Does it kind of tick anyone else off that Heaps wears # 9

I know the Mac's number was never retired, but come on...he IS # 9 at BYU. Have some respect Jakers, and define a number for yourself.

I have no problem with it. People still wear number 8 (a retired jersey), number 14 (another retired jersey, number 12 (a current retired jersey and future one as well). There are reasons why colleges retire jersey's and not numbers. Heaps also isn't the only person to have worn 9 since 1981.

True, but A QB wearing the number of one of the all time greats at his same position? It's not a huge deal, but if I were in Heaps shoe's I'd want to define my own number.

You really can't retire college numbers easily. Most teams have to share numbers between offensive and defensive players as is. Happens when you have 4 year careers and over 100 roster slots (85 scholarship) per year. A lot of people will cycle through the same number. The best a college team can do is to reserve numbers for good players. Like Syracuse RB #44, USC LB #55, Michigan #1, etc.

Bigger fish to fry. Thi is a very small sidebar issue. How about getting our offense straightened out. I wouldn't care if our guys wore rhinestone helmets if they could just get this team straightened out!! So much work to do.

I think Jake deserves a break. He is just as much a victim of our offensive doldrums as he is a causative factor. He's been thrown into the fire with little experience, and he hasn't quite learned Div I game speed. However, he has thrown some beautiful passes that have been dropped. I actually felt sorry for the kid against TCU. I think he is an outstanding young man, and could become great at his position if we don't destroy him before he has a chance to develop a groove with his team and build some momentum.

Really with everything that is going on right now with the program, there really is someone out there that is worried that Jake is wearing Macs old number. :bug: WOW!!!!!!!

I'm more bothered by the fact that they make cherry Dr. Pepper... I mean... isn't cherry one of the 23 flavors already in there?

I utterly reject Dr. P's claim of 23 flavors. If you are going to claim you have 23 flavors, you darn well better have more than eight listed ingredients.

QB's usually wear #'s 1-19. At BYU, #'s 8 and 14 are retired, dropping it to 17 possible numbers. When Jake came to BYU, the following #'s were already taken: 1 (JP), 4 (OC), 5 (BB), 6 (MJ), 7 (BL), 10 (JJ), 13 (RN), 16 (Falslev), 17 (Jaussi), 18 (Galei AND Wilson) and 19 (MM). Cody Hoffman redshirted last year and took #2. James Lark came back in spring to take #3. Munns' was #12, IIRC, before his mission. So, the following numbers would have been available without causing problems among the team and, especially, the other QB's: 9, 11 & 15. What number would you choose if you'd always been #9?

No, I'm pretty sure #8 was retired while Matt Berry was wearing it and would not be used after him. I know for a fact that #14 was.

Can anyone think of another QB since McMahon who's worn #9? I can't. I think 30 years is a sufficient amount of time between QBs wearing the number.

Though I'm not the biggest fan of Heaps (still think he has tons of potential), no one should have a problem with him wearing a number that's not retired. If Mac wants it, he'll get done what he needs to, in the meantime, quitcherbitchin.

We are ready to enshrine McMahan? Give me a break. That loudest of applause for all the QB's was not about, "Mac we forgive you and we embrace you as one of us, Please join the Church." It was a sycophantic gesture by fans suggesting that we so desperately need him and his antics as though we had no other Hall-of-fame QB heroes to honor and hold up.

Please Jake! Redeem the #9! Give us something to cheer about. Cause right now we cant get the beer-can-chucking, academically whining Babylonian out of our minds.

That said, I know a lot of teams have unofficial retired numbers--perhaps after Heaps is done wearing #9, the BYU equipment folks can refuse to issue #9 to anyone out of respect for Jim McMahon.



The best number retirement ever was in 1987, when the Boston Bruins retired Phil Esposito's #7. Alternate captain, Ray Bourque, who was wearing #7 at the time, skated out to center ice, and handed Esposito the #7 off his back, revealing a #77 jersey. Fast forward another 15 years, and the Bruins (and Avalanche) retired Bourque's #77.



If BYU ever retires #9 while Heaps wearing it, I hope Heaps makes a similar gesture.

Austin Collie wore #9 and did the number proud. Hopefully Heaps will too, and it will be retired for two or three players.
