Chow, Crowton, or Anae?

One of those pointless threads...





Anae led BYU to score 17 combined points in their last 3 games against TCU. They had 13 yards at halftime last week. BYU has passed for less than 100 yards twice this season. WRs had 1 catch last game, and TEs added just 1 more.



Chow led UCLA to score 13 points against Oregon yesterday... Oregon scored 60. UCLA hasn't even being making bowls lately, and that with an LDS QB (Prince) that they won the recruiting battle with BYU for. Crowton is infamous at LSU now for their QB controversies. The fans absolutely despite their current 2-man system, in which neither guy looks very good. I'll go with Crowton--you can't teach an old dog new tricks it seems so I'll take who I believe to be the youngest and most open to adapting an offense to...y'know they have all sucked immensely so this is an unfair question!!!

I picked Norm Chow and I think part of that is the halo effect. I remember it sounding just about like it does now with Anae in Chow's last year, but he went on to have several prosperous seasons at NC State and USC. He was okay in the NFL. What I liked about him was in watching the game last night, for a coach well entrenched as a OC, he had drawn UCLA toward the pistol offense. That shows me a willingness to change and that's is my biggest beef with Anae.



Crowton could do well. We only knew him as a HC here. I remember rumblings from the players of his playbook being too extensive when he was here.

The irony of this post, even with the disdain many have for Crowton, Chow, and Anae - Anae is here and apparently willing - neither Chow nor Crowton would come unless they were suddenly unemployed, still wanted to coach, and could find nowhere else to go. BYU fans would be a big part of the reason. Chow wanted to be a head coach, never got the shot, but still turned down a chance to interview at BYU to replace Crowton.



Crowton probably makes as much or nearly as much as Bronco and is on the big stage at LSU after being on a decent stage at Oregon in the BCS mainstream. He won't be coming.



So as we all petition to fire Anae, whom I agree can be stubborn about play calling to his detriment and to the detriment of the team at times, there are not a lot of super stars waiting in the wings to move to Provo.



For example - I would move to Provo in a heartbeat - my wife, who is LDS, and grew up in SLC, refuses to consider moving to Utah. It is in the rear view mirror for her - even though our two youngest sons are at BYU.



Don't take that as a slam against Provo. My wife just wants to retire in Ventura County California where my daughter lives and tries every chance she gets to steer the boys that direction post BYU. Now I know coaches wives have to be a bit used to picking up and going where the opportunties take their husbands, but if there husband has a job in Louisiana, a state where they have lived previously when he coached LA Tech, and where they have now been for a few years again - personal circumstances might rule out a transfer even if Crowton wanted to come back - which I am sure without even asking himn - he does not.

PS - in this fantasy question - I picked Chow - more proven in our environment - I am not sure we have the type of athletes Crowton needs to succeed.

I'll take Chow's credentials are day over the other 2. By the way, Chow getting run coincided with a downturn in talent at BYU, and at the QB position in particular. Anae might be against a similar issue right now. Having said that, as far as I am concerend, Anae has 5, maybe 6 games to audition for the BYU OC job in 2011, and it starts tomorrow.

Not Crowton. The offense changed every week which caused a lot of fumbles etc. The opposing teams defense didn't know what we were going to run but it looked like neither did our team.



Chow was a great in game adjuster, something Anae can't do, but played games and put up walls with the players. Plus he's a man with out an offense right now. He is experimenting w the pistol because his was not working. (neither is the pistol.)



That leaves me w Anae. If one receiver, any receiver can get open consistantly I think we will be able to move the chains again.

I had to vote for Chow.



The offense never changes for Anae. I don't know much about football, & I can predict the plays.



Under Crowton our own guys didn't know what they were running.



Couldn't we get an Anae / Crowton hybrid?

Crowton.



I will take too much offensive strategy and intuition over none any day of the week, and twice on sunday.



I mean, throwing in a play that we haven't practiced on gameday because it fits the flow of the game doesn't seem so bad watching the playcalling and overall offensive showing this year.

Voted Chow.

Not scared to make changes to a failing gameplan.

Also has at least SOME creativity. and WAY less predictable... of course anyone is less predictable than Anae.

According to Louisiana public records Crowton is the highest paid state employee at $425,000. That's even higher than Les Miles, the head coach. But of course old Les gets a few buckets of bills in bonuses and endorsement money that Crowton doesn't get.



At BYU Crowton made $400,000.



Bronco is estimated to make just under a cool million. The price of coaching at BYU has really gone up since Lavell. The only thing we can thank Kwitt for (other than some stellar play during his college years) is helping to teach the BYU powers that coaches need to be paid well.



And to answer the question....I'd take Crowton calling plays for a team coached by Anae during the week with Chow as an independent consultant who's only job is to review film and suggest pregame schemes and halftime adjustments.

46.8 points per game in 2001...

22.7 in 2002

16.3 in 2003

24.3 in 2004



He's always good for one good year and then a bunch of lousy ones offensively. He has followed the same pattern at LSU, Oregon, La. Tech and everywhere else he has coached.

Someone said that Chow was great at making in-game adjustments. IIRC, his inability to do just that was his biggest down side and the reason I wanted him gone.

as far as your wife not being willing to move back to UT -- I've heard of this a lot lately.. solid LDS native Utahns that refuse to move back. Recruiting people to BYU in my field is reportedly difficult for this reason. Is this an epidemic?
