. It is when you turn the receiver with the away hand that it usually gets called. IIRC Rich got called for that earlier in the game. He broke up the pass with one hand but the other hand was on the back shoulder turning the receiver.

Actually, it is typically enough to get the call. It's like holding--the refs look for hands outside the pads, and if they see it, you get flagged even if you do not turn the guy. With PI, you wrap the guy with your off hand while making a play on teh ball, and it gets called. With the game being as fast as it is, refs are trained to look for these things to help them.

I was at the game sitting on row 8 at about the 25 yard line. The play happened right in front of me. As the play happened my initial reaction was to jump up and down and yell in excitement because I thought it was a great play by Bradley. Immediately after my initial reaction I looked for a flag because I did notice Bradley's hand on, or almost on, the back of the receiver. If they would have called it I would have been mad and would have thought it was being extremely ticky-tacky, but I would have understood that it was not an outrageous call. As it stood, I thought it was the right call (no-call) for the situation.

It's not PI unless they call it. Those DBs and receivers are getting after it all game long. They could call PI a lot more if they wanted to. TCU is one that has always gotten away with a lot more contact than usual and rarely get called. It probably could have been called on the play in question, but I'm glad it wasn't as our guy made a good play on the ball and did not wrap up the receiver.

While it also frosted WY's keister, I also liked the refs waiving off of PI against us earlier in the game

The late hit call on Carta-Samuels was a bit of a judgement call as well and we lost out on that one. It all averages out.

I didn't see the play live because I don't have the Mtn, but I did see the reply online on their website, and I heard good ole' impartial Joe Glenn call it PI. You gotta love the journalistic integrity there.

From what I saw, it looked like textbook technique. The way I was taught in high school (granted it was high school), was to do what Bradley did and that it is only PI if the ref calls it. I can hardly remember a play on a ball where the DB was in good position where he didn't have his hand on the receiver's back. Bradley made a great play from what I saw. Granted, if the ref had seen the hand and felt like it caused interference, then he would have called it and I would have disagreed  , but I could have seen where he was coming from.

This season has made me think that maybe we need to go back to the days before replay and just let the officials call the game and have the final word. I can't remember a year where there has been so much whining about the referees. I thought that was part of sportsmanship, to focus on playing the game or coaching the game, and let the referees do their job, understanding that they make the best call they can at full speed.

Gordon Monson and Al Gore are really the same person. Gordon was trying to convince some massage therapist to release his 2nd Chacra when the play happened. Therefore, I don't think he is a reliable expert witness. :P

This was pretty much my exact perspective while at the game as well.

I would label it as incidental contact, but there was a hand, make that an arm on the back of the receiver that certain replay anlgles showed. But he wasn't shoving the guy or grabing him - more like touching than pushing and definitley not holding.

On the other hand, I remember one play where the Wyoming DB knocked our receiver 5 feet, a little further off the line than he should have been making contact, and our receiver recovered, and iirc, caught the pass - and no flag was dropped.

It seems like refs in general are allowing a little more contact than in past years and smart defenses are taking advantage of that.

That comment is not based on a lot of concrete data and just a reaction I had during the game watching blury images on a tiny screen from a rock in the middle of the Pacific on Internet TV.

And the guy switched channels right at then end so I didn't get to hear what the announcers ha dto say about the win - I thinki it was a Wyoming guy that had the sling going.

You can't see his right arm, but if it's across the receiver's back it's almost always a call. Whether the ball is knocked down or not.

I didn't feel like he interfered, but his arm was around him so I felt like we got away with what they would normally call a penalty on.

i agree. on television the reply clearly shows his other arm wrapped around him. it was a pi, but sometimes they get called and sometimes they don't. it didn't in this case. it goes both ways.

Since the SDSU non reversal this kind of crap has gotten way out of hand.
