Official Petition to Hire Ben Cahoon

I think it's time to offer and announce the hiring of Ben Cahoon, effective as soon as he can finish up his season north of the border. Maybe he'd even consider leaving before the season is over? Nah...



Lets get this to 500 strong!

My vote would be for Eric Drage. We need someone with his fire to light a fire under our recievers.

I like Drage too, I just talked to him at a Big Blue Bash 1 or 2 years ago. He was my first choice, but it's hard to deny Cahoon's effictiveness and passion for the game, which moved him to #1 for me.

Chad Lewis.

Cahoon is my parents neighbor, one of the best guys you'll ever meet. We need him as soon as he retires from the CFL.

Cahoon gets my vote by a long shot. Just like Bronco taking over the defense and installing his attitude and expectations in two weeks the same thing would happen with Cahoon. Ben know what it takes to run crisp routes, find holes in zones, focus on the ball even when getting hit, and catch each ball thrown. The expectation with him is if he touches the ball he should catch it, if you don't and continue to drop balls you should ride the pine until you can prove otherwise. He's one of the greats.



Now where are the petitions to fire Anae, and strenght coach (forgot name)?

I would be happy with any of the potential coaches mentioned here (Cahoon, Drage, or Lewis). I'm wondering if someone like Lewis would have the potential to come in as OC? He's certainly shown a great deal of intelligence (have you heard him speak in public? - Impressive). I would think that any of these men would be a plus on the recruiting side.

I think Anae and Higgins have to be feeling the heat right now. Whether Bronco makes a move or not, I have no idea. He fired Hill to get the heart and soul of his team back. So does he need to do the same with the offense? It sure seems so, but you never know with Bronco.



I do know that Bronco has used Chad Lewis to coach up the TEs in summer training, as Chad said on Bronco's coaches show a few weeks back. So he is being used in an informal way already. Coach anae coahes that position now--along with the play calling, and both have sorta sucked this year--so--read into that what you want.



I think this is just a year where faults get put under the microscope. doing that has helped the d in 2 short weeks, and I hope the O gets similar scrutinization soon. It needs it.

We need to fire Anae now in case we end up beating utah. I don't want to give anybody the excuse of keeping him around. If we are ever going to reach our goals on the national level he needs to go.

Lets keep this conversation on the receivers coach, and who to replace him with. Comments about Anae can be placed on the 150 other threads about him.



Personally, I would fire Higgins today and Anae at the end of the season.

Not being in the know on this, I found myself wondering out loud if Cahoon, Drage, and others mentioned have coaching Or just great player skills, whether they want to coach, and whether moving to Provo and the BYU pay scale are a fit.



I have seen these chat boards get all giddy over the years with coach dream lists to then see people take their names off the list until it narrowed down to Kwhitt who turned his Alma mater down to stick with the enemy and finally the DC gets promoted. It worked out with Lavell Edwards and was off to a great start with Bronco.



Does anyone know if there really is a match of interests and abilities here?

Cahoon has stated in recent deseret news articles that he wants to get involved in coaching when his playing career is over, he even hinted that he'd be willing to end his playing career early for the right (hint hint BYU) coaching job.



Eric Drage recently spoke at the Big Blue Bash about his desire to coach receivers at BYU.



So both of those options seem like likely candidates.

My preference would be for Lewis to come in. He is able to coach both the TE's and WR's (he was a good pass catching Tight End). Since we are only able to have so many coaches, that would be a great way to kill two birds with one stone. I also think he would have enough potential to grow into an OC role, and would be great recruiter. Plus, he has already done a little voluntary work with the TE's.



Drage or Cahoon would be great second choices, and sometimes, second choices turn out to be just what the doctor ordered. ;)

I voted for Cahoon. He is to the CFL what Jerry Rice was to the NFL, and he wants to coach.



Drage has some coaching experience. Lewis has been helping in an informal way. Sounds like we have many options that would improve this team.

I'll have to admit, I have a bias towards Eric Drage because he was the staffing recruiter that helped me get my job :) Having said that, I watched his career probably closer then Ben Cahoon's and I loved his fire and intensity. He is one of these guys that has "it", similar to Brandon Doman. I was hoping he would get the job when Bronco first got his HC position, I know he interviewed for it and was passed over for our current guy.

I don't know if these guys can coach - but I loved them as players. I am big on experience as some of you may haven noticed. Since the receivers can't catch - if you want to take a risk that Cahoon can play like Hello but may or may not be experienced or capable of coaching at this level right now - He should be abl eto teach receivers how a slow white guy can make a living catching passes by CATCHING them. He could certainly teach them how to separate from someone that might be faster, more athletic, can jump higher, etc., by running precise routes with precise timing. Cahoon did not drop passes. Maybe 1 or two in his entire BYU career. But people in Canada will probably try to get Cahoon to stick around and make big bucks advertising Apple iPads on the Jumbo Tron or maybe FORD or Dodge TRUCKS - reliable and tough. Someone better be prepared to pay the salary that might be needed to compete for his services if he has become famous up there.



I loved Drage. I like Chad Lewis. I also loved the guy who caught the winning TD pass vs Miami. He had shaved off part of his hand in a car accident, and still caught passes, usually out of the backfield, and never dropped passes. What was his name? - what is he doing now?



Anyway - if we start getting new OC or new position coaches - I hope we get some experience because talented individuals with little or no coaching experience may be loaded with potential, but are a high risk for dissappointing on the field - especially with special challenges to develop a bunch of inexperienced players all at once. We already have two recently promoted grad assistants on staff. Luckily - mentored by the master - Bronco Mendenhall.



So if we want to try out some young bucks on offense who haven't been through the hoops - bring in a master OC to orchestrate it. One that knows when to listen to them and when to tell them to shut up.

does anyone in the NCAA even remember about Cahoon? Let's just bring him in as a player, forget about a coach. I mean, he's been gone for more than 10 years, I'm sure we could get away with it. ;) (I'm being serious, and TIC at the same time. I would take today's Ben Cahoon over all our receivers but Apo and Hoffman).



I would have to vote Lewis, for a few reasons stated above (possible OC potential, could coach both TE's and receivers, etc) but also for recruiting purposes. I would think that Chad Lewis has more appeal than Ben Cahoon. No offense to Cahoon, but if you tell a potential recruit he played in the NFL for 15 years, that is instant respect. You tell them about Cahoons success in the CFL, and the response might be, "That's cool. Wait... There's a football league in Canada?"



All that said, I would be more than happy with Cahoon, and know that he would do a great job with the receivers.

I have no problem hiring Chad Lewis, I'd like to bring him in, but I always like having him unofficially with the team during the times the coaches can't be with the them. I'm not sure that anyone could effectively coach tight ends and wide receivers, I think each specialty would take too much effort to give the other one ample time, especially at BYU where their roles are so heavily utilized.
