Charmin Should Sponsor the Student Section

I was able to go the BYU game yesterday.This was the first game I have been able to attend in a few years. I was raining and nasty. I have never been so disappointing in the student section. They were sitting down the whole Game. I can understand sitting in the old person section but the student section should be crazy. The team needs the support even though they are 3-5. Rise and Shout not sit down and be quite.

no, you wouldn't want to rise and shout. Football games should be a friendly environment where one can feel the spirit.

No need to stand up when the section is half empty and no one is in front of you.



Yeah, the student sections were the least full in the stadium at kickoff and throughout the game. I'd say that the BYU students deserve some criticism.

well let's face it lawboy - 95% of the students at BYU know little to nothing about the sport. Hence all the comically stupid comments you'll hear at games.



In fact, did anyone else catch this during the game? I believe it was on BYU's second or third drive (so we were up at least 9-0), and we ran the ball for 8 yards, and a student from the crowd shouts "PASS THE BALL!!!" This despite the fact that we were averaging probably around 6 yards per carry.

Is it any wonder they stop showing up when BYU is losing?

I am as hard or harder than most on the student section, but maybe since football isn't our #1 priority for BYU, it is also not #1 for the students. It is 4th or 5th down the list:



1. Look cute so I can get married

2. Study

4. Bear my testimony starting "The last couple weeks have been really hard... (SOB!! - TISSUE GRAB WHILE LOOKING AT THE CEILING)

The guys would be about the same thing, except the testimony would go like this, "I'm just so glad to be here around all these good examples, I remember thinking on MY mission how can anyone ever fall away, but then after, it was just so hard and I ... blah blah blah, insert weak story about less-activism here - I'm vulnerable, blah blah blah... I'm strong, but I need someone to carry me along, maybe it's you in the second row."

Wait, the fans aren't overly excited for a 3-5 team that has one of the worst offenses ever at BYU? Weird.

We with my son pretty sick and my not wanting him to get sicker (he's 22 and married), we waited until the rains stopped 5 minutes until the game started to get out of the car (we'd been there for a couple of hours and had gotten breakfast at Denny's). So we escaped the rain entirely. As we watched the first drive from ground level, not yet wanting to ascend the seats to upper nose-bleed level, we began to think that maybe there would be those "Blue-hairs", as people refer to them, who would have stayed home and watched the game on TV and we could take one of their seats.



Bingo, we get a seat in section 6, right on the 40 yard line 13 rows up. Wow, what a difference it is to see a game from those seats. Into the start of the 2nd quarter, the two owners of the seats arrive. The two seats to our left had remained opened and surely no blue hairs were going to come to the game that late. During half time the pair shows up with that look, "How dare you sit in our seats". Yea, you're welcome that the seats are now dry and warm. I know you would have wanted to do that yourself. Well the two seats directly below us had remained open, so we migrated once again and cleaned off our third set of chairs. We ended up moving one more time as the man and his little boy on our right that had been there at kickoff and left, came back and said the boy wanted to sit with his cousins in the south endzone, so we could have their seats. We moved so we wouldn't have to move again.



I had always heard the complaints about the "blue-hairs" not cheering and it is so true. What disappointed me gravely was that therefore, neither do their children. It appeared to me that the most of the fans from that section were the 2nd or so generation and only a few of the originals were there. They look to be in upper 20's to 40's, not "blue-haris" themselves, but they follow that same approach and sit there as though they are at a funeral. I am so disappointed in the average BYU fan. They're a bit embarassing. No one though seemed agitated at our noise, so I didn't get any unpleasant stares that I was aware of, but the disappointment was is that this problem will continue on for generations.

Funny, but REALLY cynical!



I think everyone's become a little spoiled. My freshman year (1973), the Cougars still had the "card stunt" section in the middle of the student side of the field. It was a great opportunity to sit in that section, as they were the best seats in the house. I remember a couple of games where they had to scour the student section to get enough students to fill the card-stunt section. One of these games was against New Mexico, where Jay Miller set the NCAA record for receptions in a game (I think it was 22). Even though the attendance by the students was disappointing, those that came had plenty of fun. The expectations for the team back then were pretty limited, as BYU hadn't really been a winning program for years. Because of the success in the intervening years, the students and others come in expecting a blow-out win every time.

Amen, I work with Ute fans and this is what they say all the time about cougar fans. But there right and I am glad I am not the only coug fan with this opinion.

Oh yeah, great point a1247. I've met a lot of Ute fans that have unbiased and deep insight into the BYU fanbase. I'd suggest you keep listening to those sources about BYU football, especially their opinion about our fans. :sulk:

Say what you want as I've sat one and a half games in the East Bleachers and 2 1/2 in the student section this year...and the student section was WAY more fun, active, loud, etc. Against Wyoming, I sat the first half with the students (& admittedly there were many open seats) and the second half up in the East bleachers. The student section isn't the MUSS, but they are WAY more vocal, loud, and fun than the regular fans. If the University would get it together and actually put the students together in decent spots like Utah does, it would be a whole different ball game. I blame the University and their seating set up for the students...different spot every game, different people, odd placement, etc.

Rumor has it, the seating for student is changing as soon as next year. I think they are still deciding whether to stick the students in the north or south endzone. Personally, I say stick them all in the North endzone, keep the band where it is, the move the away fans to the southwest corner. I think having them all together in one endzone would be great. Just so long as it is the north endzone.

Your retort is, "i didn't know utah had fans." Ask him why they couldn't sell out their pathetic stadium last week when they are a top 10 ranked team. while byu fans are wierd, utah fans have no place to be talking.

Students should be on the sidelines like the MUSS. All United and loud (& required to wear blue!) where they can make an impact regardless of where the other team is on the field.

I wonder if most people who talk about the student section even know where the student section is these days. I have had Cougar United (the student fan organization) until last year. The first year of the program it was very loosely organized, the next year, the Cougar United section was grouped in the South Endzone directly behind the goal post. Then it moved to the first several or so rows along the East bleachers, directly behind the players. I had seats on the first row and 2nd row at the 40 yard line 2 years in a row. This section was always extremely active and LOUD. There were fewer of the abercrombie kids and girls looking to get married in the Cougar United section, they sat in the rotating student seats higher up and in the endzones.



The problem is, BYU refuses to reward true student fans by giving them the best seats and are going back to the earlier model of all students pay the same amount, and thus priority seating isn't provided for the real fans who are willing to put their money where their mouth is.

Are you one of the "blue-haris that have a seat around me at the game? It would explain a lot to me if you are. Not that there is anything wrong with the old.

Were you at the LES on Saturday? I was and im pretty sure percentage wise it had just as many missing fans as the Utah game. Bad weather and the opening of the deer hunt isnt the best weekend for gate sales.

I dont mean to sound like Im defending frUte fans. But come on most BYU fans at the games on Saturday act like there mentally going over there sunday school lesson in there head. My hell we can't even get everyone to wear freakn blue. But how many people do you see not wearing red to Utah games? They have a black out game and EVERYONE and I do mean EVERONE shows up in black. Could BYU pull that off. NO! And dont say they could, because we cant get people to stop wearing pink, red, or orange shirts to the game. If they wont wear blue they sure as hell won't show up in black.



Those of us that come to this web site are not the average fan. We all eat sleep dump BYU football. But go to a game and you will see at least 20,000 people walking around in a daze like there just there going through the motions. Like its some kind of church calling to be there and thats why they'er there. They drive me nuts!
