Who improved the most from last week?

Considering how horrible Ashworth has been, he got my vote for finally actually contributing. Heaps, VanNoy and Kariya all looked about the same (for better or worse). Hoffman was too absent in the passing game today to get my vote although it isn't too often your kick returner has more return yards (104) than your offense has passing yards (81).

Kariya has looked good almost every game this year, except early on, so he's not most improved.



Heaps threw a TD pass, but I don't see anyway anyone can excuse that interception. One of the absolute worst I've ever seen.



Hoffman looked really good on kick-off returns, but he's at least shown some stuff in previous games.



Van Noy also looked good, but again, he's had a few flashes throughout the year.



Ashworth, however, has sucked all year long, so his stepping up today gets my vote.

Yeah, but he hasn't been a primary kick returner before this week, so "most improved" didn't really fit the bill for his special teams contributions. I think he might be our offensive MVP for setting the table for us to get the early lead, but not "most improved" when it's his first week doing the task.

When you go from negative -100 to anything positive, you win the prize.



This is a no brainer, when you go from being so bad that you probably dont' deserve a scholarship to 6 catches 60 yards and a touchdown.. you've improved times infinity

(at least on the day)



Ashworth has been so bad that it probably took Oneill Chambers throwing all of Heaps locker contents at Bronco to even get this chance. At least he took advantage of it.

Ashworth, hands down. But for him, we don't score that TD in the second half. He had two key receoptions, with a nice catch on a beautiful throw by Heaps in the endzone. I was to the point if Ashworth never played another down this season, I wouldn't have complained or cared.

I disagree- Kariya rarely fumbles.



He still got more carries today than JJ while getting less yards per carry. As is typical for Anae's pet.

Yep, 4.6 vs 5.2, but his long run was longer than JJ's. Not to mention he's much more consistent, he averaged 4.8 last week too, while JJ was just 1.2.

Ashworth still had a dropped pass, and another one of his catches dealt with him happening to be in the right place at the right time. I'm not underplaying what he did - he had a very good game - but there's still enough to suggest that he's not D1 material.



KVN - on the other hand - has looked fantastic lately. Here he is a freshman and he's already becoming one our biggest defensive play makers. I will be SERIOUSLY bummed if he ever gets suspended for HC issues. He is going to be a very special player in the future.

True, but Ashworth's two biggest catches came from perfectly thrown passes by Heaps. Just because our receivers suck this year doesn't mean that we should be giving them all the credit in the world for catching passes that any D1 receiver should be able to catch.

Again, not trying to underplay his game, I just think that KVN's progress has been more genuine.

Ashworth, because after the second or third catch, I turned to my dad and said, "Well, he's not Ashworthless anymore. "

It actually took a week of good practice performance and an injury to Jacobsen and OC getting suspended for Ashworth to get so many touches. Any more casualties and we may start to appreciate him- especially if he catches a few more passes.



Someone mentioned his drop but iirc it was thrown hard and behind him - catchable maybe- but with Heaps receivers have no idea where the ball is going to come and sometimes it comes at bullet speed. Anyway, the receivers should probably check behind them first, high 2 nd, and if nit there, look to see if it is where it was supposed to be.



On the official game thread someone asked if anyone noticed that Kariya ignored Heaps when he was looking for someone to high five or body slap after the TD pass. It did look that way and seemed like Heaps had to look all over to find someone to help him celebrate. It might just be rhat everyone was taken by surprise and shock or have forgotten how to celebrate a TD pass.

Ashworth for Most Improved and Van Noy or Kariya for Most Valuable. Van Noy has been the most impressive true freshman lately, but then he is actually a no-shirt freshman due to his one year suspension before arrival.

Ashworth, easy.



2nd might be JJ. He had a horrible game against TCU last week -2 yards per carry?-, and was best on the team today with 5.1. Though that is more his typical performance, with last week being the aberration.

Ashworth went from "please take his scholarship away'" to "good game."
